Gboard is the best first keyboard to try for most Android users who want Google search, glide typing, voice typing, translation and writing tools. Samsung Keyboard is the stronger starting point on a Galaxy phone or tablet when Samsung’s layout controls, One UI integration or S Pen handwriting workflow matter more.
Neither keyboard has a documented universal advantage in speed, prediction or accuracy. Features differ by device, language, region, app version and Android/One UI release, so the practical choice is the one that handles your languages, corrections, voice input and daily apps most comfortably.
Quick verdict by type of Android user
| If you care most about… | Try first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search and Google keyboard features | Gboard | Google documents keyboard search, glide typing, voice typing, translation, handwriting and writing tools, although availability varies. |
| A Samsung-style layout and extensive Galaxy settings | Samsung Keyboard | Samsung documents controls for layout, modes, size, transparency, themes, predictions, corrections, shortcuts and input providers. |
| Handwriting on a compatible Galaxy tablet | Samsung Keyboard | Samsung’s S Pen to text workflow converts handwriting in text fields into typed text on compatible tablets. |
| Google Voice Typing on a Galaxy device | Either keyboard | Samsung’s settings let you choose Samsung voice input or Google Voice Typing independently of the keyboard you select. |
| A particular language or translation workflow | Test both | Published feature lists do not establish equal support or equal recognition quality for every language and device. |
| Maximum typing speed or accuracy | Test both | No current, controlled source establishes a universal performance winner. |
Think of this as a starting decision, not a permanent commitment. Android lets you install both, switch between them and judge them with the same messages, passwords, names and languages you actually use.

Google’s documented input features
Google’s “Set up Gboard” guidance exposes settings for Glide typing, Text correction and Voice typing. Google’s help index also documents keyboard search, translation, handwriting and writing tools. Those are capabilities in Google’s documentation, not a guarantee that every Android phone, account, language or app exposes every control.

Keyboard search lets you look up information and send results from the keyboard instead of leaving the conversation. Translation can convert what you type into another language before you send it. Handwriting and writing tools can be useful when a language or task is easier to enter with a pen or when you want help reworking text. Availability can depend on the device and, for some writing features, whether the device has the required Gemini Intelligence support.
Glide typing and correction controls
Glide typing lets you drag a finger across letters without lifting it for each character. In Gboard settings, you can adjust whether this gesture is enabled and review text-correction behavior. The useful question is not whether glide typing exists, but whether its suggestions match your vocabulary: test names, technical terms, abbreviations and two-language conversations rather than a single stock sentence.
Voice typing is a setting, not a speed guarantee
Gboard’s voice-typing option can be enabled from its settings. Recognition depends on the device, microphone, language, network conditions and the app receiving the text. Official feature documentation does not provide a controlled comparison against Samsung’s voice input, so choose by trying the same dictated passage in the same room.

- You use several Android brands and want a familiar keyboard when changing phones.
- You regularly search, translate or use Google-oriented writing features from the keyboard.
- You prefer a compact, gesture-focused layout and do not need Samsung-specific controls.
- You want to evaluate a keyboard whose setup documentation is maintained by Google across Android devices.
What Samsung Keyboard brings to Galaxy devices
Deep layout and appearance controls
Samsung’s phone and tablet settings documentation covers language selection, predictive text, emoji and sticker suggestions, auto replace, spelling and grammar corrections, text shortcuts, themes, keyboard modes, size, transparency, layout and handwriting. It also documents voice-input and translation-provider choices. The exact menu names and available switches can change with Galaxy model, Android release, One UI version, region and carrier software.
Keyboard modes and size controls matter if you alternate between one-handed use, landscape typing and a tablet layout. Transparency and theme controls can improve readability over different wallpapers, while shortcuts can expand abbreviations into frequently reused phrases. These are customization advantages; they do not prove faster or more accurate prediction.
Prediction, replacement and writing assistance
Samsung separates several kinds of assistance: predictive text suggests the next word, auto replace can substitute a completed word, and spelling and grammar controls can flag or alter text. Emoji and sticker suggestions can be enabled separately. If an automatic replacement is frustrating, inspect the auto-replace and predictive-text settings rather than changing the entire keyboard.
Samsung’s documented input-provider choices
Samsung lets users select Samsung voice input or Google Voice Typing. That means a Galaxy owner can use Samsung Keyboard while selecting Google’s voice service, or change the voice provider without changing the on-screen keyboard. The same distinction applies to translation on compatible Galaxy tablets, where Samsung documents Samsung and Google as provider choices.

Feature-by-feature comparison
Google integration and keyboard search
Gboard is the direct choice when searching from the keyboard is central to your workflow. Google documents searching and sending results without leaving the current text field. Samsung Keyboard’s documented strengths are its Galaxy settings and input controls; the supplied Samsung materials do not establish an equivalent keyboard-search feature. If you frequently send addresses, facts or links in a chat, try Gboard’s search control in that chat app and confirm that your organization’s policies allow it.
Customization and One UI integration
Samsung exposes a broader set of Samsung-specific layout and appearance controls in its support documentation, including keyboard modes, size, transparency, themes, layout and text shortcuts. Gboard provides its own layout, glide-typing, correction and voice settings, but the two apps organize those controls differently. A feature appearing in one app’s menu may not have an identically named switch in the other.
Languages and translation
Samsung’s Galaxy Store listing claims support for over 370 languages. The listing result does not show a publication year or define whether the number counts keyboard languages, dialects, translation pairs or another unit, so it cannot be compared directly with a current Google language total. Gboard’s documentation highlights translation and handwriting but does not provide a directly comparable count in the materials used here.
Choose by testing your actual language combination. Add each required language, switch between them while composing a message, enter accented characters and proper names, and run a short translation in the apps you use. A large headline count is less useful than reliable switching for your specific languages.

Voice input
On Samsung devices, keyboard selection and voice-provider selection are separate decisions. Samsung documents both Samsung voice input and Google Voice Typing. Gboard exposes voice typing in its own settings, but the resulting recognition still depends on device and language support. Record the same 30- to 60-second paragraph with both providers, including punctuation commands and names, then check editing effort rather than judging from one word.
Handwriting and S Pen use
Samsung’s tablet guidance says, “Use your S Pen to write in search fields, address bars, and other text areas.” In the described workflow, handwriting is converted into text and pen gestures can be used for editing. The cited feature context specifies compatible tablets running Android 14 with One UI 6.1.1 or later; do not assume every Galaxy tablet or every earlier software version supports it.
This is a meaningful differentiator for a tablet owner who already writes with an S Pen. It is not a reason for a phone user to switch keyboards, and an S Pen must be compatible with the exact tablet model. If handwriting is your priority, verify the tablet’s software version and S Pen support before changing keyboard settings.
Rank #3
- Simply pragmatic: the S Pen adheres magnetically to the tablet so that it is always directly on the spot; also enjoy high pressure sensitivity with 4,096 pressure levels and fast response times
- Comfortable and solid: The S Pen writes with a barely noticeable input delay, so you almost feel like you're using a real pen
- Tailor-made accessories: the original Samsung S Pen is perfectly adapted to Samsung tablets and their uses and can thus offer optimal performance
Prediction, correction and comfort
Neither Google’s nor Samsung’s current official material establishes which keyboard predicts words more accurately or responds faster. Prediction quality changes with language, personal dictionary, correction settings, keyboard height, autocorrect tolerance and the app’s text field. Test both with realistic content: a work email, a message containing names and numbers, a URL, and a paragraph in each language you use.
How to switch keyboards safely
Install and enable Gboard
- Install or update Gboard from the Android app store, then open it.
- Follow Gboard’s setup prompt to enable it in the on-screen-keyboard list and make it available as an input method.
- Open Gboard’s settings and review Glide typing, Text correction and Voice typing.
- Add only the languages you use regularly so the language-switch key and suggestions remain manageable.
- Open a message or note, tap the keyboard icon or input-method control, and select Gboard.
Android labels differ by manufacturer. On many phones, the relevant controls are under Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard; Samsung devices commonly place them under Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default. Treat those paths as orientation rather than a promise of identical labels.
Switch to Samsung Keyboard on a Galaxy phone or tablet
- Open Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default.
- Tap Default keyboard and select Samsung Keyboard.
- Open Samsung Keyboard settings from the same area or from the keyboard’s gear icon.
- Configure languages, predictive text, auto replace, spelling and grammar, text shortcuts, themes, mode, size, transparency and layout as needed.
- Under voice-input settings, choose Samsung voice input or Google Voice Typing; this choice is independent of the keyboard app.
On a Galaxy tablet, inspect the handwriting and S Pen options after confirming that the tablet meets the Android 14 and One UI 6.1.1-or-later qualification described in Samsung’s tablet guidance.
Switch temporarily while typing
Many Android keyboards show a small keyboard icon in the navigation area or notification shade when more than one input method is enabled. Tap it and choose the other keyboard for a quick comparison. If the icon is absent, use the system’s physical or on-screen keyboard settings to change the default.
A fair 15-minute test that uses your own data
Official feature lists cannot settle comfort, recognition quality or prediction behavior. A short, repeatable test gives you a more useful answer than forum anecdotes.
- Match the setup. Add the same languages on both keyboards. Use the same keyboard height, phone orientation, text size and app.
- Type a fixed passage. Enter 100 to 150 words containing punctuation, numbers, names, abbreviations and terms from your work or study. Do it once with two-thumb typing and once with glide typing if you use that gesture.
- Test corrections. Deliberately make common typos, type a proper name and enter an email address. Note unwanted replacements and how many taps are needed to undo them.
- Test language switching. Write several sentences in each required language, switch mid-message, and check accented characters and word suggestions.
- Test voice input. Dictate the same 30- to 60-second paragraph with the same microphone position. Compare punctuation, names and editing effort.
- Test translation or search. If you need those features, perform the same task in the same app and record whether the control appears and completes the workflow.
- Test handwriting where relevant. On a compatible Galaxy tablet, write in a search field, address bar and ordinary text area with the S Pen, then edit the converted text.
- Decide on friction. Choose the keyboard that requires fewer corrections and setting changes in your actual work, not the one with the more impressive feature list.
Do not call the result a scientific accuracy or speed score. It is a personal fit check under your conditions.

Choose Gboard first when…
- You want Google’s documented keyboard search, translation, glide typing, voice typing or writing tools.
- You move between Android manufacturers and prefer a consistent starting point.
- Your priority is a straightforward gesture and correction setup rather than Samsung-specific appearance controls.
- You are willing to test whether the writing tools you want are available on your particular device and account.
Choose Samsung Keyboard first when…
- You use a Galaxy device and value Samsung’s documented layout, mode, size, transparency, theme and shortcut controls.
- You want Samsung’s S Pen to text workflow on a compatible Galaxy tablet running the specified software.
- You want to select Samsung or Google independently for voice input or, on compatible tablets, translation.
- Your typing feels more comfortable with Samsung’s arrangement of prediction and correction settings after a real-world test.
Keep both installed when…
- You use Gboard’s search or translation but prefer Samsung’s tablet handwriting workflow.
- One keyboard handles a work language better while the other is more comfortable for everyday messages.
- You are troubleshooting a missing feature and need a fallback while checking device or software compatibility.
Common problems and fixes
The keyboard does not appear in the chooser
Return to the system’s on-screen-keyboard or keyboard-list settings and confirm that the app is enabled. If it is enabled but missing, restart the phone, update the keyboard app and check for a pending Android or One UI update. Enterprise-managed devices can restrict input methods, so a work profile may require an administrator’s approval.

A language or feature is missing
Check the keyboard’s language list and the device’s region and software version. Feature documentation is not a promise of universal availability. Gboard’s writing tools can have additional device requirements, and Samsung’s S Pen workflow has the tablet qualification described above. Remove and re-add the language only after confirming that the device supports it.
Autocorrect keeps changing words
In Gboard, inspect Text correction; in Samsung Keyboard, inspect predictive text and Auto replace. Add frequently used names or technical terms to the personal dictionary, or disable the specific replacement control instead of turning off every suggestion.
Voice typing uses the wrong service
On a Galaxy device, open keyboard settings and review the voice-input provider. Samsung documents both Samsung voice input and Google Voice Typing, so changing the keyboard alone may not change the dictation service. Confirm the selected language and microphone permission in the app where you are dictating.
S Pen handwriting does not convert to text
Verify that the tablet is a compatible model, that Android 14 and One UI 6.1.1 or later are installed where required by Samsung’s guidance, and that the S Pen is supported and paired or recognized as applicable. Test in a standard search field or address bar before assuming the feature works in every third-party text box.
What the official information does not prove
There is no dated, directly comparable statistic in the available official material showing that either keyboard is faster, more accurate or better at prediction. The Samsung “over 370 languages” store claim is not a comparable, dated count because its definition and publication date are not supplied. The available material also does not establish a privacy winner or comprehensive compatibility for every Android model.
For privacy, review the current permissions, account settings and privacy policies for the keyboard and voice or translation services you enable. Do not infer a privacy difference from the keyboard’s brand alone. For performance, use the same-device test above and report your conditions if you share the result with others.
