The Gears of War story chronology is: Gears of War: E-Day, Gears of War: Judgment, Gears Tactics, Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, Gears of War 4, and Gears 5. That sequence follows the fictional history of Sera, not the order in which the games were released.
The first two positions are strongly supported by official descriptions. The year labels often shown beside the later games come from an independent timeline and are useful orientation, but they should not be treated as a fully verified official chronology.
Gears of War chronological order at a glance
| Story order | Game | Approximate placement | Confidence and basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gears of War: E-Day | Emergence Day and the immediately following days | High confidence: the official franchise description calls it an origin story of Emergence Day; Xbox Wire describes consecutive days in Kalona. |
| 2 | Gears of War: Judgment | Immediately after Emergence Day | High confidence: the official Judgment page explicitly uses this timing. |
| 3 | Gears Tactics | About one year after E-Day | Approximate: the one-year placement comes from an independent timeline, not an official year-by-year chart. |
| 4 | Gears of War | 14 A.E. in a secondary timeline | Approximate: the official game premise is established, but this exact year is secondary-source dating. |
| 5 | Gears of War 2 | 14 A.E. in the same secondary timeline | Approximate: official material places it during the continuing war as winter approaches; the year label is secondary. |
| 6 | Gears of War 3 | 17 A.E. in a secondary timeline | Approximate: official summaries establish the setting and stakes, while the numerical year is not confirmed by a primary chronology. |
| 7 | Gears of War 4 | 42 A.E. in a secondary timeline, roughly 25 years after Gears 3 | Broad interval supported by the official later-generation premise; the exact year label is secondary. |
| 8 | Gears 5 | After Gears 4, listed as 42 A.E. in the secondary timeline | Official material places Kait Diaz’s campaign after the previous game; the exact year is secondary. |
The B.E. and A.E. labels mean “Before Emergence” and “After Emergence.” They are fictional Sera-era labels, not Gregorian years. A separate timeline gives Emergence Day as 5992 in a Seran calendar, but that conversion has not been verified by a primary source, so it is safer not to present 5992 as definitive.

Emergence Day, usually shortened to E-Day, is the event around which the entire series is organized. It marks the Locust emergence and the beginning of the Locust War. The official Gears franchise page describes Gears of War: E-Day as the origin story of the saga, while the official description of Judgment places that game in the immediate aftermath.

E-Day is not merely a flashback label. The new game covers the outbreak itself and its first shocks. Matt Searcy, creative director at The Coalition, told Xbox Wire in 2026 that the story takes place over consecutive days in Kalona so players can become intimate with the city. That compressed timeframe explains why E-Day belongs before every other full game in the chronology even though it is a newer release.
Game-by-game story placement
1. Gears of War: E-Day
E-Day is the chronological starting point. Its premise is the first appearance of the Locust and the moment the war begins, rather than a later campaign that revisits the event from a distance. The official wording calls it an origin story, and the Xbox Wire interview adds a useful detail: the action unfolds across consecutive days in Kalona.
That short span matters when deciding where to put the game. It is not a story set between two missions of the original Gears of War; it is the opening crisis that makes the later games possible. Characters, locations and military decisions introduced here should therefore be read as the foundation for the following titles.
2. Gears of War: Judgment
Judgment follows E-Day almost immediately. The official Judgment page states that Baird and Kilo Squad operate in the immediate aftermath of Emergence Day. The game therefore belongs near the beginning of a chronological playthrough, before the main numbered campaign.
Its position also explains why playing it after the original trilogy can feel different from following the historical sequence. Release order introduced players to the broader war first, whereas the story order keeps the disaster and its first response together.
3. Gears Tactics
Gears Tactics is a standalone strategy spin-off rather than a numbered sequel. An independent timeline places it approximately one year after E-Day. Because that interval is not confirmed by an official all-game date chart, treat the placement as a well-used guide rather than an immutable canon timestamp.

- High Dynamic Range (HDR) Dolby Vision and 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 3D Room Sound
- Variable refresh rate (VRR) 4K assets and re-mastered textures Enhanced visual post-processing effects
- Improved shadows and reflections Super resolution with improved anti-aliasing. No loading screens during campaign
Its early-war setting makes it a natural follow-up to E-Day and Judgment. It expands the conflict through a different genre and unit structure, so its position is about when its campaign occurs, not about a required gameplay order.
4. Gears of War
The original Gears of War comes next in the broad story sequence. Its official premise introduces the main combat perspective on the Locust War and establishes the foundation for the two numbered sequels that follow.
A secondary chronology labels its placement 14 A.E. That number is useful when comparing fan-maintained timeline charts, but no primary source in the available material confirms it as an official date. The safest precise description is that the game takes place after the early post-E-Day campaigns and before the events of Gears of War 2.
5. Gears of War 2
Gears of War 2 continues the war after the first game. Official descriptions frame it around the approach of winter and a worsening conflict in which cities begin to sink. Those details establish continuity and escalation even without relying on a disputed calendar year.
The independent timeline places it in the same 14 A.E. year label as the original game. That should be read as a broad secondary placement: the available evidence does not establish a day-by-day interval or an official year distinction between the two campaigns.

Gears of War 3 follows the deteriorating situation shown in the first two numbered games. Its official description focuses on scattered survivors and a desperate effort to save humanity, making it the culmination of the original trilogy’s war arc.

- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Secondary timeline charts commonly assign it to 17 A.E. The number helps show that the story is later than the first two games, but it is not backed by a primary chronology in the material available here. Use the title’s narrative position—after Gears of War 2 and before the later-generation games—as the firm point.
7. Gears of War 4
Gears of War 4 moves to a later generation. The official franchise description centers on JD Fenix and a changed Sera, signaling a substantial time jump after the original trilogy rather than a direct next-day continuation.
An independent timeline labels the setting 42 A.E. and describes it as approximately 25 years after Gears of War 3. The broad generational gap is consistent with the official premise; the exact A.E. number remains a secondary-source designation. For a spoiler-light understanding, think of this game as the start of a new era after the original war’s climax.
8. Gears 5
Gears 5 follows Gears of War 4. Its official page shifts the central focus to Kait Diaz and a new danger threatening Sera. That change in protagonist and threat makes the sequel’s placement straightforward even though a precise calendar date is not officially established in the supplied material.
The same independent timeline lists it in 42 A.E., after Gears of War 4. Read that as an approximate label for the era, not proof that both campaigns occupy the same day, month or exact year.
Where Gears of War: Reloaded fits
Gears of War: Reloaded is a remaster of the original Gears of War, not a ninth story chapter. It modernizes the first game while retaining its position in the narrative sequence. If you play Reloaded, place it where the original game appears: after the early E-Day-era titles and before Gears of War 2.

- Listen up, soldier. The world is in ruin. The Locust Horde has risen. It’s Human vs Horde, and here’s your mission: Pick a side, build a powerful deck, and win the war. The fate of the world is in your hands!
- Experience the gritty gunplay of the video game in this official two-player card game. Take command of the COG forces or the Locust horde and seize control of the battlefield, one chapter at a time.
- Strategise your way through each chapter, bolstering your forces with classic characters like Marcus Fenix, General Raam, August “Cole Train” Cole, Dominic Santiago, and Damon Baird.
- Every battle counts. Whatever happens in each chapter will change what comes next, so you’d better be ready to dominate. The deck you build and decisions you make will change the way you play each campaign, making this a game you can reload time and time again.
- Whether you're a hardened vet or a grass-green rookie, get ready to take cover and lay down suppressive fire. Your enemies are trying to take the line, soldier. You’d better shove back hard.
Counting Reloaded as a separate historical event would make the timeline look longer than it is. The distinction is between a new version of an existing campaign and a game that adds a new period of the story.

Chronological order versus release order
There are two legitimate ways to play the series, and they serve different purposes.
| Play path | Order | What it preserves | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chronological | E-Day → Judgment → Tactics → Gears of War/Reloaded → Gears of War 2 → Gears of War 3 → Gears of War 4 → Gears 5 | The fictional progression from the Locust emergence through the later generation | Readers who want events in in-universe order and are comfortable starting with newer games |
| Release-oriented | Gears of War/Reloaded → Gears of War 2 → Gears of War 3 → Judgment → Gears 4 → Gears 5, with Tactics placed according to whether you want its early-war spin-off before or after the trilogy | The series’ original reveal of its characters, mechanics and mysteries | First-time players who want the dramatic progression experienced by the original audience |
Release order is not a canon requirement, and the exact position of Tactics in a release-oriented run depends on whether you want to pause the mainline arc for a strategy spin-off. Chronological order is cleaner for dates; release order can preserve the way the franchise originally disclosed its world and character information.

Assuming release order is story order
Judgment and Gears Tactics were released as additions to an already established series, but their campaigns occur near the beginning of the fictional war. Conversely, E-Day is a newer origin story and therefore comes first in-universe.
Treating fan timeline years as official dates
Labels such as 14 A.E., 17 A.E. and 42 A.E. are useful shorthand from an independent timeline. They should not be converted into real-world calendar years or presented as a definitive official date chart. The official pages establish relative placement and story premises more securely than they establish numerical years.

Counting Reloaded as a new chapter
Reloaded is the original campaign in remastered form. It occupies one story slot, not two.

Expecting a complete day-by-day chronology
The available official material does not provide exact dates for every campaign or expansion. E-Day has unusually clear short-duration wording—consecutive days in Kalona—but that precision should not be generalized to the rest of the series.
Recommended order for different readers
If you want the clearest fictional history
Start with E-Day, continue to Judgment and Tactics, then play the numbered sequence from Gears of War through Gears 5. Use Reloaded in place of the original game if that is the version available to you.
If you are new to the franchise and care about original dramatic reveals
Start with the original Gears of War or Reloaded, then play Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3. After that, add Judgment and Tactics as early-war perspectives before moving into Gears of War 4 and Gears 5. This is a release-context recommendation, not a claim that the games require that order.

Play Gears of War or Reloaded, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, Gears of War 4 and Gears 5. You will follow the principal transition from the original trilogy to JD Fenix’s generation and then Kait Diaz’s campaign, while skipping the two early-war spin-offs.
Bottom line on the Gears timeline
The dependable story-era order is E-Day → Judgment → Tactics → Gears of War → Gears of War 2 → Gears of War 3 → Gears of War 4 → Gears 5. The first two placements are directly supported by official descriptions, while the detailed A.E. year labels for later games remain secondary approximations. Play chronologically for in-universe sequence, or start with the original game for the series’ intended release-era progression.
