Choose Xbox or the Microsoft Store version if you want Xbox Play Anywhere, shared progression between an Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC, or Game Pass access. Choose Steam if you want to keep the game in your Steam library and value its PC-focused display, graphics, input, handheld, and community features. Both storefront listings support cross-platform multiplayer; buying on Steam should not be described as an Xbox Play Anywhere purchase.
The short answer
Gears of War: E-Day launched worldwide on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC. On PC, you can buy it through the Xbox/Microsoft Store ecosystem or Steam. “Xbox” therefore covers two related choices: playing on an Xbox Series console and buying the Xbox PC edition through the Microsoft Store. Steam is a separate PC storefront.
The best version depends less on image quality than on where you already play and how you want to own the game:

- Pick Xbox/Microsoft Store when you own an Xbox Series X|S, want the same purchase on Xbox and Xbox PC, rely on Game Pass, or want Xbox achievements and progression shared across those devices.
- Pick Steam when your gaming PC is your main platform, your library and friends are centered on Steam, or you want Steam’s broader PC display, control, graphics, benchmark, and handheld options.
- Pick either PC storefront for multiplayer if your friends use the other supported platform. Steam explicitly lists cross-platform multiplayer, online co-op, and optional Microsoft account linking for roaming saves, friends, and cross-platform invites.
The Xbox listing says the game is included with Game Pass, while cloud availability through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW depends on the service, region, and account. Check the current catalog and local store page before paying for a copy.

What you receive on each platform
| Choice | Where you play | Ownership and progression | Notable access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | Xbox Series X or Series S | Xbox Play Anywhere connects the console and Xbox PC/Microsoft Store ecosystem with shared progression and achievements. | Console two-player split-screen; Game Pass support; Xbox multiplayer subscription requirements apply. |
| Xbox PC/Microsoft Store | Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC | Part of the Xbox Play Anywhere pairing with Xbox Series X|S when purchased or accessed through the Xbox ecosystem. | Game Pass access; PC graphics and input options listed by the Xbox/PC product information. |
| Steam | Windows PC and supported handheld devices | Separate Steam purchase. Optional Microsoft account linking enables roaming saves, friends, and cross-platform invites; the listing does not call this Play Anywhere entitlement. | Steam achievements, Family Sharing, cross-platform multiplayer, ultrawide support, remapping, HDR, ray tracing, upscaling, frame generation, and a built-in benchmark. |
Xbox’s official description lists Windows 10/11 support alongside Xbox Series X|S. Steam’s feature list is a platform listing rather than an independent performance test, so the presence of an option does not guarantee that every graphics card, monitor, or handheld can use it.
Xbox Play Anywhere versus a Steam purchase
How Xbox Play Anywhere works
Xbox says Play Anywhere lets you play across Xbox Series X|S and PC with shared progression and achievements. If you move between your console and the Xbox PC/Microsoft Store version, that is the ecosystem’s intended cross-device ownership model. It is the clearest reason to select Xbox when you use both an Xbox console and a Windows gaming PC.
What Steam’s account linking means
Steam lists optional Microsoft account linking. According to the listing, linking can provide roaming saves, friend connections, and cross-platform invites. It also supports cross-platform multiplayer. The listing does not state that a Steam purchase grants an Xbox Play Anywhere entitlement, so do not buy on Steam expecting the same purchase to appear in your Xbox console library.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That distinction does not establish that every save transfer between Steam and Xbox is impossible; it establishes only that the storefronts describe different ownership systems. Keep your Microsoft account details consistent if you choose to link Steam, and read the sign-in prompts carefully before confirming an account.
Multiplayer, co-op, and split-screen
Modes included
E-Day includes a solo campaign, console-only two-player split-screen, online campaign co-op for up to four players, Horde Siege PvE, and Versus PvP. Steam’s listing describes online co-op for two to four players and competitive multiplayer for up to eight across supported platforms.
Cross-platform play
Steam explicitly labels the game as supporting cross-platform multiplayer. Its optional Microsoft account link is described as a way to connect with friends and send cross-platform invites. This means a Steam player can play with supported Xbox-platform players, subject to account, network, mode, and service requirements.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Split-screen is the exception: Xbox describes two-player split-screen as console-only. A PC purchase does not turn the PC version into a local split-screen console setup.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Online subscription requirements
Xbox states that online multiplayer on Xbox requires a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer. That requirement applies to online Campaign co-op, Horde Siege, Versus, and other online features on the Xbox console side. The exact qualifying tier and catalog can change, so verify the current Xbox plan shown for your region.
On PC, the store and account requirements differ from Xbox console multiplayer. Steam’s page documents the game modes and cross-platform support, but your PC still needs an internet connection, a valid game account where prompted, and any service entitlement required by the current platform terms.
Game Pass and cloud play
Xbox lists Gears of War: E-Day as included with Game Pass and identifies Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass availability. The catalog is regional and can change, so inclusion is not a permanent substitute for checking the current listing.
Xbox also announced cloud availability through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW, subject to service and regional availability. Cloud play is useful if you want to try the game without installing it or your hardware is below the recommended level, but it depends on a supported country, plan, device, network connection, and the service’s current catalog. It is not evidence that the Steam and Xbox editions share one universal license.
Steam’s PC-specific features
Steam presents the larger set of explicitly documented PC controls and display choices. These are options, not measured proof that Steam runs faster than Xbox or than the Microsoft Store edition on the same computer.

| Feature | What the listing says | What you need to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Display modes | Borderless, exclusive, and windowed modes. | Actual behavior can vary with Windows settings, drivers, and the monitor. |
| Aspect ratios | 21:9 and 32:9 ultrawide support for gameplay and menus. | An ultrawide monitor is required; unsupported scenes may still show expected engine behavior. |
| Frame rate | Uncapped frame rates on capable hardware. | “Uncapped” is not a guaranteed frame rate. CPU, GPU, resolution, settings, cooling, and display refresh rate determine results. |
| Input | Keyboard/mouse support and controller remapping. | Choose the layout that suits your desk, couch, or handheld setup and test prompts after remapping. |
| HDR | HDR10 support. | You need an HDR-capable display with HDR enabled in Windows and the monitor or television menu. |
| Lighting and reflections | Hardware ray-traced lighting, reflections, and shadows. | A compatible GPU is required, and enabling ray tracing can reduce performance. |
| Upscaling and frame generation | DLSS 4.5, FSR “Redstone,” optional frame generation and multi-frame generation on supported hardware. | Availability depends on GPU, driver, game settings, and the specific feature’s hardware support. |
| Variable Rate Shading | Variable Rate Shading support. | It is a rendering option, not a guarantee of a particular image-quality or frame-rate outcome. |
| Benchmark | A built-in benchmark. | Use it to compare settings on your own system; it is not an independent Steam-versus-Xbox test. |
| Handhelds | Handheld optimization for Steam Deck and Xbox Ally devices. | Battery life, resolution, frame-rate targets, and usable settings still depend on the device. |
If you have an ultrawide monitor, prefer keyboard and mouse, or want to tune ray tracing and upscaling yourself, Steam offers the most clearly documented controls in the supplied platform information. If you simply want a PC copy that follows your Xbox ownership, the Microsoft Store version is the more direct fit.
Xbox console presentation and hardware fit
Xbox describes 4K resolution and up to 60 frames per second across Campaign and Multiplayer, subject to compatible display conditions. That is a vendor specification, not a head-to-head measurement against a PC. Your television or monitor must support the relevant resolution and refresh rate, and the console mode selected in the game can affect the result.
Xbox Series X|S is the only choice in this comparison that gives you console two-player split-screen. Series X and Series S are different hardware targets, so storage, resolution, and visual settings may differ even though both are supported consoles.
Edition choice and current cost checks
Xbox lists Standard and Premium editions. The Premium Edition includes additional content packs and offered up to five days of early access at launch. Because the October 6 launch has already passed, that early-access period is no longer a current benefit on October 13, 2026; treat it as launch history rather than a reason to pay a premium now.
The official listings consulted show Steam regional pricing and Xbox US edition pricing, but prices, taxes, discounts, and bundles vary by country and date. Before purchase, compare the price in your own storefront and confirm exactly which edition, content packs, and subscription access are shown. Do not assume that a Steam discount, an Xbox sale, or a Game Pass catalog entry will persist.
Which version fits your situation?
You own an Xbox Series X|S and a gaming PC
Choose the Xbox/Microsoft Store edition if you want one Xbox Play Anywhere purchase with shared progression and achievements across both devices. This is the least complicated route for switching from a television to a Windows PC.

You play almost entirely on PC
Choose Steam if your existing friends, achievements, library, and community tools are there and you want the documented PC options in one storefront. Choose the Microsoft Store instead when Game Pass or future Xbox console access matters more than Steam library integration.
You plan to use Game Pass
Start by checking the current Game Pass catalog and your plan. Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass are identified by Xbox for the game, while Xbox console online multiplayer requires a plan that includes online multiplayer. A subscription can be better value than buying an edition, but catalog inclusion and regional terms can change.
You want couch co-op
Use an Xbox Series X|S. The documented two-player split-screen mode is console-only. PC online co-op supports up to four players, but that is a different experience from local split-screen.
You have an ultrawide monitor or gaming handheld
Steam is the natural first choice because its listing explicitly mentions 21:9 and 32:9 support, handheld optimization for Steam Deck and Xbox Ally devices, remappable controls, and a built-in benchmark. Confirm that your particular device can run the desired settings before buying for performance reasons.
Your friends are divided between Xbox and Steam
Either supported storefront can work for cross-platform multiplayer according to Steam’s listing. Link a Microsoft account on Steam if you want the listed roaming-save, friend, and invite functions, and make sure everyone is using a supported platform and online mode.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How to decide before you click Buy
- List your target devices. Write down whether you will play on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, a conventional gaming PC, or a handheld. Console split-screen immediately narrows the choice to Xbox Series X|S.
- Check ownership goals. If you want one purchase shared between Xbox console and Xbox PC, select the Xbox/Microsoft Store ecosystem for Play Anywhere. If you want a Steam-library purchase, select Steam.
- Check subscriptions. Verify Game Pass availability in your region and whether your Xbox plan includes online multiplayer. Do not rely on an old catalog screenshot or launch promotion.
- Check the feature you actually need. Compare ultrawide support, remapping, HDR, ray tracing, upscaling, frame generation, and handheld use against your own hardware rather than assuming every option is available.
- Check the edition and local price. Confirm Standard or Premium, included content, currency, taxes, and any current discount. The Premium early-access window has already ended.
- Set up accounts before multiplayer. On Steam, decide whether to link a Microsoft account. Use the account you intend to keep so that the listed roaming saves, friends, and cross-platform invites are associated correctly.
Common mistakes and fixes
Expecting Steam to unlock the Xbox console copy
Steam is separately listed from Xbox Play Anywhere. If console access and shared Xbox progression are essential, buy or access the Xbox/Microsoft Store edition instead of assuming a Steam purchase will transfer.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Assuming every PC feature works on every GPU
Ray tracing, DLSS, FSR, frame generation, multi-frame generation, HDR, and Variable Rate Shading depend on hardware and software support. Update drivers, enable HDR on both Windows and the display when appropriate, and use the built-in benchmark to tune settings.
Confusing online co-op with split-screen
Online Campaign co-op supports up to four players, while the documented two-player split-screen mode is console-only. Select the mode that matches how your group is physically connected.
Forgetting the Xbox online subscription requirement
Xbox says online multiplayer requires a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer. Check your current plan before inviting friends; owning the game alone may not satisfy the console service requirement.
Treating launch bonuses as current value
Premium’s up-to-five-day early access was tied to launch and had elapsed by October 13, 2026. Evaluate the edition on its remaining content, not on that expired timing benefit.
Verdict
For a mixed Xbox-and-PC household, Xbox/Microsoft Store is the practical choice because Play Anywhere is explicitly designed for shared Xbox console and PC progression and achievements. For a PC-first player who wants Steam’s library, social features, ultrawide and handheld support, remappable controls, and graphics options, Steam is the better storefront. Multiplayer does not force everyone onto one store: Steam lists cross-platform play, online co-op, and optional Microsoft account linking. The deciding question is therefore where you want to own and play the game, not which platform has a universally better version.
