Better drone footage starts with a camera that fits your delivery needs, then depends on exposure, deliberate flying, composition, and permission to fly at the location. The available evidence supports practical filming guidance, but not a defensible ranking of current drone models. Use the criteria below to compare cameras, then check the aircraft’s current specifications and your local rules before buying or taking off.
What makes a drone good for video footage?
Resolution alone does not determine video quality. DJI’s videography guide points to sensor size, bitrate, and color depth alongside resolution; the camera’s available frame rates and the way you plan to edit matter too. These are useful comparison criteria, not proof that any particular model is best.
- Camera capability: Compare sensor, bitrate, color depth, resolution, and available frame rates in the manufacturer’s current specifications.
- Delivery and editing: Decide whether you need slow motion, high-resolution output, vertical social framing, or footage you intend to color-grade.
- Practical fit: Compare portability and price using current product information. The sources here do not establish model-by-model portability, pricing, or a current winner.
- Compatibility and rules: Verify registration requirements for the exact aircraft and operation, as well as compatibility of ND filters and storage media with that model.
Because a current, comparable set of model specifications is not established here, naming “top picks” would imply a ranking the evidence cannot support. Treat manufacturer capability statements as vendor claims rather than independent test results.
How do you get cinematic drone footage?
DJI describes aerial filming as a combination of flying, exposure, and framing. The practical starting point is to plan one move for each clip, fly more slowly than feels natural, and avoid letting automatic exposure changes distract from the shot. A slow approach, retreat, or lateral pass is easier to control and edit than several improvised moves combined.

Plan a shot before takeoff
- Choose a clear subject and a simple path that keeps it framed.
- Decide where the move begins and ends; make a separate clip for a different move.
- Check wind, obstacles, people, and the space needed to turn or stop before committing to the path.
Keep the camera consistent
When a consistent-looking clip matters, lock exposure and white balance rather than allowing the camera to adjust visibly during the move. Use a flat profile such as D-Log M only if you expect to grade the footage. DJI cautions that an ungraded flat-profile clip can look worse than a well-exposed standard-profile recording. Its claims about particular camera capabilities are vendor statements, not independent findings.
What settings should you use for drone video?
Choose frame rate and shutter speed together. DJI’s guide uses a shutter speed of about twice the frame rate as a videography convention, not a mandatory rule. Adapt settings to the aircraft’s actual options, lighting, and delivery specification.

DJI’s guide connects 25/50 fps choices to Australia’s 50 Hz power and artificial lighting, and suggests 24/30 fps for U.S. or global delivery specifications. Treat these as regional starting points, not universal prescriptions: the right choice depends on intended output, lighting, and camera capabilities.

- White balance: Set and lock it when you need color to remain consistent through a clip.
- Color profile: Choose a flat profile only if grading is part of your workflow; otherwise a standard profile may be more usable straight from the camera.
Do you need ND filters for drone footage?
Not always. A neutral-density (ND) filter reduces the light reaching the sensor, which can help maintain a slower shutter in bright conditions. It is useful when you want to keep a shutter choice tied to your frame rate but the scene is too bright at that setting. Filter strength depends on actual light and the drone’s compatibility; the following are DJI’s examples, not fixed rules.

Check the filter maker’s compatibility information for the exact drone before buying or fitting a filter. An ND filter is a creative exposure tool, not a legal requirement.

United States: recreational or Part 107 operation
The FAA distinguishes recreational flying from operations under Part 107. Its Part 107 overview covers small UAS operations under 55 pounds and says the controls must be operated by a remote pilot certificate holder or under that holder’s direct supervision. It also highlights visual line of sight and limits on flying over people. For recreational operations, the FAA lists a separate path that includes flying for hobby purposes, following community-based safety guidance, maintaining visual line of sight, yielding to manned aircraft, and obtaining authorization for controlled airspace. Non-recreational use can require a remote pilot certificate and Part 107 compliance; determine the applicable path rather than assuming that filming is recreational.

Check the FAA’s current requirements for the operation you intend to conduct.
Registration and Remote ID in the United States
The FAA’s registration guidance describes a recreational exception for drones at or below 0.55 pounds (250 grams). Whether registration is required depends on the aircraft and operation; do not infer the answer from weight alone. The FAA says drones required to be registered or already registered must comply with Remote ID. Its permitted compliance paths include a Standard Remote ID drone, a broadcast module, or operation in an FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA), each subject to operating conditions. Consult the FAA’s current Remote ID and registration guidance for the specific aircraft and flight.
