For French-door refrigerator reliability, GE has the stronger result in J.D. Power’s 2025 study; Samsung scored higher for French-door customer satisfaction. Those are separate brand-level survey measures, not guarantees about any particular model. If you’re choosing between the two, start with the exact refrigerator’s fit, layout, service options, and energy use—not the brand name alone.

What do the 2025 reliability and satisfaction results say?

J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Appliance Reliability & Service Study reported 65 problems per 100 GE French-door refrigerators, compared with 85 for Samsung and a segment average of 76. The study asked about appliances purchased one to three years before the survey and included service experiences from customers who had a brand-coordinated in-home service visit. These are reported problem rates for the study’s covered appliances—not lifetime failure rates, laboratory tests, or predictions for an individual model. See J.D. Power’s reliability study or its 2025 study report.

J.D. Power’s separate 2025 satisfaction study scored Samsung 718 for French-door refrigerators, placing it second, while GE scored 709. Satisfaction and reliability are different measures: one reflects customer satisfaction, the other reported problems. Neither establishes a universal winner. Read the 2025 satisfaction study.

How do GE and Samsung compare beyond the brand-level data?

The companies offer different designs and features across their ranges, so a comparison of two example models should not be mistaken for a controlled head-to-head test. The table summarizes what the cited U.S. manufacturer listings say about those particular examples; verify current availability and specifications on the live pages.

Example model Listed design and features Listed energy and fit details
GE GFE26JGMWW, 25.7 cu. ft. French-door refrigerator Conventional French-door format; Wi-Fi powered by SmartHQ; ENERGY STAR certification; limited one-year entire-appliance labor warranty listed. Dimensions and annual energy use: not stated in the cited listing details. GE’s official listing.
Samsung RF70F29DERAA, Bespoke 29 cu. ft. 4-Door French Door Refrigerator Four-door layout, FlexZone drawer, Inner Beverage Center, Wi-Fi, and ENERGY STAR certification. 685 kWh listed annual energy consumption; 35.75 inches wide, 70.25 inches high, and 34.25 inches deep with doors and hinges. Samsung’s official listing.

The listings describe refrigerators with different capacities and layouts. Samsung’s listed energy figure cannot establish that it uses more or less energy than the GE example without a comparable verified figure for that GE model. ENERGY STAR certification identifies qualifying products; it does not, by itself, determine which of two differently configured refrigerators will use less energy.

Which brand should you choose?

Choose GE if reliability evidence is your priority

GE’s lower reported problem rate than Samsung’s in J.D. Power’s 2025 French-door category is a reasonable point in its favor if you’re weighing brand-level reliability evidence. It does not prove that every GE model is more reliable than every Samsung model; check the exact model and local repair support before deciding.

Consider Samsung if its layout and features suit you

Samsung’s higher French-door satisfaction score in the 2025 study may matter to shoppers who value the experience reflected in that measure. Its cited Bespoke example adds a FlexZone drawer and Inner Beverage Center, as well as Wi-Fi. Decide whether those features solve a real need: extra functions and a different layout are not automatically advantages for every household.

Let model-level fit and service decide close calls

Before buying, compare the exact models’ warranty documents, parts support, and availability of service in your area. A longer parts term for a compressor, if offered, should not be assumed to cover repair labor for the same period. Include the installed cost—delivery, installation, haul-away, and any required filter or accessory—instead of comparing refrigerator prices alone.

What should you check before ordering?

  1. Measure the kitchen and delivery route. Check the opening’s width, height, and depth, plus door swing, ventilation clearances, water connection, and the route through entryways and hallways. Use the exact model’s installation guide. Samsung lists the RF70F29DERAA at 35.75 inches wide, 70.25 inches high, and 34.25 inches deep with doors and hinges; confirm the required clearances separately.
  2. Match the layout to how you store food. Compare French-door, four-door, or side-by-side designs; shelf adjustment; freezer access; door-bin space; and whether a convertible drawer would be useful.
  3. Inspect the ice and water setup. Check dispenser location, ice-maker count and placement, filter type, and how much interior space the system occupies. Confirm the replacement filter’s part number against the model.
  4. Compare energy figures for the exact models. Look for verified annual consumption and certification on each product listing or label. Do not infer an energy advantage from brand, capacity, or ENERGY STAR status alone.
  5. Decide whether connected features are worth using. Check what SmartHQ or SmartThings connectivity, screens, cameras, or alerts actually do, and whether Wi-Fi or an account is required for the functions you want.
  6. Read warranty terms and check local repair access. Compare what is covered, for how long, and whether parts and labor are treated differently. Check service availability and parts support where you live.
  7. Calculate the total purchase cost. Add delivery, installation, old-unit haul-away, and any required filter or accessory to the current refrigerator price.
