The Gennai Pen SL01 is a compact, machined stainless-steel ballpoint that replaces the usual single clicker with two controls: a top button extends the refill, while a side lever modeled on a telegraph key retracts it. Japanese designer Hidetoshi Nakayama created the concept, and TACTICALGEEK developed the production version. The result is an EDC pen built as much around visible mechanical interaction as ordinary writing.
What the Gennai Pen SL01 is
The SL01 is a short, metal-bodied ballpoint pen designed for everyday carry. Its defining feature is not a new ink technology but the way the refill is operated. Instead of hiding the entire mechanism behind one click, the pen separates extension and retraction across two controls that are easy to see and feel.
Hidetoshi Nakayama, a Japanese artist and custom knifemaker, conceived and designed the pen. TACTICALGEEK handled product development, engineering, manufacturing and quality control for the production version. That distinction matters: the campaign presents Nakayama as the originator of the design while assigning production responsibility to TACTICALGEEK.

A New Atlas feature published on September 9, 2026, described the product in sponsored coverage and announced its Kickstarter launch. The technical and commercial details below come from that feature and the Gennai Pen SL01 campaign FAQ, updated in September 2026. They are published product claims, not results from an independent pen test.
How the two-part mechanical system works
Extending the refill
Press the button on the top of the pen to push the ballpoint refill into the writing position. The campaign FAQ describes the operation this way: “Press the top button to extend the refill.” The button performs the familiar deployment job of a conventional retractable pen, but it is only half of the SL01 interface.

Retracting with the Telegraph Key lever
To put the tip away, press the side lever shaped like a miniature telegraph key. The FAQ’s complete operating instruction is: “Press the top button to extend the refill. Press the Telegraph Key–style lever to retract it.” The side lever is therefore a dedicated retraction control rather than a decorative switch.
Using the lever as a fidget
The campaign FAQ says the lever can be pressed repeatedly when you are not writing. That gives the pen a deliberate tactile activity: the user can operate the mechanism without repeatedly exposing the tip or making marks. The source does not provide a cycle-life rating, laboratory durability test or noise measurement, so the fidget function should be understood as a design feature rather than a proven long-term performance claim.

The campaign FAQ specifies a solid SUS303 stainless-steel body. SUS303 is a free-machining stainless grade commonly selected when machining efficiency is important, but the campaign does not publish a material test, hardness value or corrosion test for this particular pen. Treat the grade and all dimensions as campaign specifications.

The dimensions explain the pen’s EDC positioning. Its listed length is under 10 cm, while the lever and clip create wider points than the cylindrical body. The stated weight is substantial for such a short pen, which may appeal to people who prefer a dense machined object but may feel heavy to anyone accustomed to a lightweight plastic ballpoint. Those are geometry-based expectations, not findings from comparative comfort testing.

Refill format and what compatibility means
The Gennai Pen SL01 uses the Parker-style G2 format. Each standard pen is specified to include a SCHMIDT P900M ballpoint refill. The New Atlas feature and campaign FAQ both identify the P900M as the supplied refill, while the feature warns that compatibility with individual third-party G2 refills can vary by model.
“G2” describes a commonly used refill size and shape, not a guarantee that every product sold under that label will fit or operate correctly. Before buying replacements, check the refill’s overall length, tip geometry, rear-end shape and the clearance around the SL01’s mechanism. A refill that is nominally G2 but differs in those details could fail to extend, retract or lock properly.

A practical replacement-refill checklist
- Start with the supplied SCHMIDT P900M as the reference for length and tip position.
- Confirm that a proposed replacement is explicitly described as Parker-style G2.
- Compare the physical dimensions and rear-end construction with the original refill, not only the label.
- Install the refill without forcing the lever or button; resistance can indicate a dimensional mismatch.
- Test extension, writing and retraction before carrying the pen in a pocket or bag.
The sources establish the format and supplied model, but they do not provide a complete compatibility list or independent writing comparison among G2 refills.
Finishes and package details
Natural stainless steel and ceramic-coated editions
The campaign FAQ describes a natural stainless-steel version and editions with a ceramic-based coating. It says the coating is intended to improve wear and corrosion resistance, while acknowledging that signs of use may still appear over time. That is the campaign’s stated purpose for the finish, not a verified abrasion or salt-spray result.

A coated version can change how scratches and handling marks look compared with bare steel, but the available material does not establish that one finish is objectively more durable. Choose based on the appearance you want and on the fact that normal use may eventually leave visible marks on either finish.
Standard package
The FAQ lists three items in the standard package: one Gennai Pen SL01, one SCHMIDT P900M refill and a collaboration card. It does not establish a case, spare refill, warranty term or maintenance kit as standard inclusions.
Personalized engraving
During the campaign, personalized laser text engraving was offered as a $10 add-on. That was a dated campaign option, not a current price or a confirmed post-campaign service. Availability, pricing and character limits would need to be verified directly if the pen is offered again.
What the design means for everyday carry
Why the short body can be useful
A sub-10-centimeter pen can fit in small organizers, jacket pockets and compact tool rolls where a full-length pen may be awkward. The SL01’s clip provides a way to secure it to fabric or a notebook, but the campaign does not publish a clip-load rating or retention test.

Why the mechanism changes the carry experience
The separate side lever gives the user a clear tactile action for putting the tip away. That can be useful when writing in short bursts because retraction does not require returning to the top button. It also creates a protruding control and a wider profile than a plain cylindrical pen. Whether that is convenient depends on how the pen is stored and how much space is available around the lever.
Weight and balance expectations
The published mass is concentrated in a small stainless body, so the pen is likely to feel denser than an inexpensive plastic ballpoint of similar length. The sources do not include a center-of-gravity measurement, grip-diameter study or user comfort survey. Anyone who writes for long sessions should treat the SL01 as a tactile machined object first and seek a return policy or hands-on opportunity where possible.
Campaign timing and availability
The New Atlas sponsored feature announced a Kickstarter launch on September 9, 2026. The campaign FAQ said the project would end on October 7, 2026 and projected shipping to begin in early January 2027 if the campaign successfully funded.
Those dates are campaign statements and a conditional forecast. The available information does not verify whether the funding goal was reached, whether manufacturing started, whether backers received updates or whether new orders are currently available. As of October 18, 2026, it is not accurate to present the pen as confirmed in stock or to promise January delivery.
Questions to verify before paying
- Check whether an official sales page identifies the offer as a completed campaign reward, a new preorder or an in-stock product.
- Confirm the current delivery estimate and whether it applies to your country.
- Read the refund, cancellation and warranty terms for the specific offer.
- Verify which finish, refill and engraving options are actually available now.
- Look for a current statement about production status rather than relying on the original forecast.

Do not infer better writing quality, durability, comfort or value from the SL01’s unusual mechanism alone. The reviewed sources contain no independent writing test, measured durability result, comparative user study or market-price analysis.
What is known—and what is not
The strongest established facts are the design roles, two-part actuation, SUS303 material specification, published dimensions, Parker-style G2 format and supplied P900M refill. The campaign also states that ceramic coatings are intended to resist wear and corrosion and that the lever can be used repeatedly as a fidget.
Several buyer-relevant questions remain unanswered by the available material: how many actuation cycles the mechanism is rated for, how the clip performs under repeated use, whether the coating survives abrasion, which third-party G2 refills fit without adjustment, how the pen writes compared with other ballpoints, and what warranty or after-sales service applies after the campaign. Those gaps are important because the SL01’s appeal is tied to a moving mechanism and a finish whose long-term behavior has not been independently documented.
Who should consider the Gennai Pen SL01
The SL01 makes the most sense for an EDC user who values a compact stainless body, visible mechanical design and a tactile control that can be operated even when not writing. It is also aimed at collectors of industrial objects and limited-run design pieces. A conventional retractable pen may be a better fit for someone whose priorities are minimum weight, a completely smooth exterior, a large established refill catalog or proven long-term durability data.
Because availability and fulfillment are unresolved, treat any current listing as a transaction that needs its own verification. Confirm the source, delivery status, included items and refill details before committing. The pen’s distinctive mechanism is well documented by the campaign; its post-campaign ownership experience is not.
