For most site owners, Astra is the better default. Its free version is genuinely usable, its Starter Templates library is much larger, Spectra is included at no extra cost, and Astra Pro adds WooCommerce conversion tools that GeneratePress does not bundle. GeneratePress is the better choice for developers who want a deliberately minimal foundation, granular hooks and filters, a block-first workflow, or one license covering up to 500 client sites. In the cited controlled test, performance was effectively a tie, so hosting, caching, images and plugins should decide your speed work rather than a one-point theme score.
Quick answer: Astra for most projects, GeneratePress for developer-controlled builds
Both themes are lightweight, maintained WordPress products that can support blogs, business sites and stores. The meaningful difference is not whether either can produce a fast site; it is how much each gives you before you start adding plugins or writing code.
| Decision area | Astra | GeneratePress |
|---|---|---|
| Free version | Usable header and footer builder, global typography and colors, basic WooCommerce support, and 300+ free starter templates | Minimal foundation; no bundled templates, site library or header builder |
| Starter sites | 400+ complete sites in Starter Templates | 60+ on the current pricing page; a comparison article describes 80+ starter sites |
| Block-building | Spectra is bundled free | GenerateBlocks Pro is a separate product, or included in GeneratePress One |
| WooCommerce | Pro modules include cart drawer, quick view, AJAX add-to-cart, off-canvas filters, infinite scroll/load-more and distraction-free checkout | GP Premium supplies styling and layout; the listed conversion layer is not included |
| Best fit | Beginners, template-led sites, client handoffs, LearnDash/LifterLMS and conversion-focused stores | Developers, custom Gutenberg builds, hook/filter-heavy work and agencies managing many sites |
If you want to import a design, adjust it visually and hand the site to a non-technical owner, start with Astra. If you want to define the markup and behavior yourself, keep the theme lean and extend it through blocks, hooks and filters, start with GeneratePress.

Astra’s free tier is a workable starting site
Astra’s free theme includes the controls a beginner normally expects to use immediately: a header and footer builder, global typography settings, global color settings and basic WooCommerce support. It also opens access to more than 300 free starter templates. You can begin with a complete layout instead of constructing every header, archive and page from blank sections.
#1 Best Overall
Those controls do not make every advanced feature free. Per-page layout overrides, theme-builder templates and the larger WooCommerce module belong to Astra Pro. The distinction is that a free Astra site can still be launched and maintained without an immediate upgrade.
GeneratePress free is intentionally a foundation
The free GeneratePress theme concentrates on a clean base rather than bundled design assets. It does not include a template library, a site library or a header builder. That is attractive when you want to establish your own structure and avoid loading features you will never use, but it creates more setup work for a first-time site owner.
GeneratePress Premium (GP Premium) adds the block-based theme builder, local-font controls, WooCommerce styling and extensive layout and customization options. It is a paid expansion of the minimal core, not a free replacement for Astra’s starter-site workflow.

When the free-tier difference matters
- Choose free Astra when you need a site online quickly, expect to edit visually, or are handing the site to a client who will not write CSS.
- Choose free GeneratePress when you already have a design system, plan to build with native blocks and custom CSS, or want the smallest possible starting surface.
- Do not select either theme solely because its free ZIP is smaller; the plugins, fonts, image sizes, host and cache configuration usually dominate the delivered page.
Starter templates and block builders
Astra: the larger template-first ecosystem
Astra’s Starter Templates library contains more than 400 complete sites across ecommerce, healthcare, law, education, SaaS, restaurants, portfolios and other categories. Templates are available for Elementor, Spectra and the native WordPress block editor. The free tier exposes more than 300 of those templates, giving a beginner a substantial set of layouts without purchasing a page builder first.
Astra Pro adds a visual header and footer builder, per-page layout overrides and theme-builder templates. That combination lets you import a site, change global styles, then create conditional headers, footers or content layouts without editing theme files.
Rank #2
GeneratePress: fewer sites, more control over the system
GeneratePress’ current pricing page lists more than 60 starter sites, while a comparison article describes more than 80. Treat the exact count as a moving catalog figure rather than a permanent specification. GenerateBlocks adds section-level patterns so you can assemble reusable layouts inside the block editor without adopting a full visual page-builder stack.
GenerateBlocks Pro provides advanced blocks, responsive controls and more than 200 patterns on the current pricing page; the comparison article describes more than 300 patterns. Because both figures come from different product descriptions, use the pricing page’s current count when evaluating a purchase. GeneratePress One combines GP Premium, GenerateBlocks Pro and GenerateCloud, so an agency can standardize its pattern library and hosting workflow under one subscription.
Which builder workflow is easier to maintain?
- Visual client editing: Astra’s starter imports and visual controls reduce the number of design decisions a client must make.
- Native block discipline: GeneratePress plus GenerateBlocks keeps page structure in Gutenberg and gives a developer predictable block-level controls.
- Long-term consistency: Either can be consistent if you lock global typography, colors and spacing. Astra provides more of those controls out of the box; GeneratePress makes you define more of them.
WooCommerce: Astra has the stronger conversion toolkit
What Astra Pro adds
Astra Pro’s WooCommerce module goes beyond styling. The listed features include a cart drawer, product quick view, AJAX add-to-cart, off-canvas filters, infinite scroll or load-more, distraction-free checkout and per-category styling. These controls address friction in the shopping path: customers can inspect products, update carts and filter catalogs with fewer full-page reloads, while checkout can remove unnecessary distractions.
Astra also integrates with CartFlows, SureForms and SureMembers, alongside WooCommerce itself. Whether every feature is appropriate depends on the store’s catalog and checkout design; enabling all of them is not automatically faster or better.
What GeneratePress supplies
GP Premium focuses on WooCommerce styling and layout. It is a strong base for a custom store design, but it does not include Astra’s listed cart drawer, quick view or AJAX add-to-cart conversion features. A GeneratePress store that needs those interactions will generally require additional plugins or custom development. That can be an advantage for teams that already maintain their own commerce stack, because they choose each component; it is extra procurement and compatibility work for a beginner.
Rank #3
WooCommerce decision
- Pick Astra when conversion features are part of the brief and you want them controlled from the theme’s Pro modules.
- Pick GeneratePress when your agency has established commerce plugins, wants to own the interaction code, or values a minimal theme over bundled merchandising features.
- Whichever theme you choose, test cart, checkout, account and filter interactions with your payment gateway and caching configuration before launch.
Performance: the evidence shows a practical tie
Astra reports a controlled WP Rocket mobile PageSpeed Insights test scoring GeneratePress at 82/100 and Astra at 81/100. That is a one-point difference, and the source characterizes it as immaterial in real-world use. This is a third-party benchmark reported by Astra, not a new test of either theme in this article.
The same comparison says both themes can reach 100/100 with appropriate caching and image optimization. A score from one test setup cannot predict every site: hosting latency, cache rules, image dimensions and formats, font loading, third-party scripts and plugin queries change the result. A heavily customized GeneratePress site can be slower than a carefully configured Astra site, and the reverse is also true.
Where to spend speed effort
- Use hosting with sufficient server resources and low time to first byte for your audience’s region.
- Configure full-page and browser caching, then verify that logged-in, cart and checkout pages are excluded where necessary.
- Resize and compress images before upload and serve modern formats when your image pipeline supports them.
- Load only the fonts and weights your design uses; local-font options in GP Premium can help avoid unnecessary external requests.
- Audit plugins and third-party scripts. Remove features that add queries or JavaScript without a measurable benefit.
- Measure representative pages on mobile after each major change instead of treating the theme name as a performance guarantee.
Pricing and license scope checked 15 October 2026
Astra’s prices below are annual figures shown for the listed site limits. GeneratePress states that all pricing is in USD; its licenses renew automatically each year. GeneratePress One members receive priority email support.
| Product | Annual price | Included site limit or scope | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Astra Free | $0 | Unlimited sites | Free Astra theme features and access to 300+ free starter templates |
| Astra Pro | $69/year | 3 sites | Pro design controls and WooCommerce module |
| Astra Pro + AI | $99/year | 3 sites | Astra Pro with the listed AI bundle |
| Essential Toolkit + AI | $199/year | 10 sites | Essential toolkit and AI bundle |
| Business Toolkit + AI | $279/year | 1,000 sites | Business toolkit and AI bundle |
| GP Premium | $59/year | Site limit not stated in the supplied pricing details | Block-based theme builder, local fonts, WooCommerce styling and customization modules |
| GenerateBlocks Pro | $99/year | Site limit not stated in the supplied pricing details | Advanced blocks, responsive controls and 200+ patterns on the current pricing page |
| GeneratePress One | $149/year | Up to 500 sites | GP Premium, GenerateBlocks Pro and GenerateCloud |
For a single site, Astra Pro costs more than GP Premium but includes a broader set of visual and WooCommerce modules. Comparing GP Premium alone with Astra Pro plus AI is not apples-to-apples: GeneratePress users may need GenerateBlocks Pro, while Astra includes Spectra free. For agencies, the arithmetic changes: GeneratePress One’s 500-site allowance is substantially broader than Astra Pro’s three-site tier, while Astra’s Business Toolkit + AI lists 1,000 sites at a higher annual price.
Visual editing versus hooks, filters and code control
Why developers choose GeneratePress
GeneratePress is built for developers who want a small, understandable theme layer and the ability to extend it deliberately. Its hook and filter system lets you place markup or alter behavior at defined points without editing the parent theme. Gutenberg and GenerateBlocks keep layout work in WordPress’s block editor, while modular loading helps you avoid activating unrelated components.
Rank #4
- Used Book in Good Condition
This approach suits custom post-type templates, design systems shared across many client sites and teams that keep functionality in a site-specific plugin. It also makes code review and version control more straightforward than a collection of ad-hoc visual overrides.
Why beginners and handoff teams choose Astra
Astra exposes more of the common work as visual settings: header and footer composition, global colors and typography, starter-site import and page-level layout controls. A client can change a logo, navigation, button color or spacing rule without learning PHP hooks. Astra’s broader product stack is a trade-off: a developer who wants only a bare theme may see controls and integrations that are unnecessary, but a general-purpose client build benefits from having them available.
Handoff checklist
- Document which builder is authoritative: native blocks, Spectra, GenerateBlocks or another editor.
- Lock global colors, type scales and spacing before handing the dashboard to a client.
- Keep custom PHP and CSS in a child theme or site-specific plugin, not in a parent theme file.
- Record every premium module and license scope so a client knows what renewals protect.
- Test editing a representative page as the client role; a technically elegant build that the owner cannot update is a poor handoff.
Integrations and project-specific fit
Astra lists integrations with LearnDash and LifterLMS for courses, as well as Elementor, Beaver Builder, Spectra, CartFlows, SureForms, SureMembers and ZipWP. That breadth is useful when a project arrives with a preferred learning, form or funnel tool and you want documented compatibility paths.
GeneratePress centers on Gutenberg, GenerateBlocks and its own modular extensions. It is a natural fit when the team has standardized on core blocks, uses hooks and filters extensively, and does not need a large catalog of turnkey integrations. This does not prevent other plugins from working; it means the theme’s strongest workflow is the block editor plus controlled custom code.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor education sites, Astra’s dedicated LearnDash and LifterLMS integrations make it the safer default. For a developer-led publishing platform with a custom content model, GeneratePress’s lean base can reduce the amount of theme behavior you must override.
Best Value
Choose with this decision framework
Choose Astra if most of these statements are true
- You are new to WordPress or want a visual workflow with minimal code.
- You want to import a complete design instead of assembling every template.
- Your client needs to edit headers, footers, colors and typography from the dashboard.
- Your WooCommerce store needs cart, filtering, quick-view or checkout enhancements supplied by the theme.
- You are building with LearnDash or LifterLMS.
- You prefer Spectra and its free inclusion over buying a separate block extension.
Choose GeneratePress if most of these statements are true
- You are comfortable with Gutenberg, CSS, PHP hooks or WordPress filters.
- You want a minimal parent theme and keep custom functionality in your own codebase.
- Your agency manages many client sites and can use GeneratePress One’s allowance of up to 500 sites.
- You already have a WooCommerce conversion stack and do not need Astra’s bundled interactions.
- You want GenerateBlocks patterns and responsive controls as part of a deliberate block system.
- You value predictable extension points more than a large starter-template catalog.
If speed is your only criterion
Call it a tie based on the cited 82-versus-81 mobile test. Select the theme that reduces your plugin count and makes your team more likely to optimize images, caching, fonts and scripts. Those decisions have a larger practical effect than the single point separating the reported scores.
A practical selection process before launch
- Prototype one representative page. Build a home page, an archive and one conversion page using the exact builder you expect to keep.
- Map premium requirements. List header, footer, archive, WooCommerce, course and form features; mark which are native, bundled or plugin-dependent.
- Test the handoff. Ask the eventual editor to change a heading, image, navigation item and global color without developer help.
- Check the license math. Compare the number of production sites, staging sites and client sites with each plan’s stated allowance and annual renewal.
- Run mobile checks after content is real. Use final image sizes, fonts, analytics and commerce scripts; a blank demo is not a useful performance baseline.
- Freeze the system. Document the active modules, patterns, custom hooks and update process before launch.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Assuming a starter template determines final performance
Imported templates often include large images, multiple font weights and demonstration plugins. Replace demo media, remove unused sections and audit scripts before judging either theme.
Buying the wrong block package
GenerateBlocks Pro is separate from GP Premium unless you buy GeneratePress One. Astra bundles Spectra free, but Astra Pro is still required for its advanced theme and WooCommerce modules. Verify the exact bundle before checkout.
Expecting GP Premium to include Astra-style conversion widgets
GP Premium’s documented focus is styling and layout. Plan separately for cart drawers, quick view, AJAX add-to-cart or advanced filtering if your store requires them.
Ignoring renewals and site limits
GeneratePress licenses renew automatically each year. Astra’s listed tiers range from three sites to 1,000, while GeneratePress One allows up to 500. Count production and client installations, then record renewal ownership in the project documentation.
Editing parent-theme files
Keep custom PHP, CSS and JavaScript in a child theme or site-specific plugin. Parent-theme edits are fragile during updates regardless of whether you choose Astra or GeneratePress.
Final recommendation
Use Astra as the broad, low-friction answer: its free tier is more complete, its template library is larger, Spectra costs nothing extra, and Astra Pro addresses more WooCommerce conversion tasks. Use GeneratePress when the project is led by someone who wants to control the markup and behavior through Gutenberg, GenerateBlocks, hooks and filters, or when an agency’s 500-site GeneratePress One license changes the economics. Neither wins on raw speed in the cited test; the best-performing choice is the one you can configure with fewer unnecessary plugins and maintain correctly.
