In one study of LEED building-document verification, Gemma 3 4B was more accurate than Llama 3.1 8B: 67.3% versus 60.5%. That 6.8-percentage-point lead applied to a narrowly defined task and four University of Texas at Austin building projects—not to language-model performance in general. The larger model did win on one of the four buildings.

What the study compared

In a paper published on arXiv on July 17, 2026, Aritro De and Juliana Felkner evaluated locally run language models as text-only core verifiers for LEED v4.1 Building Design and Construction project documentation. Across four University of Texas at Austin buildings, the evaluation covered 153 credit-level decisions supported by 484 PDFs.

For each decision, the system assessed whether submitted documentation supported a credit, with possible outputs including pass, fail, or insufficient data. The documents included varied project materials such as narratives, schedules, energy reports, commissioning plans, material submittals, construction waste reports, and drawings. This was an evidence-finding and compliance-verification exercise, not a general test of reasoning or knowledge.

How the two text-only models performed

Model Credit-level accuracy Reported time per credit Building-level result
Gemma 3 4B 67.3% About 35 seconds Higher accuracy on three of four buildings
Llama 3.1 8B 60.5% About 45 seconds Higher accuracy on the second building

The runtimes are observations from the authors’ experimental setup, not guarantees for other hardware, model versions, or workloads. The aggregate accuracy figures also conceal variation between buildings and credit types.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Why a smaller model could come out ahead

Parameter count was not the only factor

A larger parameter count does not by itself ensure better results on a specific workflow. Here, the model had to locate relevant support across heterogeneous documents and make a constrained judgment about whether that evidence met a credit requirement. The result reflects how each model handled that particular combination of retrieval, interpretation, and verification—not a universal ranking of the two model families.

Evidence quality and project documentation mattered

The authors found that results varied with each building’s documentation profile. Prompting also interacted with that profile: rubric prompts performed better on documentation-rich projects, while chain-of-thought prompts did better on documentation-lean projects. Those findings describe this dataset and pipeline; they do not establish that one prompt style is generally superior.

Adding images did not help in the tested setup

In the study’s ablations, adding low-resolution drawing images rendered at 150–300 dpi consistently reduced accuracy. That is a result for these inputs and this pipeline, not evidence that vision models or drawing analysis are inherently unhelpful.

Why the full hybrid pipeline scored lower

The system separated language-model interpretation and evidence/value extraction from deterministic checks for encoded arithmetic and thresholds. The complete neuro-symbolic configuration achieved 61.6% overall accuracy, below the text-only Gemma 3 4B result of 67.3%. More stages did not improve every decision: the broader pipeline lost ground in some qualitative categories and was sensitive to evidence retrieval and extraction.

There was a targeted exception. On the quantitative EA-p2 prerequisite, accuracy increased from 50% with text-only Gemma 3 4B to 100% with the neuro-symbolic configuration. This illustrates where a deterministic checker can help: when the relevant values are correctly extracted and the decision can be reduced to explicit rules. It does not mean that the hybrid system was more accurate overall.

What the result can—and cannot—tell you

The authors describe the statistics as descriptive rather than population-level evidence. The evaluation involved only four university buildings, and its ground-truth set contained PASS and INSUFFICIENT_DATA decisions but no verified FAIL cases. A LEED Accredited Professional checked each ground-truth decision against project documentation and official GBCI review information, but that review does not remove the limits of the sample.

For someone choosing a model for a similar workflow, the practical lesson is to evaluate the exact combination of documents, credit rules, evidence-retrieval process, and decision categories the system will encounter. Compare errors as well as aggregate accuracy, and test on representative projects; these results alone do not establish which model will perform best on other buildings, certification systems, or later model versions.

Local execution and privacy scope

The models ran locally through Ollama, and the paper says project documents were not transmitted to an external model provider. That describes the study’s deployment arrangement; it is not a general guarantee about every local-model setup or the handling of other data involved in a deployment.
