A 2026 study reports evidence for a previously unrecognized Late Cretaceous continental magmatic arc in northwestern Iran, based on rock ages, zircon isotopes, whole-rock chemistry and the rocks’ locations. The authors call it the Azerbaijan Continental Magmatic Arc. “Missing” describes a geological record they say was obscured—not an absence of all previously known magmatism in the region, and not a currently active volcanic arc.
What is a magmatic arc, and what is “missing” here?
A magmatic arc is a belt of igneous rocks associated with a subduction zone, where one tectonic plate sinks beneath another and contributes to the formation of magma. In this study, “arc” is a geological interpretation of ancient rocks; it does not mean that northwestern Iran has an active volcanic arc today.
The authors propose that northwestern Iran preserves a Late Cretaceous continental arc connected to Neo-Tethyan subduction along the northern margin of Iran. They say its evidence became difficult to recognize because of later tectonic deformation, erosion, burial beneath basins and younger Eocene magmatism. The “missing” label therefore refers to an obscured and under-recognized record, not to a claim that no magmatism had been known there.

The 2026 paper in Geoscience Frontiers combines zircon dating and isotope analysis with whole-rock geochemistry for volcanic and plutonic rocks collected from Misho, Sufian, Moro, Amand, Vanyar and Iskandar. Its abstract reports the following observations:

The measurements and interpretations are presented in the study published in Geoscience Frontiers. Zircon ages help establish when rocks crystallized, while isotope and chemical signatures provide evidence about magma sources and evolution. Taken together with the field locations, those lines of evidence support the authors’ reconstruction more strongly than any one measurement would on its own.
What tectonic history do the authors propose?
The paper interprets the rock record as evidence for a developing continental arc. In its model, magmas changed from more juvenile tholeiitic compositions toward enriched shoshonitic ones, alongside increasing crustal assimilation. The authors also propose slab rollback—the retreat of a subducting slab—as part of the arc’s evolution.

They further suggest that the SKMT fault marks a concealed suture and connect it to arc migration and back-arc development. These are tectonic explanations for the observed ages, chemistry and spatial pattern, not direct measurements of ancient plate motion. The data support the proposed reconstruction, but the roles of the fault, rollback, migration and back-arc development remain interpretations advanced by the study.

The authors distinguish this proposed arc from the better-known Sanandaj–Sirjan and Urumieh–Dokhtar magmatic belts. They place later Eocene Urumieh–Dokhtar magmatism as an overprint on the older record, one reason, in their account, that the Late Cretaceous evidence was harder to identify.

How does this differ from another proposed missing arc in Iran?
A separate 2025 paper addresses a proposed Late Cretaceous arc in southwestern Iran, not the northwestern Iranian belt described above. Published in Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, it uses sediment-provenance analysis from the western Makran accretionary wedge to infer an arc and forearc that were later destroyed or displaced northwestward by subduction-zone tectonics. Its location, evidence and proposed mechanism differ from the northwestern study, so the two reconstructions are related questions about Iran’s geological history rather than direct contradictions. The southwestern proposal is described in the 2025 paper.

The study adds a proposed segment to reconstructions of the ancient Neo-Tethyan margin and argues that northwestern Iran’s magmatic history is more complex than previously recognized. Its broader implication is that the phrase “Iran’s missing Late Cretaceous arc” can refer to more than one proposed reconstruction: the evidence and tectonic story depend on which region and study are meant.

In a 9 October 2026 release, corresponding author Ali Mohammadi described the result this way: “This study shows that the magmatic history of northwestern Iran is more complex than previously recognized. By integrating geochronological, isotopic, and geochemical evidence, we identified a Late Cretaceous continental arc that was subsequently obscured by later tectonic processes.” The release was published by Istanbul Technical University and distributed by EurekAlert!.
