If your laptop has no sound, first check where audio is being sent and whether it is muted. A laptop can play sound to a monitor, headset, or Bluetooth device instead of its built-in speakers. If the output device is missing from settings, investigate device detection and drivers; if it is visible but silent, check routing, volume, and connections first.
Start by identifying what is silent
Note whether the problem affects the built-in speakers, wired headphones, Bluetooth audio, or only one app. Also note whether the output device appears in sound settings and whether the silence began after an update or driver change. These details point to different causes: a wrong output or muted app is not the same problem as an output device Windows cannot detect.
- Built-in speakers are silent: confirm they are selected as the output and that no external device is receiving audio.
- Headphones are silent: check the selected output and the physical connection, then verify that the device is enabled.
- Only one app is silent: check that app’s Volume Mixer level as well as the system volume.
- The output device is missing: focus on detection and driver checks rather than repeatedly changing volume.
- Bluetooth says connected but plays nothing: check audio routing; connection status alone does not confirm that it is the active output.
Fix no sound in Windows
Microsoft’s Windows audio guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its automated Get Help audio troubleshooter instructions are for Windows 11, and menu names can vary between versions. Microsoft lists troubleshooting steps in sequence: “The tips are listed in order, so start with the first one, see if that helps, and then continue to the next one if it doesn’t.” (Microsoft Support, Fix sound or audio problems in Windows.)

- Select the intended output. Open the sound controls from the taskbar and choose the laptop speakers, wired headphones, or other device you want to hear through. If a monitor, headset, or Bluetooth device is selected unintentionally, audio may be playing there instead.
- Check system and app volume. Raise the main volume and open Volume Mixer. Check the control for the app producing sound, and make sure neither the system nor the app is muted.
- Check the connection and device status. For wired audio, reseat the plug. In Sound settings and the playback device properties, confirm that the intended output is enabled.
- Run the Windows audio troubleshooter. On Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the automated audio troubleshooter in Get Help. If it does not fix the issue, continue with the general checks above and the device-specific steps below.
- If the output is missing, check detection and drivers. Open Device Manager and check whether the audio device or its driver is disabled, missing, outdated, or not loading correctly. Microsoft notes that driver problems can prevent Windows from detecting an output, including after an update or driver change. Get any needed driver from the laptop maker or the audio-device maker; do not guess at a model-specific download. See Microsoft’s guidance for a missing or undetected audio output device.
- If Bluetooth is connected but silent, check routing first. Select the Bluetooth device as the audio output. If it remains silent, Microsoft’s further steps include troubleshooting Bluetooth, removing and pairing the device again, toggling Bluetooth, restarting, and checking driver compatibility. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting page. The general checks can still help identify the cause, but that date matters if you are deciding whether to keep relying on a Windows 10 system.

Fix no sound on a Mac
Sound setting labels can differ by macOS version. Use the settings available on your Mac and check the built-in output before assuming the speakers have failed.
- Open Sound settings and select the built-in Mac speakers as the output.
- Raise the output volume and make sure Mute is off.
- Disconnect external audio devices that might be receiving the sound, then test again.
- If the internal speakers remain unavailable, follow Apple’s support guidance for your Mac or contact Apple or an appropriate repair service.

When to move from settings checks to repair
If the intended output is selected, volume and mute settings are correct, connections are secure, and the device still does not work, the next step depends on what the system shows. A missing output calls for device-detection and driver troubleshooting. If internal speakers remain unavailable after the applicable software and settings checks, consult the laptop maker or a qualified repair service. The available guidance does not establish a universal replacement part or repair for every laptop; the model and diagnosis matter.
