Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel set 14 years before the original Gears of War. It follows younger Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde erupts beneath Sera during the opening hours of Emergence Day. The campaign takes place over three days and nights in Kalona, making it an origin story for the war and for the versions of Marcus and Dom that players know from the later games. It was released as a new mainline entry, not a spin-off, on October 6, 2026.
Where E-Day sits in the Gears of War timeline
In story order, Gears of War: E-Day comes first among the mainline games covered by this timeline. Its events occur 14 years before the original Gears of War, at the moment humanity first faces the Locust invasion. That placement makes E-Day a prequel rather than a continuation of the later-war campaigns.
The time gap matters because Marcus and Dom are not yet the seasoned soldiers seen in the original game. They are younger soldiers meeting an unforeseen enemy while Sera’s military and civilian systems are forced to understand an attack that comes from below. Their decisions during this first assault become the foundation for the conflict that the rest of the series explores.
Emergence Day is the starting point of the war
Emergence Day is the first Locust invasion of Sera. The Locust Horde emerges from beneath the planet, turning a familiar world into a battlefield. Xbox describes the event as an unforeseen horror that Marcus, Dom and humanity must learn to face. E-Day focuses on those opening hours instead of jumping ahead to an established front line or a later stage of the war.

The campaign is concentrated in Kalona
Xbox Wire says the campaign covers three days and nights in the city of Kalona. Marcus, Dom and new squad mates fight through the first assault while the scale and nature of the invasion become clear. This limited time span gives the game a different narrative shape from a story that follows years of military operations: the pressure comes from surviving the initial shock and responding before anyone has a complete picture of the threat.
Is E-Day a mainline game or a spin-off?
It is a mainline Gears of War entry. The Coalition said in its June 9, 2024 Xbox Wire announcement that E-Day is “not a spin-off” but “a completely new entry to the mainline series, set earlier in the timeline.” That wording resolves the most common classification question: the earlier setting does not make it a side story outside the series chronology.
The game’s narrative function is an origin story. It shows the event that shaped the Gears universe while still being positioned as a full numbered-era-style chapter in the mainline continuity. Matt Searcy, the studio’s creative director, described the choice this way: “Why E-Day? That’s the moment it all comes together. It’s the heart of the Gears universe. Everything that happens is shaped by this day.”
How E-Day compares with the later games
The clearest way to place E-Day is to compare the elements that define its position rather than treating it as a separate branch of the franchise.

This comparison does not mean E-Day retells the entire history of the Locust war. Its defined scope is the opening assault in Kalona. The later games remain the place to follow what happens after humanity has had time to organize around the threat.
What story does E-Day actually cover?
Younger Marcus and Dom at the first assault
The official Xbox description identifies Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as young soldiers. Their role is not to explain the conflict from a distant historical viewpoint; they are present when the invasion begins and have to react as it unfolds. New squad mates join them, so the campaign also introduces the people fighting beside them during this first crisis.
Because the protagonists are at an earlier point in their lives, players should read E-Day as character history as well as military history. The game is concerned with how Marcus and Dom become connected to the event that defines their generation, not simply with placing familiar names in an earlier year.

Xbox Wire’s description of three days and nights provides the campaign’s clearest boundary. The story begins with the opening hours of Emergence Day and follows the immediate battle in Kalona. It therefore covers the first response, the initial encounters with the Locust and the rapid transformation of the city into a combat zone.

The official launch guide calls Emergence Day a defining moment whose story had never been fully told until E-Day. That statement explains why the campaign can focus on a short period without being a minor episode: the event itself is the turning point from which the rest of the series grows.
How the timeline works in practice
There are two sensible ways to play the games, depending on whether you want the fictional chronology or the order in which the series was created.
Chronological story order
- Start with Gears of War: E-Day. You see the Locust emergence, Kalona’s first assault and the younger Marcus and Dom.
- Continue with the original Gears of War. This moves the story forward 14 years to the later versions of the characters and the established war.
- Proceed through the remaining mainline games. They follow the consequences of the conflict after the opening invasion rather than returning to E-Day’s starting point.
This order gives the event its full context first. You know what happened to Sera at the beginning before watching the series develop around that disaster.

Release-order play
- Play the original games first. This presents Marcus and Dom as the veteran figures audiences met in the established series.
- Play E-Day afterward. It works as an origin-story return to the moment that shaped the characters and the universe.
Release order preserves the way the franchise originally revealed its world: the significance of Emergence Day is understood first through later consequences, then explored directly in E-Day. Neither order changes the events; the choice only changes when you learn the origin.

Campaign, co-op and multiplayer modes
E-Day is not limited to a single-player story. The official Gears page lists several ways to play, with the campaign and standalone multiplayer modes serving different purposes.
Campaign options
- Solo play: experience the Kalona campaign alone.
- Two-player split-screen co-op: play the campaign locally with one other player on the same system.
- Up to four-player online co-op: assemble a larger squad over the internet.
The co-op options do not change the timeline placement. Whether Marcus’s first battle is played alone or with friends, the story remains the same three-day-and-night account of the opening assault.
Horde Siege and Versus
The game also lists Horde Siege as a player-versus-environment mode and refined Versus player-versus-player modes. These are repeatable combat formats rather than additional chapters in the historical sequence. Use the campaign to follow the Emergence Day narrative; use Horde Siege or Versus when you want structured matches beyond that story.

Xbox lists October 6, 2026 as E-Day’s release date. The launch materials describe availability on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, including Steam and day-one Game Pass availability. A Premium Edition provided early access beginning October 1, 2026, up to five days before the standard launch.

The five-day figure describes the maximum lead over the standard date, not a separate story chapter. Premium and standard players are playing the same E-Day campaign and timeline.
What Unreal Engine 5 changes for E-Day
The Coalition rebuilt every character, environment and animation in Unreal Engine 5 for E-Day. Studio technical director Kate Rayner said in 2024 that the game has “over 100 times more environment and character details than Gears 5.”
That number is a developer-reported comparison, not an independent benchmark. It indicates the scale of the studio’s asset and detail target; it does not by itself establish a frame-rate, resolution or image-quality result on every platform. The defensible takeaway is that E-Day represents a full Unreal Engine 5 rebuild rather than a small visual update to an existing game.

- You do not need to know the later plot to understand the premise. The campaign starts with the first Locust emergence and introduces the crisis as Marcus, Dom and humanity encounter it.
- Familiar characters are intentionally earlier versions of themselves. Their youth is part of the story’s purpose, not a continuity error.
- The setting is deliberately focused. Kalona and the three-day-and-night span define the opening battle rather than the entire planetary war.
- The game is canonically central. The Coalition’s mainline designation means the prequel setting is part of the series’ primary storyline.
- Multiplayer does not alter chronology. Co-op, Horde Siege and Versus expand how you play without creating a different historical placement.
