Yes. The Sony STR-DN1080 passes through Dolby Vision when its firmware is version M41.R.0518 or later. Sony’s update notice says that version “Enables Dolby Vision pass-through”; the update was released on February 17, 2022. If the receiver already has M41.R.0518 or a later version, Sony says no update is needed.
Check the receiver’s firmware
- On the receiver, open Home → Setup → System Settings → System Information.
- Check the firmware version. If it is below M41.R.0518, follow Sony’s STR-DN1080 firmware update instructions. Sony provides network and USB update methods: Sony STR-DN1080 firmware update.
When two connected TVs cause Dolby Vision to fall back
Sony documents a specific limitation: if two Dolby Vision-compatible TVs are connected and the receiver’s HDMI output is set to A+B, the STR-DN1080 outputs the picture as HDR10 or SDR instead of Dolby Vision. Connect only one Dolby Vision-compatible TV, or select HDMI A or HDMI B rather than A+B. See Sony’s STR-DN1080 Help Guide.
What the receiver’s HDMI specifications mean
Sony lists six HDMI inputs and two HDMI outputs with HDCP 2.2 support. Its specifications list 4K 60p 4:4:4 support, except on VIDEO1, along with HDR and HDMI pass-through: Sony STR-DN1080 specifications. These documented capabilities do not establish support for newer HDMI 2.1 features such as 4K/120 pass-through.

If Dolby Vision or 4K HDR still does not appear
- Confirm the source is connected to the input you selected on the receiver, and that the TV and source are set to output and accept compatible formats.
- Check the receiver’s HDMI Signal Format setting. Sony notes that some HDR sources may require Enhanced format; the source and TV must also support the selected format.
- For 4K/60p 4:4:4, 4:2:2, and certain 4K/60p 4:2:0 10-bit signals, Sony’s guide specifies a Premium High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet supporting 18 Gbps. This applies to those high-bandwidth modes; it does not mean every Dolby Vision setup needs a new cable.
- Check that the connection uses HDCP 2.2-compatible equipment and ports for the signal being sent.
