Start by installing the latest game update: The Coalition’s October 5, 2026 patch addressed several launch issues, including some Versus matches stuck at “Waiting for players” and the split-screen “Bilefrog-Kalona” sign-out error. If you are blocked in Campaign, reload the checkpoint. For anything that persists, check service status and report the exact symptom through official support.
Update the game before troubleshooting
Gears of War: E-Day launched on October 6, 2026, and the latest official patch identified here is dated October 5, just before global launch. The Coalition said that update included stability, performance, hardware-compatibility, and reporting improvements, as well as fixes for specific issues. Check the official October 5 patch notes and install any newer update available for your version before trying older advice. The patch notes confirm changes to particular issues, not that every similar symptom is resolved for every player.

Fixes and checks for specific errors
Versus Social stuck on “Waiting for players”
The October 5 patch notes say an issue that left some Versus Social matches on the “Waiting for players” screen was addressed. Update the game and try again. If the screen still hangs, record the mode, platform, time, and any accompanying error, then check the service-status page and contact Gears support through the routes linked in the official launch post.
#1 Best Overall
- AN ORIGIN STORY BEGINS — Fight alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the gripping origin story of Emergence Day, as the Locust Horde erupts from below.
- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
“Bilefrog-Kalona” after suspend and resume
The Coalition says it addressed a split-screen issue in which a player could be signed out after the game was suspended and resumed. Install the update before retrying. If the error recurs, note whether it followed suspend/resume, which console was involved, and what happened to each account; the patch notes do not establish a separate workaround.
Xbox authentication or sign-in trouble
The October 5 update improved Xbox authentication handling when the system clock differs significantly from the correct time. Check that your console’s date and time are accurate, then retry sign-in. The patch notes describe an improvement, not a prescribed settings procedure, so use current Xbox support guidance if authentication still fails.

Online-session instability
The patch notes also say online-session stability was improved when accessing session information. If a session still fails, first distinguish an ongoing service problem from a local issue by checking the official service-status page linked from the October 1 launch post. Include the exact message and the steps that reproduce the failure when reporting it.

If a Campaign encounter or objective will not progress
Reload the current checkpoint. In its September 30 launch known-issues post, Xbox Wire warned that playing through the entire game without reloading checkpoints or restarting could cause memory issues, and recommended reloading a checkpoint if an encounter or objective blocked progress. If that does not restore progress, capture the mission and objective, what you did immediately beforehand, and whether the issue repeats after restarting.

- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Campaign co-op progress and rewards
The September 30 known-issues post described a case in which a player joining an existing Campaign save could receive earlier secondary-objective and hardcase progress and related Forge rewards. The October 5 patch notes later say this Campaign reward behavior was addressed. If you still see unexpected shared progress or rewards after updating, report which player joined, the save involved, and what changed.
PC launch and performance symptoms
Game process remains after closing
The September 30 launch post said the game process might continue running after the player closed the game; it can be viewed and shut down in Windows Task Manager. Treat this as a documented launch issue, not proof of a hardware fault.
Benchmark overlay shows unexpectedly low FPS
The same post said the benchmark-mode performance overlay omits generated frames, so its FPS figure may be lower than the actual frame rate. That specific overlay limitation does not by itself establish poor game performance. The post is dated September 30, and may not reflect later changes.

Choose guidance for your PC storefront
On PC, identify whether the installation is through the Xbox app/Microsoft Store or Steam before seeking help. The August open-beta FAQ contained storefront-specific advice for the beta; it is not confirmation that those steps apply to the released game. Use current instructions from official Gears support for the retail version and client you use.

Do not apply beta fixes as if they were retail fixes
The August 2026 open-beta FAQ and update discussed beta-specific crashes, connection timeouts, matchmaking, controller recognition, account linking, Xbox Series S hitching, PC drivers, SSD guidance, and network ports. The FAQ explicitly cautioned, “Please remember, the Beta is not a final product.” Those details describe a beta build and are not established here as current instructions for the launched game. In particular, do not change router ports or install a particular driver solely on the strength of beta guidance; check current official support for your platform and version.
Report a bug that remains after updating
- Check service status. Use the service-status route linked from the official launch post if the problem affects online play or sign-in.
- Contact Gears support. The same launch post links to GearsofWar.com/support.
- Include enough detail to reproduce the issue. State your platform and, on PC, storefront; the exact error text; the mode or Campaign objective; what you were doing immediately before it happened; and whether restarting or reloading changes the result. Add screenshots when possible. The beta FAQ also requested detailed bug reports and screenshots, though its troubleshooting specifics apply to that beta.
The official materials establish the October 5 patch, the September 30 known-issues list, and the October 6 launch, but they do not establish a complete patch history after launch. Check current official notes before treating any listed issue as still open or definitively fixed.
