For most people choosing between these two cards, the RTX 5080 is the better buy if its performance meets their gaming or creative-work needs. The RTX 5090 is worth its much higher price when you specifically need the strongest 4K performance, its 32 GB of memory, or the extra capability for a workload that can use it. Compare the cards at the prices you can actually pay—not their 2025 launch prices—and check the exact board’s power and fit requirements before purchasing.

How much faster is the RTX 5090?

In GamersNexus’s 2025 review, the RTX 5090 was 30% to 68.9% faster than the RTX 5080 at 4K across the review’s tested workloads. That range is substantial, but it reflects different games and settings, not a guaranteed uplift in every title or PC.

For example, in the review’s 4K rasterized Black Myth: Wukong test, the RTX 5090 produced 86 FPS and the RTX 5080 58 FPS. In its 1440p Dragon’s Dogma 2 test, the 5080 reached 134 FPS—71% of the 5090’s result. These are individual results from GamersNexus’s test setup, not predictions for another game or system. What do you get for the price?

NVIDIA launched both cards on January 30, 2025, at US prices of $1,999 for the RTX 5090 and $999 for the RTX 5080. Those are historical launch prices, not current offers. NVIDIA’s launch announcement provides that original pricing context.

  • OC mode: 2580 MHz Default mode: 2550 MHz(Boost clock)
  • Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4

  • Axial-tech fans feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure

Later US price snapshots illustrate why the value decision needs to use a real checkout price. Tom’s Hardware’s GPU tracker reported lowest prices of $4,381 for the 5090 and $1,289 for the 5080 on August 7, 2026. In a separate August 10 report, it put Newegg median listing prices at $4,699.99 and $1,499.99, respectively. These figures are dated measurements with different methods, not guaranteed live prices or a single current-market average. August 7 tracker report; August 10 Newegg price report.

Use the price difference at the sellers available to you, then ask whether the 5090’s additional performance and memory matter enough for your use. A benchmark percentage alone does not establish value: the answer changes with your resolution, games, settings, workload, and actual price. Check stock, seller, and final checkout total before deciding.

Does the RTX 5090’s extra memory matter?

The RTX 5080 has 16 GB of GDDR7 memory in NVIDIA’s reference specifications; launch-review coverage reports 32 GB for the RTX 5090. That gives the 5090 twice the capacity, which can matter for workloads that can use more memory. It is not an automatic gaming benefit: capacity alone does not tell you how much faster a game will run. NVIDIA’s RTX 5080 specifications; GamersNexus review coverage.

How do power and build requirements compare?

NVIDIA lists 360 W total graphics power and an 850 W required system power for its RTX 5080 reference configuration. The company notes that partner-card specifications vary and that required system power depends on the full PC. GamersNexus describes the RTX 5090 Founders Edition design as intended to handle 575 W or more; that description is not a universal power-supply recommendation. Before buying either model, look up the requirements for the exact manufacturer card and check your complete build. For the 5090 in particular, verify the PSU’s capacity and quality, connector requirements, CPU and other component demands, and whether the card fits your case. The cited sources do not establish a current official NVIDIA system-PSU recommendation for the RTX 5090, so do not treat one wattage figure as suitable for every configuration.

Which card should you buy?

Choose the RTX 5080 if

  • You want high-end gaming performance and the tested results meet your target at your resolution and settings.
  • You would rather spend less than pay the 5090 premium for performance you may not need.
  • Your workload does not benefit enough from the 5090’s additional memory or compute capability to justify its price.

Choose the RTX 5090 if

  • You need the highest performance available from these two cards, particularly for demanding 4K workloads.
  • Your creative or compute workload can use its 32 GB of memory or additional performance.
  • The actual price premium and the power and compatibility requirements fit your budget and system.

There is no single value verdict that holds at every price. The 5080 is the sensible choice when it meets your needs; the 5090 is a specialist step up when you can use its extra capability enough to justify the cost.

What about reports of RTX 5090 production stopping?

A Tom’s Hardware article published October 10, 2026 described a purported production halt based on an unverified factory notice and leaker posts, and said NVIDIA had made no official announcement. It also noted that existing channel inventory could remain available. That reporting does not establish that NVIDIA has discontinued the card. Read the report and its stated caveats.
