If you want Gemini to do more than answer questions, connect four services that cover the routines most people repeat: Google Workspace for information and planning, Spotify for music, WhatsApp for messaging on Android, and Google Home for smart-home control. Google documents these connections, but the exact apps and actions available to you depend on your account, country, language, device and Gemini client. Check Google’s current availability table before you plan a workflow around any one integration.
What a Gemini app connection actually does
A connected app gives Gemini permission to use that service in a conversation or action. It is different from Gemini answering from public web information. Google says Gemini can automatically use public information from services such as Search, Flights, Hotels, Maps and YouTube; personal content, such as your email or calendar, requires permission through a connected app.
The four choices below are an editorial starting set, not a complete catalog. Together they cover finding information, planning, entertainment, communication and home control without requiring a purchase.

1. Google Workspace is the most capable everyday connection
Workspace is the strongest first connection because one app spans several places where daily information lives. In a suitable account, Gemini can search and summarize Gmail, Docs and Drive; add, edit or retrieve Google Tasks and reminders; create and retrieve Google Keep notes and lists; and create or manage Calendar events.

Practical workflows
- Ask Gemini to summarize recent email about a project, then ask it to identify the document mentioned in that thread.
- Tell it to turn a plan in a document into a task list, or retrieve tasks due today.
- Ask it to save ingredients from a recipe as a Keep list.
- Ask it to find travel details in email and add the trip to Calendar. Review the proposed event before relying on it.
For every new Workspace conversation, explicitly tell Gemini to use Workspace or name the service, such as Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Tasks or Keep. Once that instruction is established in the same chat, follow-up questions do not need to repeat it.
Workspace requirements
Sign in to Gemini with the same Google account you use for Workspace and turn on Keep Activity. A work or school administrator may also need to enable connected apps for your Workspace edition. The account, region, language and Gemini client still determine whether a particular action appears.
Google warns that Gemini Apps can hallucinate or provide outdated information, “such as from an older email when there’s a more recent one.” Open the sources Gemini lists and verify consequential dates, amounts, instructions and messages in Gmail, Calendar or the original file.

Spotify is useful when the friction is choosing and starting music rather than managing your library. Google’s Connected Apps overview gives Spotify as an example of a streaming service Gemini can use to play music. You can ask for an artist, album, song or a mood and let Gemini start playback when the connection and account support it.

Good prompts
Play the album [album name] on Spotify.Find an upbeat playlist for a 30-minute workout on Spotify.Start my saved music on Spotify.
Those prompts describe playback intent. Do not assume that Gemini can edit playlists, like tracks, change account settings or perform every action available in the Spotify app; the documented example establishes music playback, not a complete set of library controls.
3. WhatsApp brings messaging to Gemini on Android
On supported Android devices, Google lists WhatsApp as a connected app for sending messages and making calls. That makes it useful when your hands are occupied or when a short message is part of a larger task, such as telling someone that you will arrive late.
Use it with a confirmation habit
- Name the recipient and app clearly, for example:
Send a WhatsApp message to Alex saying I will arrive at 6. - Check the recipient, wording and destination Gemini shows before sending.
- For calls, confirm the contact and that WhatsApp—not the regular phone dialer—is selected.
The Android qualification matters. Connected Apps are not a single feature set shared identically by Android, iOS, the web and smart watches. If WhatsApp does not appear on your device, check the availability table and the Connected Apps screen rather than assuming the account is misconfigured.

4. Google Home connects Gemini to smart-home routines
If your compatible devices are already set up in Google Home, Gemini can manage smart-home devices through that connection. This is a natural fit for voice or chat requests such as turning lights off, adjusting a supported device or checking a home’s state.

Set a safe scope
- Use specific room and device names when more than one device could match.
- For locks, alarms, appliances or other consequential devices, inspect the result and use the Google Home app when a command needs extra confirmation.
- Do not infer compatibility from the brand or shape of a device. The connection depends on whether that device is supported in your Google Home setup and eligible for your Gemini client.
How to connect an app
Google’s interface can use slightly different labels as features roll out. The documented paths are:
- Sign in to Gemini with the account you want to use.
- Open Settings and help and choose Connected Apps. In some versions the route is Personal Intelligence followed by Connected Apps.
- Select an available app, read the permissions request and follow the sign-in or authorization prompts.
- Start a chat and type
@to choose an app, or name the app directly in your request. Gemini may ask for permission at the first use. - Run a low-risk test, such as finding a document, playing a song or retrieving a note, before using an action that sends a message or changes a device.
The Connected Apps screen is the practical source of truth for your account: it shows which services are available to that Gemini client. An app mentioned in Google’s general overview may still be absent because of geography, language, age or account policy.
Eligibility and platform caveats to check first
Google’s availability and requirements table lists the account, age, region, language, client and mode requirements for individual apps. Workspace is listed for personal, work and school Google Accounts in supported regions and languages, with web and mobile support and Gemini in Chrome. Third-party apps can have narrower requirements.
Keep Activity changes what is available
Google’s Connected Apps guidance says that when Keep Activity is off, connected apps are unavailable on the web, iOS and smart watches. On Android, only Device assistance, Phone, Messages and WhatsApp remain available in that state. This is why an app can appear to work on one device but not another.
Work and school accounts
Administrators can restrict connected apps by Workspace edition or policy. If the option is missing, ask the administrator which connected-app settings are allowed; reinstalling the consumer app will not bypass an account-level restriction.

Connected apps can expose much more context than a single prompt. Google’s documentation on personalization with Connected Apps says connected data may include saved Search and YouTube data, email, files, events, photos, videos, contact details, payment information and location information. Some of that data can reveal sensitive topics.
Before authorizing an app, consider whether Gemini needs that category of information for the workflow you want. You can connect or disconnect apps from Connected Apps settings. Disconnecting prevents future use through that connection, but it does not turn a previously sent message, created event or changed smart-home state back automatically.
For a shared, managed or family account, review who controls the account and which devices can invoke Gemini. Avoid putting passwords, payment credentials or highly sensitive personal details into prompts merely to make an automation convenient.

Accuracy and recovery when something goes wrong
Gemini uses the wrong source or an old message
Ask it to search the named service again and specify a date, sender, folder or document title. Open the listed source and check the original record. For a deadline, payment, travel change or medical detail, treat the source app—not the generated summary—as authoritative.
The app or action is missing
- Open Connected Apps and confirm that the app is listed for the current account.
- Check the availability table for your country, language, age and device.
- For Workspace, verify Keep Activity and ask a work or school administrator whether the feature is enabled.
- Try the supported client indicated in the table, since web, Android, iOS and smart-watch capabilities differ.
- Reconnect the app only after checking permissions; repeated authorization will not fix an account or regional restriction.
An action affects the wrong person or device
Stop and undo it in the original app when an undo is available. Use exact names, rooms, recipients and dates in the next request, and require a preview or confirmation for messages, calls, calendar changes and smart-home commands.
Which connection should you add first?
- Choose Workspace if your main problem is scattered email, files, notes, tasks or appointments.
- Choose Spotify if you want quick, hands-free music and do not need deep library administration.
- Choose WhatsApp if you use a supported Android device and want messaging or calls without opening the app.
- Choose Google Home if your compatible devices already appear in Google Home and you value conversational control.
Connecting all four is reasonable when each solves a real routine, but permissions should follow need rather than novelty. Start with one low-risk workflow, verify the result in the source app, then expand to actions that send, schedule or control something.
