You can generate and download 3D meshes from a terminal script or an AI agent by orchestrating a documented text-to-3D API: submit a prompt, poll the returned task, and download the finished file. The documented workflow is API-driven; the sources here do not establish a vendor-provided command-line tool or official agent integration.
How terminal-based 3D mesh generation works
A terminal script handles the same steps a person might perform in a web interface, but through API requests. Tripo’s quick start demonstrates a text-to-model request that returns a task ID, followed by status polling and a model download after success. Meshy’s text-to-3D documentation describes preview and refinement stages and lets a request specify output formats.
- Prepare the prompt and credentials. Supply the text description required by the API and authenticate using its documented method. Keep API keys out of source control; avoid putting secrets in shell commands that may be saved in history.
- Submit a generation task. Send the request to the provider’s documented endpoint. Tripo’s quick start includes a Python example of a text-to-model request and a returned task ID: Tripo Developers Quick Start.
- Poll task status. Use the task ID to check progress until the task succeeds or fails. Meshy documents a preview-generation stage before refinement; follow the provider’s current workflow and status fields.
- Download the result. When the task succeeds, retrieve the model from the download URL returned by the API. Save it with an extension matching the actual output format.
- Inspect or convert if needed. Open the result in the target application or use a mesh-processing library such as trimesh. Check geometry and compatibility with the destination pipeline instead of assuming generation alone makes a file production-ready.
These steps describe a workflow, not a guaranteed command or fixed API schema. The code examples in Tripo’s documentation are Python, and API field names and output behavior can change. Check the live provider documentation before implementing a script.
Can an AI agent generate and download a mesh?
Yes, if the agent can make authenticated API calls or invoke a script that does so. The agent can collect or refine a prompt, submit a task, poll its status, and save the returned file. This is API orchestration: the cited documentation supports the underlying request-and-download pattern, but does not establish an official agent integration.

Give an agent only the credentials and file permissions it needs. Keep keys in a secure environment or secret store rather than in prompts, committed code, or logged shell commands. Add sensible handling for failed tasks, timeouts, and download errors; a polling loop should stop when the task reaches a terminal state rather than run indefinitely.
Choose the output format for its destination
Meshy’s text-to-3D API lists GLB, OBJ, FBX, STL, USDZ, and 3MF as output options. Its documentation says 3MF must be requested explicitly. Availability and behavior are provider-specific, so confirm the current API options for the service and task you use: Meshy Text to 3D API.

| Format | Useful when | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| GLB | You want a portable, single-file glTF scene. | Blender’s version 3.0 API describes GLB export as a single binary glTF file with data packed into it. trimesh treats GLB/GLTF as a scene format with support for textures and other scene data. Check current exporter behavior in your installed Blender version. |
| OBJ | Your destination pipeline accepts OBJ. | Meshy and trimesh support it. OBJ may use associated material data; confirm how the provider or exporter handles companion files and materials. |
| STL | You need geometry for a fabrication-oriented workflow such as slicing for 3D printing. | Tripo describes STL export as pure geometry for slicing and printing. trimesh characterizes STL as a basic triangle-soup format; visual materials and textures are not its purpose. Validate the geometry in your printing workflow before fabrication. |
| 3MF | Your printing workflow accepts 3MF and you want that format. | Meshy lists 3MF, but its documentation says it must be explicitly requested. Do not assume other services support it. |
For a game asset, select the format your engine or asset pipeline accepts and that preserves the scene data you need; GLB is a reasonable single-file candidate when a portable textured scene is useful. For printing, STL is a common geometry-focused choice in the documented workflows, while 3MF is another option where supported. The right selection depends on the receiving application, not simply on which format an API can return.

A successful API task means a file was produced, not that it meets the needs of a game engine, renderer, or printer. Inspect the model in the application that will consume it and validate relevant properties such as geometry integrity, scale, orientation, and material handling. For printing, use the checks required by your slicer and fabrication process; the cited API documentation does not establish that every generated model is printable.
