Neither Gboard nor Microsoft SwiftKey has a documented, independent accuracy or speed advantage for swipe typing. Both support tracing a finger across letters: Gboard calls the feature Glide typing, while SwiftKey calls it Flow. The better keyboard is the one that recognizes your language, names, slang and message patterns with fewer corrections.
SwiftKey offers unusually explicit controls for what happens after a flowed word, including corrections, next-word predictions and continuing across the spacebar. Gboard’s main qualification is language support: Google says Glide typing does not work with every language. Set up both, type the same phrases, and choose based on the edits you actually make rather than an unsupported universal winner.
What Gboard and SwiftKey call swipe typing
Gboard Glide typing
Gboard’s swipe feature is called Glide typing. You place a finger on the first letter, trace through the remaining letters of a word, and lift your finger when the word is complete. Gboard’s official instructions describe this as sliding your finger to type and note that the feature is not available for every language. Check the language enabled on your phone instead of assuming that an installed language automatically supports Glide typing. Google’s instructions are at Slide your finger to type on Gboard.

SwiftKey Flow
SwiftKey names its equivalent Flow. In addition to tracing individual words, SwiftKey documents a continuous gesture that can pass over the spacebar and continue into the next word without lifting your finger. Flow also exposes choices for what appears after a flowed word: corrections, next-word predictions, or a configuration that determines which suggestions are shown. Microsoft’s setup and feature description is in What is Flow and how do I enable it with Microsoft SwiftKey Keyboard?.

Gboard vs. SwiftKey for swipe typing at a glance
| Practical factor | Gboard | SwiftKey |
|---|---|---|
| Feature name | Glide typing | Flow |
| Basic gesture | Trace across letters and lift to enter a word | Trace across letters and lift to enter a word |
| Gesture across words | Not established in the cited Gboard documentation | Can continue over the spacebar into another word without lifting a finger |
| After-word behavior | The cited instructions describe Glide typing but do not document a comparable set of Flow choices | Can show word corrections or next-word predictions after a flowed word |
| Language support | Google warns that not all languages work with Glide typing | Flow depends on SwiftKey prediction support for the language and field |
| Password and restricted fields | Specific Glide exclusions are not stated in the cited page | Flow is unavailable where SwiftKey does not offer predictions, including password fields and some incompatible app fields |
| Accessibility interaction | No corresponding limitation is stated in the cited Gboard page | Android Explore By Touch disables Flow |
| Alternative gesture mode | Not applicable to SwiftKey’s Gestures setting | Flow and SwiftKey’s alternate Gestures setting cannot be enabled together |
| Documented performance winner | None | None |
This table separates documented behavior from missing evidence. Official support pages do not provide a current head-to-head test of swipe accuracy, words per minute or correction rate, so a claim that either keyboard is objectively faster or more accurate would go beyond the available evidence.
How to enable Glide typing in Gboard
Gboard’s exact menu wording can vary with Android version and the phone manufacturer’s settings app. The reliable approach is to open Gboard’s own settings while the keyboard is visible, then find the Glide typing option.
- Open a text field. Start a message, note or search box where Gboard appears.
- Open Gboard settings. Tap the settings gear on the keyboard. If the gear is hidden, open the keyboard’s options menu first and select Settings.
- Find the gesture-typing section. Look for Glide typing or a similarly named typing option and turn it on.
- Confirm the language. In Gboard’s Languages settings, select the language you actually use. Google states that Glide typing is unavailable for some languages, so the toggle or behavior can differ by language.
- Try a controlled phrase. Trace several ordinary words, then words containing names, abbreviations and punctuation that you commonly send. Watch whether the intended word appears before adding corrections.
If Glide typing is enabled but a trace produces separate letters or no word, first check that the active keyboard is Gboard and that the selected language supports the feature. Switching temporarily to another supported language is a diagnostic step, not a permanent solution for a language that lacks Glide typing.

- Open SwiftKey. Launch the Microsoft SwiftKey app from your app list.
- Tap Typing. This section contains SwiftKey’s input behavior controls.
- Choose Gesture input.
- Enable Flow. Return to a text field and trace across the letters of a word.
- Choose the post-word behavior. SwiftKey lets you select correction suggestions after a flowed word or display next-word predictions. The documented options add appropriate spacing automatically.
- Test the spacebar gesture. Continue the trace over the spacebar into the next word without lifting your finger, then compare that motion with your normal typing style.
Flow is not universally available in every field. SwiftKey says it needs to offer predictions in the field, which excludes password boxes and some app fields. Android’s Explore By Touch accessibility feature also disables Flow. In addition, SwiftKey’s Flow setting and its separate Gestures mode are mutually exclusive; if one is active, turn it off before testing the other.
Where the two keyboards differ during a swipe
Continuous multi-word gestures
SwiftKey is the only one of the two for which the cited documentation explicitly describes crossing the spacebar and continuing into another word. That can reduce the number of finger lifts for people who naturally write in long, uninterrupted motions. It is a workflow option, not proof that the resulting text will be more accurate.
Corrections and predictions after a word
SwiftKey documents a choice between showing corrections and showing next-word predictions after Flow input. Corrections are useful when the trace was ambiguous; predictions are useful when the next word is likely to be suggested correctly. SwiftKey also documents using Backspace to revisit corrections. Gboard’s cited Glide page explains the gesture but does not establish an equivalent set of post-word controls, so do not assume the two interfaces behave identically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNames, specialist terms and local vocabulary
Swipe recognition depends heavily on the language model and the words it knows. A keyboard may handle common words well yet miss a family name, street name, technical abbreviation or mixed-language phrase. Neither official source supplies a universal accuracy percentage, and neither source establishes a winner for these categories. Your own vocabulary is therefore a more useful comparison than a generic ranking.

Language, app fields and accessibility limits
Language availability
Google explicitly warns that not all languages support Glide typing. Before judging Gboard, verify the active language rather than testing only the keyboard’s default English layout. SwiftKey Flow also relies on prediction support: if SwiftKey does not provide predictions for the chosen language or field, Flow cannot operate there.
Password fields and incompatible apps
Password fields commonly suppress predictive input for security reasons. SwiftKey states that Flow is unavailable in password fields and in some other app fields where predictions are not offered. If Flow works in a note-taking app but disappears in a sign-in box, that is an expected field restriction rather than a broken installation. The cited Gboard page does not list an equivalent set of exclusions, so its silence should not be interpreted as a guarantee that Glide works in every secure or embedded field.
Explore By Touch
SwiftKey says Android’s Explore By Touch disables Flow. If you use that accessibility feature and the gesture does not respond, check the accessibility setting before changing keyboard data or reinstalling the app. The available Gboard documentation does not identify a matching Glide limitation.
Flow versus SwiftKey Gestures
SwiftKey offers another setting named Gestures. Microsoft documents Flow and Gestures as mutually exclusive. When comparing swipe typing, leave Flow enabled and the alternate Gestures mode disabled; otherwise you may be testing a different input system.

Privacy and learned typing data
Privacy settings are a configuration question, not evidence that one keyboard is a privacy winner. Microsoft’s SwiftKey support FAQ states: By default, nothing Microsoft SwiftKey learns about your typing leaves your device.
The same FAQ explains two optional changes: signing in with a Microsoft or Google account enables periodic transfer of word fragments to a Microsoft cloud service for synchronization, and opting into Help Microsoft to improve can share typing snippets and fragments for product improvement. Read the full qualification in Microsoft SwiftKey Keyboard: Sharing your typing data FAQ.
That statement describes SwiftKey’s defaults and opt-in controls; it is not an independent audit and it does not establish how Gboard compares. If data handling is decisive for you, inspect the account, backup and improvement-sharing choices on the keyboard you install, and keep optional sharing disabled unless you deliberately want those features.
A fair personal swipe-typing test
Because the official pages do not publish a current head-to-head benchmark, run the comparison under conditions that resemble your real use. This test is for your decision; it is not a claimed laboratory result.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Prepare the same conditions. Use the same Android phone, screen orientation, text field type, language, font size and approximate lighting for both keyboards. Disable one keyboard while testing the other so the wrong layout cannot appear.
- Write a representative phrase set. Include ordinary sentences, short replies, punctuation, names, numbers, slang and any specialist terms you use. A set of 20 to 30 phrases is large enough to reveal recurring problems without becoming burdensome.
- Enable the relevant feature. Turn on Gboard Glide typing, then SwiftKey Flow. For SwiftKey, note whether you prefer corrections or next-word predictions and whether you use the cross-space gesture.
- Enter every phrase without immediately fixing it. Let the keyboard’s first suggestion stand long enough to record what it produced. Then make the minimum corrections you would normally make.
- Record the useful measures. Count intended words that appeared correctly, wrong words, manual edits and occasions when you had to delete and retype. Also note whether a missing word is caused by the gesture, the language model or a field restriction.
- Repeat difficult phrases. A single missed trace can be user error. Repeat the phrases that failed several times and look for a pattern rather than treating one miss as decisive.
- Choose the lower-effort result. Prefer the keyboard that leaves you with fewer corrections and feels natural for your normal messages. If the totals are close, choose based on the interface, language coverage and privacy settings you value most.
| Record during the test | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Correct words on the first trace | Shows how often the intended result appears without intervention. |
| Wrong words requiring replacement | Captures correction effort, which a speed impression can hide. |
| Words that need deletion and retyping | Separates a minor suggestion change from a complete gesture failure. |
| Names and uncommon terms | Reveals whether your personal vocabulary is well represented. |
| Comfort with spacebar continuation | Indicates whether SwiftKey’s multi-word Flow is useful to your hand position. |
| Unavailable fields or languages | Prevents a feature restriction from being mistaken for poor recognition. |
Which keyboard should you choose?
Choose Gboard first when
- Your primary language is confirmed to support Glide typing and Gboard already fits your Android setup.
- You prefer a straightforward trace-and-lift gesture and do not need SwiftKey’s documented cross-space Flow.
- Your test produces fewer wrong words or less editing in the names, slang and phrases you actually type.
Choose SwiftKey first when
- You want to continue a gesture over the spacebar into the next word without lifting your finger.
- You value explicit control over corrections versus next-word predictions after a flowed word.
- Your usual fields provide SwiftKey predictions and you are comfortable with its language support and privacy choices.
Keep both available while deciding
There is no documented performance verdict that makes a longer trial unnecessary. Install or enable both, use each for the same representative phrases, and compare correction effort over several ordinary sessions. A keyboard that wins a short demonstration but mishandles your contacts, work terms or second language is not the better keyboard for you.

Troubleshooting swipe typing
The gesture does nothing
- Check which keyboard is active in the text field.
- Confirm that the relevant feature is enabled: Glide typing in Gboard or Flow in SwiftKey.
- Verify that the selected language supports the gesture.
- Try an ordinary text field instead of a password box or embedded app field.
SwiftKey Flow disappeared after changing accessibility settings
Check whether Android Explore By Touch is enabled. Microsoft states that Explore By Touch disables Flow. Also verify that SwiftKey’s alternate Gestures mode is not selected at the same time.
Words appear, but corrections are excessive
- Repeat the same phrases in both keyboards before changing settings; the issue may be language-specific.
- Test names and uncommon words separately from ordinary sentences.
- In SwiftKey, compare the correction and next-word-prediction choices, then keep the behavior that requires fewer edits.
- Use the keyboard’s language settings to remove an unintended secondary language that may be affecting recognition.
The keyboard works in notes but not at sign-in
That is consistent with SwiftKey’s documented restriction on fields without predictions, including password fields. Use the field’s normal typing method and do not treat the restriction as evidence that Flow is malfunctioning everywhere.
What the official evidence does—and does not—show
The official documentation confirms that both keyboards provide swipe typing on Android and describes different controls around the gesture. It does not provide a current, independent comparison of accuracy, speed, words per minute or correction rates. No reliable percentage or benchmark supports declaring Gboard or SwiftKey the universal winner.
