Moving Gemma 4 from a laptop to a NAS matters less because the model changes and more because the host can change how you reach it. A NAS may make a local model available without opening your laptop, but whether it can run Gemma 4 depends on the exact appliance, model size, quantization, memory, context length, and runtime. The title captures a change in use; it does not establish that every NAS can host the model or that a NAS will be faster.
What changes when Gemma 4 moves off a laptop?
A laptop is a personal, on-demand place to run a model. A NAS can instead be a host that stays available while other devices connect to it—if the NAS can run the chosen inference software and its service is configured for network access. That can make local AI feel more like a shared household or home-lab service than an app opened on one computer.
The practical distinction is between storing model files on a NAS and running inference there. Storage alone does not make the NAS an AI host: the model must be loaded and processed by a compatible runtime on a machine with sufficient resources. The title does not identify which arrangement is in use, so it cannot establish the hardware, setup, response speed, or specific change in the author’s routine.

Can a NAS run Gemma 4?
Possibly, but “NAS” is not a compatibility specification. Google documents Ollama and llama.cpp for running quantized Gemma models on a laptop or other small computing device, including without a GPU. That establishes a local-runtime option in general, not support for any particular NAS appliance.

File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Before treating a NAS as the inference host, check its operating system and version, CPU architecture, available memory, accelerator support, and whether the desired runtime can run in its application or container environment. Docker’s documented Ollama GPU route has specific conditions, including Linux with native Docker Engine and a CUDA-supported GPU; its guide also notes platform variation in GPU support. It does not certify NAS products for Gemma 4.
Choose a model size against memory available to inference
Google lists five Gemma 4 sizes. Its approximate Q4_0 figures below are GPU or TPU inference-memory estimates, not total-system RAM guarantees or measurements from a NAS. They include 20% overhead for loading additional things, but exclude software and memory that grows with the context window. Actual requirements vary by inference tool and environment.

| Gemma 4 model | Approximate Q4_0 GPU or TPU memory estimate | Relevant capability |
|---|---|---|
| E2B | 2.9 GB | Small model; supports image input and native audio |
| E4B | 4.5 GB | Small model; supports image input and native audio |
| 12B | 6.7 GB | Supports image input and native audio |
| 26B A4B | 14.4 GB | Mixture-of-experts model; supports image input |
| 31B | 17.5 GB | Supports image input |
These estimates are from Google’s Gemma 4 model overview. Treat them as a model-loading reference point, not as the amount of free memory a NAS needs in total. The operating system, other NAS services, inference software, and longer prompts or generated responses also require resources. A NAS that appears to meet a model’s estimate may still have too little headroom for a useful workload.
Why 26B A4B still needs memory for 26 billion parameters
The “A4B” name reflects that 4 billion parameters are activated per token during generation. Google says all 26 billion parameters must nevertheless be loaded into memory for fast routing and inference. The active-parameter count alone is therefore not a sound basis for estimating whether this model fits a NAS.

Quantization and context length affect the trade-off
Quantization stores model weights at lower precision to reduce compute and memory demands. Google identifies GGUF as the format used by Ollama and llama.cpp for quantized models and cautions that lower precision generally reduces capability, though it can remain adequate for a particular task. Q4_0 is one operating point: its memory estimate does not promise identical output quality or speed across devices.
Context length is another resource decision. Google’s overview lists a 128K context window for small models and 256K for medium models. Those are supported context windows, not a guarantee that a NAS can run at the maximum without additional memory pressure. Memory use grows with context, so a short question-and-answer workload and long documents or conversations can place different demands on the same model.

All Gemma 4 sizes support image input; native audio is a feature of E2B, E4B, and 12B. If image or audio input matters, compare the model’s modalities as well as its memory estimate. Google’s Ollama guide lists tags for E2B, E4B, 26B A4B, and 31B; the model overview lists 12B in the family, but that does not establish that every runtime catalog currently offers every size.
Local serving does not automatically mean network access
Google’s Ollama guide demonstrates command-line use and a local web-service request at http://localhost:11434/api/generate. It describes the service as useful for experimental and low-volume applications. The example’s use of localhost addresses the machine running the service; it does not by itself make the endpoint reachable from other devices on a home network.

Access from another device depends on the service’s network binding and the NAS’s firewall and application configuration. Authentication and safe exposure also need deliberate attention; the cited example does not establish that a service is securely available to a LAN by default. A host-only setup and a shared service are different deployments, even when they use the same model.
A practical way to decide whether the NAS is the right host
- Confirm what the NAS will do. Decide whether it will only store model files or perform inference. If another computer performs inference, assess that computer’s resources and runtime instead.
- Check the exact device and software environment. Verify NAS model, OS version, CPU architecture, available memory after other services, and support for the chosen runtime. Do not infer compatibility from the fact that Gemma runs on a laptop or in a generic Docker example.
- Pick a model for the workload. Compare the model’s approximate Q4_0 estimate with resources available to inference, then account for software and context memory. Choose required image or native-audio capabilities rather than selecting by parameter count alone.
- Test the same task on both hosts. For a meaningful comparison, keep model variant, quantization, prompt, and context settings the same where possible. Record runtime versions and distinguish observed timing or memory from impressions; a change of host alone does not establish a speed or quality improvement.
- Decide whether it should be reachable by other devices. Test host-local use first. If network access is needed, configure and verify the service binding, firewall, and access controls for the specific NAS rather than assuming the local endpoint is already shared.
What the NAS move can—and cannot—tell you
The title’s premise points to an important distinction: a model that is available as a persistent local service can fit into routines differently from one launched on a laptop. Whether that happened through easier access, sharing, or another workflow depends on the author’s actual setup and use; those details are not established here.
Likewise, no general claim follows that a NAS runs Gemma 4 “fine,” outperforms a laptop, saves power, or is more private. Those conclusions require the specific hardware, configuration, workload, and observations. Google’s and Docker’s guidance explains viable local-runtime patterns and constraints, but neither guarantees a particular NAS deployment.
