Connect the drive to your iPhone’s charging port with a compatible cable or adapter, unlock the phone, then open Files > Browse and tap the drive under Locations. For the drive to work, it must use a supported format and have one data partition; some hard drives also need external power.
Check the drive and iPhone connection
First identify the iPhone’s charging connector and the drive’s cable. Apple says iPhone 15 and later models use USB-C and can connect to external storage. For an iPhone with a Lightning port, Apple lists the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter and Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter as possible connection options.
Check the drive’s partition layout and file system as well. Apple’s requirements and supported formats are in its external storage instructions.

Connect the drive and open it in Files
- Connect the drive to the iPhone using a compatible cable, adapter, or hub.
- Unlock the iPhone. Apple requires an iPhone to be unlocked before using storage accessories. If you connected the drive while the phone was locked, disconnect it and reconnect it after unlocking.
- Open the Files app and tap Browse.
- Under Locations, tap the name of the connected drive. If Locations is not visible, tap Browse again.
Once the drive opens, use Files to browse its folders and files. Apple’s guide explains how to connect and browse external storage.
Provide power if the drive does not appear
A hard drive may draw more power than the iPhone can provide through a direct connection. Apple notes that external hard drives often need their own power source. If the drive is not self-powered, the suggested setup depends on the iPhone’s connector.

- USB-C iPhone: Try a powered USB hub between the iPhone and drive.
- Lightning iPhone: Use the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter and connect the adapter to a USB power adapter.
- Drive with its own power supply: Connect that supply as well as the data cable.
A hub or adapter needs to support data as well as power, and the arrangement must meet the drive’s power needs. Apple’s guidance does not guarantee compatibility with every drive, capacity, adapter, or power draw.

Check whether the drive has its own power supply. If it does not, try the powered hub or powered Lightning-adapter arrangement described above. A drive that starts intermittently may not be getting enough power for a stable connection.
The drive connects but is unavailable in Files
Verify that it has exactly one data partition and uses one of Apple’s supported formats: APFS, encrypted APFS, macOS Extended (HFS+), exFAT (FAT64), FAT32, or FAT. Reformatting is a possible way to change an unsupported file system, but it can erase the drive’s contents; back up important files first.
