If your Android device shows a Fastboot or bootloader screen, first select its ordinary Start or Reboot option if one is displayed. Use the controls shown on that screen; on a Pixel, the volume keys move through options and Power selects one. If the device returns to Fastboot or keeps restarting before Android loads, it may have a boot problem that an exit command alone will not fix. Button combinations and recovery steps vary by model, so identify the manufacturer and exact model before trying anything more specific.

Fastboot or a boot loop: what is happening?

Fastboot is a bootloader mode used to interact with a device’s bootloader, including in technical workflows for installing Android images. Recovery is a separate environment. Seeing Fastboot does not, by itself, tell you why Android has not loaded.

If the phone starts Android after you choose its ordinary boot option, it may only have needed to leave the bootloader menu. If it returns to Fastboot, restarts repeatedly, or cannot reach Android, treat that as a continuing startup problem. The cause could be software or hardware; the screen alone cannot establish which.

Android 8.0 (API 26) and later includes a Rescue Party process that can respond to repeated crashes of core system components and, as a last resort, reboot to Recovery and prompt for a factory reset. The Android Open Source Project documentation notes these rescue features are not required by the Android Compatibility Definition Document. Their presence and behavior therefore do not provide a universal way to exit Fastboot.

What to check before changing anything

  • Note the manufacturer, exact model, and wording on the screen. Menu names and controls are not universal.
  • Try the displayed ordinary Start or Reboot choice once, using the screen’s controls. If it returns to Fastboot, continuing to repeat that choice is unlikely to address the underlying startup issue.
  • Check for visible damage and whether the device has enough battery to start. Samsung lists physical damage, low battery, software glitches, and incompatible apps among possible reasons a Galaxy device may fail to start or keep rebooting.
  • Do not unlock the bootloader as a routine exit method. Android’s bootloader documentation says unlocking enables partitions to be reflashed and triggers a factory data reset after confirmation.
  • Before any reset, consider whether important data is backed up. A factory reset erases device data; it is not the same as restarting the phone.

Pixel: navigate the Fastboot menu

These controls apply to Google Pixel devices, not all Android phones. Google’s Pixel support instructions say to use the volume keys to move through Fastboot options and Power to select an action. If the menu offers Start, select it to try an ordinary boot. If Android still will not load, the Recovery reset route below is an option, but it erases data.

Pixel: factory reset through Recovery

Warning: The following procedure wipes data on the phone. Use it only after considering backups and Google’s current instructions for your exact device. A reset may not repair a boot loop caused by hardware trouble or every software problem.

  1. Turn off the Pixel. If you cannot reach Android Settings, Google documents a button-based reset route.
  2. Enter Fastboot. On Pixel 6 and later, hold Volume Down and Power together for up to 30 seconds until Fastboot appears. On earlier Pixel devices, hold Volume Up and Power together for up to 30 seconds. If holding the buttons too long restarts the phone, try again.
  3. Use the volume keys to highlight Recovery Mode, then press Power.
  4. When No command appears, hold Power, press Volume Up once, then release both.
  5. In Android Recovery, select Wipe data/factory reset, then select Factory data reset to confirm.
  6. When the data wipe completes, select Reboot system now.

Google’s Pixel Phone Help says, “If you can’t reset in the Settings app, you can reset your Pixel device with your phone’s buttons.” This describes a way to perform a reset, not a guarantee that the reset will resolve every startup failure. Google also directs users with a non-working display to warranty options.

Samsung Galaxy: troubleshoot a repeated restart

Samsung’s guidance addresses Galaxy devices that fail to start or reboot repeatedly; it does not establish one recovery path for every Galaxy model stuck at a Fastboot screen. Samsung cautions that menus and settings vary by model and software version. Follow the current instructions for your device rather than assuming that Pixel button combinations apply.

Try an available software update

Samsung describes connecting the Galaxy device to a Mac or Windows PC with the included cable and using Smart Switch to install an update if one is offered. This is a manufacturer troubleshooting option, not a guarantee that an update will be available or fix the problem.

Use Safe Mode to investigate third-party apps

Samsung recommends Safe Mode as a diagnostic step for possible third-party app problems. If the issue stops in Safe Mode, remove recently installed apps one at a time and check whether normal startup improves. If the problem continues even in Safe Mode, Samsung says hardware is more likely and recommends service.

Reserve factory reset for last

Samsung describes factory reset as a last resort and warns that personal information may not be recoverable. Check Samsung’s instructions for the exact model and account for data loss before proceeding. A reset should not be treated as proof that a physical fault has been repaired.

When a computer or Fastboot tools are relevant

Android SDK Platform-Tools includes adb and fastboot. The Android Developers release notes list version 37.0.1, dated July 2026; current tools are available through Android Studio’s SDK Manager or sdkmanager. This does not mean a computer command is needed to leave a bootloader menu.

Keep flashing out of basic troubleshooting unless the official instructions for the exact model call for it. The Android Open Source Project describes flashing system images as a development and testing workflow, and bootloader unlocking erases user data. Do not run a command or install an image intended for a different model.

If you are already following an official computer-based Fastboot procedure and the device or flash script behaves unexpectedly, the Android Open Source Project guide notes that a USB cable or port can be the issue. Try a known data-capable cable or another port as a connection check. That may address a computer connection problem; it does not diagnose or repair a boot loop by itself.

When to stop troubleshooting and seek service

  • Choose manufacturer service or an authorized repair option if the device has physical damage or fails to start after model-specific software troubleshooting.
  • For a Galaxy that still has the problem in Safe Mode, Samsung recommends service because hardware is more likely.
  • If a Pixel display does not work, consult Google’s warranty options.
  • If the exact model’s official instructions do not cover the screen or behavior you see, avoid experimenting with button combinations, unlocking, or firmware intended for another device.

The official support material reviewed here was current as accessed on October 7, 2026. Device menus and tool versions can change; use the manufacturer’s latest directions for your model.
