If every report change means editing loops, cell coordinates, styles, and formatting in Java or Kotlin, separate the workbook layout from the application data. Keep the report’s structure and presentation in an Excel template, then use code to provide the values and write the finished file. Jxls is one JVM option for that workflow; Apache POI remains appropriate when you need direct control over workbook operations.
How template-based Excel report generation works
In a cell-by-cell approach, application code creates rows and cells, places values at specific coordinates, and applies styles. That ties presentation decisions to code: a revised heading, column layout, or number format can require code changes and another release.
With a template, the workbook holds the layout, formatting, expressions, and instructions for repeated regions. Your program supplies the data and an output destination. Jxls documents this pattern for Java applications, and its Java APIs can be called from Kotlin on the JVM; the cited examples are Java-focused, so Kotlin-specific syntax should be checked against the API version you choose.
This is a division of responsibility, not an automatic improvement for every workbook. It works best when a report’s layout is naturally maintained as an Excel file and its data can be mapped into that layout. Direct workbook manipulation is still useful when the program must control workbook structure closely.

Generate a report with Jxls
The Jxls getting-started guide shows two ways to supply values: a Map<String, Object> or POJOs (plain Java objects). A template can contain Jxls area and repeat instructions, while cell expressions such as ${e.name} refer to properties of an object in the data. Excel itself supplies number and date formatting in the template.
The example below shows the shape of the workflow, not a version-pinned, copy-and-paste program. Jxls’s GitHub repository page and getting-started page display different dependency versions, so confirm the artifact and version you intend to use before adding a dependency or relying on version-specific APIs.

- Prepare the template. Put headings, styles, expressions, and repeated-region instructions in the workbook. For example, a repeated row can use an expression such as
${e.name}to read a property from each employee object. Follow the Jxls template syntax in the getting-started guide. - Build the input data. Create the objects or map entries referenced by the expressions in the workbook. The getting-started example places a collection of employee records in a data map.
- Load the template and fill the output. Jxls accepts a template as an
InputStream,URL,File, or filename. Its builder documentation describes creating a template filler and callingfill(data, output). Check the builder options for the API and configuration supported by your chosen release. - Open and verify the generated workbook. Check the values, repeated rows, formatting, formulas, and any workbook features that matter to the report in the spreadsheet software your recipients use.
What belongs in the workbook template?
Layout and formatting
Use the workbook for items that report editors may want to adjust visually: headings, column widths, cell styles, date and currency formats, and the arrangement of report sections. The Jxls getting-started example demonstrates expressions alongside date and currency formatting in the workbook.
Expressions and repeated regions
Expressions connect workbook cells to the supplied data. A repeat instruction such as Jxls’s jx:each identifies a region to process for items in a collection; an area instruction such as jx:area identifies the part of the template to process. The resulting structure lets a template author see the report’s layout in Excel while application code provides the records. For more on reusable layouts, see the Jxls tutorial.

Choose between templates and direct Apache POI code
Jxls integrates with Apache POI, so this is not a choice between unrelated spreadsheet technologies. The practical distinction is where you put the instructions that shape the workbook: in an editable template or in code that manipulates the workbook directly.

Check formulas, multiple sheets, and compatibility
Formula evaluation and recalculation
Formula behavior depends on the library version and configuration. Jxls’s formula reference discusses Jxls 2.x behavior, including formula processing and recalculation options; those details should not be assumed to apply unchanged to Jxls 3. Check the documentation for your chosen release, then test formulas that matter in the resulting workbook. Some formulas may need the spreadsheet application to recalculate when the file opens. The Jxls builder documentation describes a sheet creator for multi-sheet cases and says its POI sheet creator clones the source sheet by default since version 3.1, with behavior that can be changed. Confirm the option and default in the documentation for the version you use before building a report around them.

Kotlin support
Jxls’s cited guides document Java APIs. Kotlin runs on the JVM and can call Java APIs, but that does not establish a separate Kotlin API or verify any particular Kotlin code sample. The TBEG project describes itself as supporting Kotlin and Java and lists template binding, repeated data, variable substitution, images, merging, and formula adjustment among its features. Those are project-stated capabilities; assess them against your workbook and requirements rather than treating them as independently verified compatibility guarantees. See the TBEG project README.

- Confirm the dependency version and check that your code matches that release’s documentation. The Jxls GitHub page and getting-started guide display conflicting version strings.
- Test an empty dataset as well as representative normal and large datasets, including the output size and memory behavior expected in your deployment.
- Verify formulas, recalculation behavior, and any multi-sheet copying or creation.
- Open the generated workbook in the spreadsheet software your recipients use and inspect formatting, expressions, and required workbook features.
- Decide who will maintain the template and whether that team is more comfortable editing Excel workbooks or changing code.
