To install Gemini CLI on Windows 11, use Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and Node.js 20.0.0 or later, then install the CLI with npm and run gemini. The current official installation guide lists 24H2+ as its Windows recommendation; users on earlier Windows 11 releases should not assume they meet that recommendation. For most people using a local PC, the simplest first sign-in is with a personal Google account.
Check the Windows and Node.js requirements
Gemini CLI is a terminal-based assistant for asking questions and working with code or documents. The project currently recommends Windows 11 24H2 or later, Node.js 20.0.0 or later, a supported shell such as PowerShell, and an internet connection. Its installation page suggests at least 4GB of RAM for casual use and 16GB or more for power use; these are project guidelines, not measured performance guarantees. See the official installation and release instructions for current details.
- Check your Windows version in Settings > System > About. Confirm that it is Windows 11 version 24H2 or later.
- Open PowerShell and run
node --versionandnpm --version. - If Node.js is missing or its version is below 20.0.0, install a current supported Node.js release from its official source. Open a new PowerShell window afterward so the updated PATH is available, then check the versions again.
The Gemini CLI installation guide specifies the Node.js version floor but does not name a particular Windows installer in its instructions. Choose an official Node.js distribution rather than an unofficial download.
Choose an installation method
A global npm install is convenient if you expect to run the gemini command regularly. Using npx avoids a permanent global installation and is useful for a quick run or diagnosing command-path problems.

| Method | Command | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Global install | npm install -g @google/gemini-cli |

| Run with npx | npx @google/gemini-cli |

For the global method, run the install command in PowerShell. When it finishes, start the CLI with:
gemini
Stable is the default channel and the project’s recommended choice for most users. The project also documents @preview and @nightly tags for people who deliberately want less-vetted builds. Nightly includes changes from the main development branch, so it may include changes that have not completed validation. Follow the channel guidance in the installation documentation before selecting a tagged release.
Sign in or configure an API credential
For a local personal setup, launch gemini, choose Sign in with Google, and complete the browser sign-in flow. The CLI documentation says credentials are cached locally for later sessions. The right authentication option depends on the account and environment:

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Personal Google account: usually the most straightforward option for an individual using a local machine.
- Company, school, or Workspace account: organization users may need to configure a Google Cloud project. Some Gemini Code Assist subscription users may also need one; check the account-specific instructions.
- AI Studio API key: set
GEMINI_API_KEYin the PowerShell session, then choose the API-key option when prompted:
$env:GEMINI_API_KEY="YOUR_GEMINI_API_KEY"
gemini
Replace the example value locally. Do not put a real key in a public script or source-control repository.
- Vertex AI: follow the Vertex AI authentication method and have a Google Cloud project available.
For headless use, arrange credentials before launching: the documented options are existing cached credentials or configured API-key or Vertex AI environment credentials. Authentication choice can affect quotas, pricing, terms, and privacy notices. Check the current authentication setup guide and the terms and notices that apply to your account before choosing a method.
Use Gemini CLI for a first task
After launching and authenticating, enter a concrete request in the terminal. The quickstart describes using Gemini CLI to ask questions and work with code or documents, including generating, reviewing, and editing content. For example, in a project directory you might ask:

Use /help to see available commands. Review proposed edits and generated content before accepting or using them; the official quickstart does not guarantee that every action is safe, accurate, or automatically reversible. More examples and startup guidance are in the Gemini CLI quickstart.

Update or remove the global installation
For a global npm installation, run the following in PowerShell to update to the latest published version:
npm install -g @google/gemini-cli@latest
To remove that global installation, run:
npm uninstall -g @google/gemini-cli
The update and removal commands apply to the global npm install; an npx run does not create that global installation. The official FAQ covers additional package and Windows questions.

Fix common Windows installation and sign-in problems
PowerShell says gemini is not recognized
This commonly indicates that npm’s global executable directory is not on Windows PATH. Check npm’s global prefix as described in the troubleshooting guide, ensure the corresponding executable directory is included in your user PATH, and restart PowerShell. If npx @google/gemini-cli runs but gemini does not, that is a useful clue that global command resolution is the issue rather than the CLI package itself.
Sign-in says the account is ineligible or the location is unavailable
Check the current supported locations and confirm that the Google account and any applicable license meet the eligibility requirements. Availability depends on location and account type; consult the current troubleshooting guidance.
A personal account gets an organization entitlement error
Check whether GOOGLE_CLOUD_PROJECT or GOOGLE_CLOUD_PROJECT_ID is set in the current environment or in a PowerShell startup file. The troubleshooting guide notes that either variable can trigger an organization subscription check. If you are using an organization account, ask your administrator about the required entitlement.

A company network causes a TLS certificate error
SSL inspection on a managed network can mean Node.js does not trust the organization’s root certificate. The official troubleshooting guide suggests trying this in PowerShell:
$env:NODE_USE_SYSTEM_CA="1"
If that does not resolve the issue, an administrator may provide a corporate certificate path to configure with NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS. Only use a certificate supplied and verified by your organization’s administrator; do not download or trust an unknown certificate.
A command such as chmod +x fails
chmod is a Unix command, not a standard Windows command. Use an appropriate Windows equivalent where one exists, or use a Unix-like environment such as WSL or Git Bash when the task genuinely requires Unix tools. The FAQ addresses this Windows-specific issue.
