You can encourage more customers to review products by asking actual users consistently, making the review process simple, and publishing feedback transparently. These practices can improve your collection process, but the FTC sources cited here do not quantify how many additional reviews they generate. A larger review count is useful only when customers can trust how those reviews were requested and displayed.
1. Ask actual customers in a neutral, consistent way
Send a clear request to customers who bought and used—or otherwise experienced—the product. Apply the same basic approach across customers rather than choosing people you expect to be happy. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises marketers not to ask people for reviews of products or services they have not used or experienced: Soliciting and Paying for Online Reviews: A Guide for Marketers.
Selective solicitation can skew the picture customers see. In its endorsement guidance, the FTC gives choosing customers in regions with high satisfaction as an example of a problematic practice: FTC’s Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking. Avoid screening customers by satisfaction or asking only those likely to leave positive feedback to post publicly. The sources do not establish a universally best channel or send time, so choose a practical, consistent process rather than presenting a particular schedule as proven.

If you offer a discount, gift, or other incentive for a review, do not make it contingent—explicitly or implicitly—on a positive rating. The FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule prohibits incentives for five-star reviews, including reviews posted on third-party platforms; disclosure does not make a sentiment-conditioned incentive acceptable. An incentive not tied to sentiment may still need disclosure under the FTC Act, and the destination platform may prohibit incentives altogether. Before offering anything, check the rules of the site where the review will appear. U.S. federal guidance does not override a platform’s stricter requirements or laws in other jurisdictions.
2. Make it easy to leave an honest review
Give customers a straightforward route from your request to the relevant product’s review form. Identify the product, explain how to submit feedback, and invite an honest account of the customer’s experience—positive, negative, or mixed. This is a practical design recommendation, not a guarantee of a particular increase in review volume.

- Link directly to the correct product or review form when the destination allows it.
- Keep the request clear and concise, and explain what kinds of useful details customers might include, such as fit, setup, durability, or how they use the item.
- Use one neutral request path. Do not ask customers to rate their satisfaction first and send only satisfied customers to a public review page.
- Check the destination platform’s current review and incentive policies before sending requests.
A survey or private feedback form can help you learn from customers, but it should not become a gate that filters unhappy customers away from public review options. The aim is to reduce friction for everyone, not to steer the public record toward praise.

3. Publish and manage reviews transparently
Show genuine positive and negative reviews without presenting the collection in a misleading way. The FTC’s platform guide advises publishing all genuine reviews rather than excluding negative ones, and warns that featuring positive reviews more prominently can mislead readers: Featuring Online Customer Reviews: A Guide for Platforms.

Moderation is not automatically improper. You can use reasonable procedures to investigate suspicious reviews and remove content that is fake or violates clearly stated policies. Explain relevant rules and apply them consistently; do not use moderation as a pretext to hide legitimate criticism. If incentives or other material connections affect a review, disclose them where required, and make rating calculations and display practices clear enough that customers are not misled. The FTC’s platform guidance covers collection, moderation, display, disclosures, and suspicious-review investigations.
Review manipulation harms more than an individual shopper’s decision. When the FTC announced updated advertising guides in 2023, then-Chair Lina M. Khan said: “Fake reviews not only waste people’s time and money, but also pollute the marketplace and divert business away from honest competitors.” Read the FTC’s June 29, 2023 announcement.

How to choose a review collection tool
If you use software to request, collect, or moderate reviews, assess the workflow rather than assuming a tool will produce a particular volume. The FTC recognizes that review platforms may collect customer reviews for businesses; its guidance supports evaluating how a system handles collection and display, not claims about the performance of a particular vendor.
- Request controls: Can requests go to actual customers through a consistent process, without a satisfaction-based gate?
- Handling of criticism: Can genuine negative feedback remain visible under the tool’s workflow?
- Moderation: Are suspicious-review investigations and removal criteria reasonable and understandable?
- Disclosures: Can the process identify and clearly disclose incentives or other material connections when required?
- Ratings and display: Can you explain how ratings are calculated and avoid presenting the review set misleadingly?
- Fit: Does the workflow work with your store and the destination platform’s policies?
For U.S. businesses, also avoid contract terms that prohibit or penalize customers for posting honest reviews. These are U.S. federal considerations; businesses serving other markets should check applicable local rules.
