Google is testing a more expressive look for Gemini Live on Android, but the specific interface changes have not been announced as a public release. A July 24, 2026 report based on Google app version 17.43.11 describes a softened, glowing Gemini overlay, a “Talk Live” control, and a smaller Live button. Google has not confirmed when—or whether—those details will reach users.
What might change in Gemini Live’s Android interface?
Android Authority reported on July 24, 2026, that it found additional Neural Expressive styling in Google app version 17.43.11. The report describes a test, not a released feature, and its details concern Android’s Gemini overlay and Live controls.
- The overlay: A gauzy, slightly blurred appearance with colored accents and floating dots, rather than the more ordinary overlay treatment.
- The animation: A slower launch animation.
- Access to Live: A “Talk Live” control within the overlay.
- The Live control: A more compact, glowing button in the Live screen.
These descriptions come from an APK teardown reported by Android Authority. They are not evidence that the tested design is available to install or that the final interface will look exactly the same.
When will the Gemini Live redesign roll out?
There is no confirmed release date for the specific overlay and Live-control changes reported in July, and Google has not announced that they will ship. Android Authority says the features were not live at the time of its report and cautions that findings in app code can be abandoned before public release. The report does not establish whether the changes will reach all Android users or only some users.

Google did announce a broader design direction called Neural Expressive in May 2026. The company said it was rolling out globally across the Gemini app on web, Android, and iOS. That announcement supports the wider design context, but it does not confirm the July-tested Android overlay or Live controls. In Google’s May 19 announcement, Josh Woodward, VP of Google Labs, Gemini app and AI Studio, described the broader design: “The interface now features fluid animations, vibrant colors, new typography and haptic feedback.”
How does this differ from earlier Gemini Live changes?
Gemini’s Android interface has been changing in stages, but earlier reports describe separate updates—not proof that the July visual treatment has launched.

| April 7, 2026, 9to5Google | A redesign in Google app beta version 17.3, with Live replacing its full-screen interface with an overlay over the Gemini home screen. | An earlier beta interface change was reported. |
| April 17, 2026, Android Authority | An earlier overlay redesign beginning to reach some stable-channel users; the rollout was not widespread at the time. Live stayed on the same screen when activated. | Some users were reported to be receiving an earlier update, not the July styling. |
| April 19, 2026, 9to5Google | A Live redesign in beta version 17.14, keeping the Gemini homepage visible and using a pill-shaped area for camera or screen sharing and microphone mute. | A separate beta layout was reported before the July test. |
| July 24, 2026, Android Authority | The softened overlay, “Talk Live” control, slower animation and compact glowing Live button found in version 17.43.11. | A test was reported; public availability and release timing were not confirmed. |
The April reports show that Google has experimented with keeping Live within the Gemini screen and adjusting its controls. They do not establish that the July treatment is active on a particular phone.

Google has reported earlier interface changes reaching some users through staged rollouts, while the newer July design remains an unconfirmed test. If your Gemini overlay or Live controls differ from another person’s, the available reports do not identify the exact cause for an individual device. A difference alone does not confirm that your phone has received the July design.
