If a generated CSV stays unchanged after you modify the function that creates it, the reuse mechanism may not know that the function changed. The fix is to make every output-affecting input visible to the cache, build task, or pipeline—and verify that changing one of those inputs triggers regeneration.

Why a generated CSV can go stale

A cached result is safe to reuse only while the inputs that determine it are unchanged. A function’s apparent arguments may not be the whole story: its output can also depend on a helper, imported configuration, a source file, an environment value, or an upstream data artifact. If the cache key or dependency model omits one of those factors, the system can reuse an old CSV without warning.

This is a general failure pattern, not a diagnosis of a particular language or tool. Microsoft describes how file-backed cache entries can be tied to changes using change tokens; Gradle warns that omitting an input that affects task outputs can produce an incorrect build. Microsoft’s change-token documentation and Gradle’s build-cache debugging guide cover different layers, but point to the same requirement: freshness depends on tracking relevant changes.

Make the CSV’s inputs and output explicit

Start by listing what determines the file’s contents, not just what the generator function accepts as parameters. Include code and data dependencies that can change the result, configuration, and relevant upstream artifacts. Then represent those inputs and the CSV output in the mechanism that decides whether work can be reused.

  • Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
  • For a file-backed cache: connect the cached entry to the source files or other observable changes that should invalidate it. Microsoft’s change-token example illustrates file-change detection.
  • For a build task: declare every input that affects the task’s output. Gradle’s guidance is direct: “Failing to specify an input that affects the task’s outputs can result in incorrect builds.”
  • For a data pipeline: declare the stage’s dependencies and outputs so the pipeline can identify changed work and rerun affected stages. DVC documents status reporting for changed dependencies or outputs and commands for running pipeline stages.

Do not treat these mechanisms as interchangeable. A cache entry, build task, and pipeline stage have different models and scopes. Apply the same principle within the layer that actually generates or reuses your CSV.

Choose invalidation that fits the system

Approach What it tracks or provides What to evaluate
File change tokens A file-cache entry can be tied to source-file changes so stale content is not silently reused. Which changes are observable, and whether the system invalidates or reloads automatically.
Declared build-task inputs Inputs affecting task outputs are represented for correct build-cache reuse decisions. Whether code, configuration, and other relevant inputs are included, and whether hits or misses can be diagnosed.
Pipeline dependencies and outputs Stage status can expose changed dependencies or outputs, and pipeline commands can rerun changed work. How much downstream work must run again and how clearly the status explains why.
Test-cache controls pytest documents how to show cache state and clear cached values, including an option suited to CI. How easily cached test state can be inspected and whether a clean run is practical.
Incremental invalidation GitLab Advanced SAST describes partial recomputation for changed files or rules, with full rebuilding for engine changes. How granular recomputation can be and when a complete rebuild is necessary.

These examples belong to distinct domains—application file caching, build caching, data pipelines, test state, and security scanning. They illustrate ways to expose or invalidate stale state; they are not substitute products for one another. See DVC’s pipeline-running documentation, pytest’s cache documentation, and GitLab Advanced SAST documentation for the respective behaviors.

Test that a relevant change refreshes the file

A green build or successful generator run does not by itself prove that the CSV is fresh: a system can successfully return an old result. Add a regression check that deliberately changes one input known to affect the output, runs the generator, and verifies both that regeneration occurred and that the resulting contents reflect the change.

  1. Choose a controlled change to a relevant input, such as a function implementation or an upstream data value.
  2. Run the normal generation path rather than manually editing or deleting the CSV.
  3. Check the produced CSV for an expected content change, not only for a successful exit status or updated timestamp.
  4. Inspect the cache, build-task, or pipeline status if the output did not refresh, then correct the missing dependency or invalidation rule.

This test design follows from the documented cache and pipeline diagnostics; it is a practical verification recommendation, not a prescribed universal CSV test. Gradle’s cache debugging guide and DVC’s pipeline status and execution guidance provide examples of inspecting reuse and changed dependencies.

When to clear cached state

Clearing a cache can help determine whether stale state is involved, especially during a test or diagnosis. pytest, for example, documents commands to inspect and clear its cache. But clearing is a temporary diagnostic or operational choice, not a durable fix for an incomplete dependency model: unless the relevant input is tracked, the stale result can return when the cache is populated again. For broader context on a different kind of cache, Gradle documents dependency caching; do not confuse dependency downloads with the task-output cache that determines whether generated work can be reused.
