A geographic information system (GIS) links information to geographic locations so people can organize it, analyze spatial relationships, and communicate results. It is more than a digital map: GIS can combine location data with descriptive details, test how places or features relate, and present the findings as maps, tables, queries, or other visualizations.

What is a geographic information system?

GIS is a computer-based system for working with information tied to places on Earth. The U.S. Geological Survey defines it as a computer system that analyzes and displays geographically referenced information attached to a unique location. NOAA’s National Geodetic Survey describes GIS as a system that captures, stores, checks, and displays information related to positions on Earth’s surface.

In plain language, GIS connects where something is with information about what is there, then helps users examine patterns and share what they find. A location might be a point such as a stream gauge, a line such as a road, or an area such as a wetland; associated information can describe its characteristics or conditions.

What does a GIS do?

GIS functions vary, but the common purpose is to make location-linked information useful. Esri describes capabilities including data management, mapping and visualization, spatial analysis, and communication. Together, these allow users to prepare geographic data, ask questions about it, and present the results.

  • 【All-Day Battery, All-Weather Tough】 6800 mAh battery delivers up to 24 hours of active use. IP67 rated for dust and water protection, Shock resistance up to 2 meters operational from –30°C to +65°C. USB-C PD charging works from any portable battery pack in the field.
  • Manage information: Capture, organize, check, and store geographically referenced data.
  • Connect location and description: Link places or features to relevant facts about them.
  • Analyze spatial relationships: Examine how features relate to one another or to conditions such as terrain, rainfall, roads, or streams.
  • Present results: Create maps and other visualizations, or use queries and tables to communicate findings.

GIS does not have one mandatory architecture or set of components. Its tools and data may differ, but the defining idea is the integration of geographic location with information and methods for analyzing it.

How is GIS different from a map?

A map represents locations. GIS can create maps, but it also works with the information behind those locations. A static map may show streams and farms; GIS can combine their location data with rainfall and elevation information, then analyze which streams may carry fertilizer downstream.

The practical distinction is between displaying where features are and using location-linked information to investigate relationships. USGS technical material identifies spatial analysis as a conceptual distinction between GIS and mapping software. This is not a claim that every modern mapping application lacks analytical features; it describes what makes GIS more than map display alone.

What can GIS help people find out?

GIS is useful when a question depends on where something is, what surrounds it, or how geographic conditions vary across an area. For example, USGS describes comparing observations of rare plants with slope direction, elevation, and rainfall to identify places with similar conditions. The same agency describes combining farm locations with streams, elevation, and rainfall to identify waterways that may be affected by fertilizer runoff.

Bad Elf Flex® Mini Standard GNSS Receiver (GPS/GLONASS/Galileo/BEIDOU), Small, Orange
  • High accuracy 1.5-2m accuracy in SBAS regions
  • iOS certified for iPhone and iPad; compatible with Android and Windows
  • Field upgradeable to enable RTK services and achieves 1-foot or better accuracy

Other applications include emergency planning, environmental protection, and coastal or hazard analysis. USGS has described using GIS to estimate emergency response times after a natural disaster and to locate wetlands that may need pollution protection. NOAA lists uses such as mapping oil-spill trajectories and historic hurricane tracks, analyzing nautical charts, and examining sea-level and coastal socioeconomic trends.

These are examples of questions GIS can help investigate, not guarantees of a correct conclusion. Results depend on the quality and suitability of the input data, the analytical methods, and how people interpret the findings.

Where is GIS used?

Because location matters in many kinds of work, GIS is used across fields rather than belonging to one profession. Common areas include:

  • Earth sciences and biology
  • Environmental and natural-resource management
  • Land-use and development planning
  • Emergency planning and response
  • Coastal, navigation, and hazard analysis

In each case, GIS provides a way to organize geographic information and examine it in context. The specific data, analysis, and decisions differ by task.

What should you remember about GIS?

GIS is a system for connecting information to places and working with those connections. Maps are one possible output, but the broader value is the ability to manage geographic data, analyze spatial relationships, and communicate what those analyses show.
