The Wellcome Sanger Institute’s Tree of Life program is redesigning how it publishes genome notes so output can rise from about 30 reports a month to a target of 200. The workflow, developed with F1000 for Wellcome Open Research, combines automated genome-quality checks with post-publication open peer review rather than removing human scrutiny.
Why the Tree of Life program is changing publication
Sequencing capacity has outgrown the publication process used to document completed reference genomes. The Darwin Tree of Life program can generate genome data faster than conventional genome-note processing can turn those results into citable articles. Its stated response is a specialized workflow intended to increase publication throughput more than sixfold, from approximately 30 genome notes per month to 200.
Those figures are a program target and a reported current rate, not evidence that 200 reports a month has already been reached. A 2026 Phys.org account of a Taylor & Francis item describes the planned change and the workflow behind it.

What a genome note is
A genome note is a rapidly published, citable article that documents a completed reference genome and points researchers to the underlying sequence and annotation resources. In the Tree of Life program, the format also records contributions from the people and organizations that make the work possible.

Mark Blaxter, head of the Tree of Life program at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, said genome notes credit “our collector and taxonomist collaborators as well as our genome sequencing teams.” That credit matters for a project involving field collection, specimen identification, laboratory sequencing and computational assembly, not just a final data file.
Publishing the notes openly gives other scientists a stable reference they can interpret, cite and reuse while the wider catalog of life is still being built.
How the new workflow works
1. A structured submission enters Wellcome Open Research
F1000 and the Wellcome Sanger Institute designed the process for Wellcome Open Research. The highly structured nature of Tree of Life genome notes makes it possible to standardize data fields, checks and article components instead of handling every report as an entirely bespoke manuscript.

2. Automated checks benchmark the genome
Computer-aided review runs first and records five classes of evidence:
- Genome continuity: how continuous the assembled sequences are.
- Structural accuracy: whether the assembly’s organization is supported by the available evidence.
- Base accuracy: the accuracy of the nucleotide sequence itself.
- Functional completeness: how completely genes and other functional features have been identified.
- Chromosome status: whether chromosome-level structure has been established.
The resulting metrics are embedded directly in the published article. Readers therefore see quality information in the same citable record as the genome note, rather than having to infer assembly or annotation quality from a narrative description alone.
3. The article is published before open peer review is complete
After online publication and the automated assessment, the note enters Wellcome Open Research’s post-publication open peer-review process. An invited expert or a peer-review panel examines the work, and the review is visible as part of the open publishing model.

This ordering is deliberate: it makes a usable genome record available quickly while preserving an independent human assessment. James Cleaver, head of publishing at F1000, described the goal as combining “new publishing technology with human expertise,” adding that human oversight remains central to research integrity and reliability.
4. The published record remains indexable and citable
The report says this combination of automated benchmarking and independent human review has been approved by indexers such as PubMed. Approval by an indexing service does not mean every genome is perfect; it means the publication approach can produce records suitable for discovery and citation while open review continues after publication.
Where Darwin Tree of Life fits
Led by the Wellcome Sanger Institute, Darwin Tree of Life aims to sequence every findable species in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The program’s stated ambition is approximately 30,000 species, making it a regional contribution to the broader Earth BioGenome Project’s goal of sequencing all life on Earth.

Completed genomes are released through open-research genome notes so that the data can be interpreted and reused by researchers worldwide. The Tree of Life Gateway, launched in May 2021, contained more than 1,900 genome notes from universities, museums and horticultural organizations across the UK and Ireland when the 2026 report was published.
What the reported numbers mean

The jump from 30 to 200 is therefore best understood as a capacity objective. It indicates the level of throughput the redesigned process is intended to support, not a completed performance audit.

How this model changes the usual publishing trade-offs
- Speed: structured submissions and automated checks are intended to reduce the time between genome completion and a citable report.
- Quality transparency: continuity, structural accuracy, base accuracy, functional completeness and chromosome status appear in the article itself.
- Peer-review timing: publication comes first, followed by open review from an invited expert or panel.
- Indexing and citation: the model is reported as acceptable to indexers such as PubMed, so rapidly released notes can be discoverable and referenced.
- Contributor recognition: the note format credits collectors, taxonomists and sequencing teams alongside the genome resource.
The central design choice is not automation instead of review. It is automation for repeatable measurement, followed by transparent human evaluation.

What researchers should look for in a genome note
When using one of these reports, start with the embedded quality metrics rather than treating the presence of a publication as a single pass-or-fail signal. Check the continuity and chromosome-status information for the assembly’s physical organization, base accuracy for sequence reliability, and functional completeness for the state of gene annotation. Then read the open peer-review reports and any author responses to understand limitations identified after publication.
Because the notes are designed as reusable references, the article record should also make it possible to identify the specimen contributors, taxonomists and sequencing teams involved. That provenance helps users judge what biological material was sequenced and gives proper credit when the genome is reused in later studies.
What remains to be demonstrated
The available announcement establishes the intended workflow, the reported publication rate and the 200-per-month target. It does not provide an independent audit showing sustained output at that level, nor does it quantify how long each review stage takes or how often peer review requests revisions. Those operational results will determine whether the new process can scale across the full UK and Irish species list without reducing the clarity of quality reporting or the visibility of human review.
