Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel, not a remake of the first game. Its campaign is set 14 years before the original Gears of War, showing Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde first erupts. The original game begins after that catastrophe, with Marcus and Delta Squad fighting an established war.
That makes E-Day the chronological beginning of the story, while Gears of War: Ultimate Edition remains the series’ original released starting point. Both use the recognizable cover-shooter foundation, but E-Day rebuilds movement, cover interactions and traversal rather than simply reproducing the older campaign.

Where E-Day fits in the Gears timeline
E-Day depicts the invasion’s beginning
“E-Day” refers to Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde rises from underground and begins its assault. The official E-Day synopsis places the campaign at that moment, 14 years before the first Gears of War. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago are the central characters, but they are not yet the battle-hardened soldiers newcomers meet in the original game.
This is an origin story: the disaster that later games treat as established history is the event E-Day dramatizes. You can therefore approach it without knowing every faction, weapon or relationship in the trilogy. The premise supplies the context that the first game assumes has already happened.

The original game starts 14 years later
Xbox’s timeline primer describes the first Gears of War as beginning 14 years after Emergence Day. Marcus is serving with Delta Squad while humanity is already fighting the Locust. The story opens in the aftermath, not at the first sight of the enemy.
The interval matters for character expectations. E-Day’s Marcus and Dom are earlier versions of the same people, facing the first shock of the invasion. The original game’s Marcus and Dom have lived through years of war. Seeing familiar names does not mean E-Day is replaying the first campaign; it is showing a different chapter in their lives.
What “original trilogy” means here
The original trilogy is the first three numbered games released in the series. E-Day comes before that trilogy in story chronology. The available official timeline establishes the 14-year gap before the first game; it does not provide a scene-by-scene chronology for every event in Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3. For a newcomer, the useful distinction is simply origin event versus ongoing war.
E-Day is not a remake of the first game
E-Day may revisit familiar characters and the same historical conflict, but it is a new campaign built around the opening of the Locust invasion. It does not retell the first game’s prison-break opening, Delta Squad mission structure or original campaign plot.
The Coalition describes E-Day as “a brand new game, built from scratch to feel like Gears but play like new.” That is a developer description, not an independent review, but it clearly sets the project’s intent: preserve the series identity while changing the underlying systems and presenting new events.

- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
New players should treat the games as connected entries rather than two versions of one story. E-Day can explain why the war exists; the original trilogy follows what happens after humanity has been fighting it for years.
What stays familiar in combat
Cover remains the defining idea
The series’ basic combat language is still movement, cover, weapons and enemies. You move from one piece of protection to another, choose when to expose yourself, and use firearms or close-range attacks to break enemy positions. The Coalition says cover-to-cover movement remains central in E-Day, so a player who understands the original games’ defensive rhythm will recognize the foundation.

E-Day’s environments are designed around a broader set of cover possibilities, giving the same basic decision—advance, hold or flank—more physical forms.
Cover systems are rebuilt
E-Day supports a wider variety of cover types, heights and actions. The practical implication is that cover is not one uniform waist-high object repeated across a battlefield. The shape and height of protection can change how you approach a fight, what movement is possible and when an enemy can reach you.
Official descriptions do not establish exact movement speed, difficulty, weapon damage or campaign length compared with the original games. Do not assume that “rebuilt” means faster, easier or harder. It means the systems have been redesigned while retaining cover as the central survival tool.

Movement, traversal and weapons are modernized
The official game page describes modernized movement and traversal, reimagined versions of familiar weapons, and new close-quarters weapons. These changes are intended to give E-Day its own combat vocabulary instead of copying the original arsenal one-for-one.

No independent hands-on test or published benchmark establishes how quickly characters move, how weapons perform or whether one entry is objectively easier.
Campaign and multiplayer options
E-Day offers several ways to play its campaign. The official feature list gives these specifications:
| Feature | Gears of War: E-Day | Gears of War: Ultimate Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Solo campaign | Supported | Supported |
| Local split-screen | Two players; console-only | Two-player split-screen |
| Online campaign co-op | Up to four players | Online co-op is supported |
| Additional multiplayer modes | Horde Siege for up to 12 players; Versus PvP | The Ultimate Edition page lists campaign co-op and multiplayer features, but the cited comparison material does not establish an equivalent 12-player Horde Siege specification |
Split-screen is the important platform caveat for E-Day: Xbox’s notes identify it as console-only. A PC player should plan on online play rather than assuming local split-screen is available.
Horde Siege is optional to the story
Horde Siege is described as a 12-player evolution of the series’ cooperative wave-survival mode. It is a multiplayer activity, not a prerequisite for understanding the origin story. Versus PvP is likewise separate from the campaign’s chronological narrative.

Which game should you play first?
Choose E-Day first for chronological context
E-Day is the earliest story point described by the official material. Choose it first if you want to see Emergence Day itself, meet Marcus and Dom before the long war changes them, and understand the catastrophe that the original game references as history.
This route gives you an origin-first perspective, but it also means the original trilogy will feel like a later period with older, more experienced versions of the same characters.
Choose Ultimate Edition first for the original release experience
Choose Gears of War: Ultimate Edition if you want the series’ original narrative entry point as it was presented to players, with the first game’s campaign and its remastered presentation. Xbox’s primer identifies Ultimate Edition as the remastered original.
This order introduces the setting through the aftermath of Emergence Day, then lets E-Day act as a historical prequel. It preserves the way the franchise originally revealed its world: consequences first, explanation later.
Best Value
- 25 Years after Gears of War 3, spurred by a series of strange disappearances, JD Fenix must embrace his father’s legacy and battle a terrifying new enemy
- Never Fight Alone: Enjoy two-player co-op with friends locally via split-screen, over Xbox Live or LAN. Player 2 can select either Kait or Del
- Redefined Cover Gameplay: New close-cover combat moves and combat-knife executions turn each piece of cover into an offensive opportunity
- Brutal New Weapons: An incredible arsenal of new weapons includes the Buzzkill and Dropshot, which can shoot around and over cover, raining destruction from all angles
A practical order for newcomers
- Origin-first: play E-Day, then the original trilogy. Use this when chronological clarity matters more than release order.
- Release-first: play Ultimate Edition, then Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3, and play E-Day afterward as a prequel. Use this when you want the original introduction to the series.
- Co-op-first: choose whichever campaign your group can access, then use the other game to fill in the timeline. E-Day supports solo, two-player console split-screen and up to four online campaign players.
Neither order is officially declared superior. The choice is whether you want the war’s beginning or the franchise’s original viewpoint.

Xbox Wire’s launch coverage gives E-Day’s worldwide release date as October 6, 2026. It lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Game Pass and Steam. Platform catalogs, subscription tiers and regional access can change, so verify the current store listing before purchasing or assuming that a particular edition includes campaign co-op or local play.
The cited sources do not establish a current package containing all three original games. A 2015 Xbox promotion connected Ultimate Edition with backward-compatible access to other games and Judgment, but those terms were time-limited and should not be treated as a live offer. Check the current Xbox or PC store for each game’s edition, compatibility and availability.

What new players should expect from the story
A darker origin story
The Coalition presents E-Day as a darker origin story. Its dramatic focus is the sudden emergence of the Locust and the immediate human response, rather than a veteran squad already accustomed to the conflict. Expect the narrative to establish the scale and shock of the invasion while following Marcus and Dom at an earlier point in their lives.
Familiar names do not erase the time gap
Recognizing Marcus or Dom does not require prior trilogy knowledge, and it does not collapse the timeline. Their presence connects the games, while the 14-year separation explains why their circumstances and relationships can differ.
Spoiler-light preparation
- Know that Emergence Day is the first Locust uprising shown here.
- Know that the original game begins 14 years afterward.
- Expect the same broad cover-shooter identity with redesigned movement and cover interactions.
- Do not expect E-Day to reproduce the first game’s campaign missions.
- Multiplayer modes are optional; the campaign can be played solo.
How the two starting points compare
| Question | E-Day | Original starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Where is it in the timeline? | 14 years before the first Gears of War; the Locust first emerge. | 14 years after E-Day; Marcus and Delta Squad are fighting the ongoing war. |
| What is its story role? | Origin campaign centered on Marcus and Dom during the invasion’s beginning. | The first released narrative entry, available in remastered form as Ultimate Edition. |
| How does combat work? | Cover remains central, with rebuilt cover systems, modernized movement and new close-quarters options. | The original game remastered and modernized; the cited material does not establish exact mechanical differences beyond that description. |
| How can the campaign be played? | Solo, two-player console split-screen or up to four online. | Solo, online co-op and two-player split-screen are listed for Ultimate Edition. |
| What should you verify before buying? | Current platform, edition, subscription tier and regional functionality. | Current store availability and which original games are included in any collection. |
Bottom line for a first playthrough
Play E-Day first if you want the chronological beginning: Emergence Day, the first Locust attack, and earlier versions of Marcus and Dom. Play Ultimate Edition first if you want the original released introduction to the franchise and the story’s perspective from 14 years after the catastrophe.
Whichever order you choose, E-Day should be understood as a new prequel with rebuilt cover-shooter systems—not as a remake or retelling of the first Gears of War. Its solo and cooperative options let you experience that origin story alone, locally on console, or online with a larger group.
