GIMP is free to download from the official GIMP website and free to use, including for commercial work. If you have found a $19.99 offer, treat it as a third-party offer—not an official GIMP price. Go to gimp.org/downloads and choose the package for your operating system.
Is GIMP free?
Yes. The GIMP Project distributes the image editor as free software under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or later. Its official FAQ says GIMP does not restrict the kind of work you produce with it, so you can use it for commercial projects as well as personal ones.
The official download is free. That does not mean every seller offering a GIMP copy is necessarily breaking the law: GPL terms can allow redistribution for a fee, subject to the license and applicable source-code requirements. But paying a third party is not necessary to get GIMP.

As of October 7, 2026, the official downloads page listed GIMP 3.2.6, released September 10, 2026, as the current stable version. The release announcement lists Linux AppImage, Flatpak, and Snap builds; a Windows universal installer and Microsoft Store option; and macOS DMG packages for Intel and Apple silicon. The live downloads page is the source to check for current versions and choices.
Is a paid GIMP download legitimate?
A price alone does not establish whether an offer is legal or safe. The GPL can permit third parties to sell copies if they meet the applicable license conditions. At the same time, the GIMP Project says it cannot vouch for third-party packages, which may contain extra software or modified code. Its FAQ also warns about fake apps, misleading paid packages, and fake ads.

Yes. The GIMP Project FAQ says GIMP does not restrict the kind of work you produce with it. Commercial use of the software is allowed; that is separate from the license obligations that apply if you redistribute GIMP itself.

What is GIMP’s license, and what if I redistribute it?
GIMP is distributed under the GNU GPL version 3 or later. If you only download and use the official application, you do not need to buy a license. If you distribute copies, the GPL’s conditions apply; consult the license and provide the required license and source-code information for your distribution. The fact that a copy is sold does not by itself show that the seller has violated the GPL.
Where can I buy a copy of GIMP?
You do not need to buy GIMP: the project provides official downloads free of charge. The FAQ notes that many books about GIMP have been published, but no particular current book or listing is established here. Treat a book as optional learning material, not as the software license or a prerequisite for using the editor.
