Neither fuel is always cheaper. Diesel vehicles commonly deliver somewhat better fuel economy, but the lower fuel bill—if there is one—depends on the exact vehicles, local pump prices, annual mileage, route mix, purchase price, maintenance, and emissions equipment. Compare a specific gasoline model with a specific diesel model using the same assumptions; do not compare fuel types in isolation.
The short answer: calculate cost per mile, not MPG alone
Fuel cost per mile is the most useful starting point:
Fuel cost per mile = local price per gallon ÷ vehicle miles per gallon.

For an annual estimate, multiply that result by your yearly distance. Use each vehicle’s city and highway economy—or your own carefully recorded economy—in the same proportions. A diesel that travels farther on a gallon can still cost more to operate when diesel is substantially more expensive locally. Conversely, a diesel can have the lower fuel bill when its efficiency advantage is large enough to offset the price difference.

That calculation covers fuel only. A purchase-price premium, financing, insurance, maintenance, repairs, taxes, and resale value can determine the cheaper ownership choice even when one vehicle wins on fuel. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) Vehicle Cost Calculator is intended for this kind of high-level screening. It accepts vehicle and custom-vehicle inputs, driving habits, and fuel prices, and supports comparisons of up to eight vehicles. Its result is an estimate, not a guarantee of an individual driver’s costs.
Why diesel often gets better mileage
Gasoline and diesel engines extract energy differently. Most gasoline engines use spark ignition; diesel engines use compression ignition. As the DOE explains, “One difference is that diesel engines have a compression-ignited injection system rather than the spark-ignited system used by most gasoline vehicles.” Diesel fuel is also more energy-dense, so DOE fleet guidance says diesel and biodiesel vehicles generally achieve slightly higher fuel economy than comparable gasoline vehicles.
“Slightly higher” is the safer current generalization. An older DOE technical primer cited a broad historical estimate of 20–50% higher diesel fuel economy than comparable gasoline vehicles, but that estimate is more than a decade old and should not be applied automatically to current models. Aerodynamics, transmission gearing, vehicle weight, engine calibration, tires, drive system, model year, payload, towing, temperature, traffic, and driving style can matter more than the fuel label.

Compare vehicles in the same class and workload. A compact gasoline sedan versus a heavy-duty diesel pickup is not a clean fuel comparison; size, towing capacity, payload, age, condition, and equipment explain much of the difference. Published economy values are useful starting points, but DOE guidance recommends model-specific values or your own records when available because national defaults can differ significantly from real use.
A transparent way to compare fuel bills
Gather the same inputs for both vehicles
- Local regular-gasoline and diesel prices, recorded on the same date and in the same area.
- Annual miles, or distance per day multiplied by driving days and weeks.
- City/highway split that reflects your routine.
- Published city and highway MPG for each exact model, engine, drivetrain, and model year, or a documented personal average.
- Purchase price and financing assumptions.
- Maintenance, repair, insurance, taxes, and expected resale considerations.
- Workload, including passengers, cargo, towing, idling, hills, winter conditions, and trailer use.
Use a weighted MPG estimate
If a vehicle is rated at 28 MPG city and 38 MPG highway and your driving is 55% city and 45% highway, estimate gallons by route rather than averaging the two MPG figures directly:

- City miles = annual miles × 0.55.
- Highway miles = annual miles × 0.45.
- City gallons = city miles ÷ 28.
- Highway gallons = highway miles ÷ 38.
- Total gallons = city gallons + highway gallons.
- Annual fuel cost = total gallons × local price per gallon.
This method also works when the city/highway split is different for each household. If you have only a combined observed MPG, divide annual miles by that value and multiply by the local price.
Illustrative calculation (not a market claim)
Suppose a driver covers 15,000 miles per year. A gasoline vehicle averages 28 MPG and gasoline costs $3.80 per gallon; a diesel vehicle averages 34 MPG and diesel costs $4.20 per gallon. The gasoline vehicle uses about 535.7 gallons and costs about $2,036 for fuel. The diesel uses about 441.2 gallons and costs about $1,853. Under those declared assumptions, diesel saves about $183 per year. Change either MPG or pump price and the result changes; this example is a calculation method, not a prediction for a vehicle class.

Historical DOE figures: useful for method, not current pricing
A DOE 2022 fact sheet used $4.18 per gallon for regular gasoline and $5.51 per gallon for diesel when estimating model-year 2022 annual fuel costs. Its scenario assumed 15,000 miles per year and 55% city / 45% highway driving. Those are historical assumptions, not current prices and not a universal gasoline-versus-diesel result. Enter current local prices when making a purchase decision.
DOE fleet guidance also listed a January 2020 planning snapshot of $2.59 gasoline and $2.71 diesel per gallon (gasoline-equivalent context). Those figures are outdated fleet-planning inputs, not a current consumer comparison.
Fuel cost is only one part of ownership cost
A lower annual fuel bill may not recover a diesel vehicle’s higher acquisition or ownership costs. Build a total-cost comparison for the period you expect to keep the vehicle.

| Cost category | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Purchase price | Is the diesel version more expensive, and is the difference caused by engine, transmission, chassis, or equipment rather than fuel alone? |
| Financing | Does the higher purchase price increase interest paid over the loan term? |
| Fuel | What are annual gallons and cost using your local prices and driving mix? |
| Routine maintenance | What do the manufacturer’s schedules require for oil, filters, fluids, and inspections? |
| Emissions equipment | Does the diesel use particulate filters, selective catalytic reduction, exhaust-fluid systems, sensors, or other aftertreatment that may require service? |
| Repairs | Are likely repairs more expensive, and are qualified technicians available locally? |
| Insurance, taxes, and registration | Do the vehicles differ in premiums, fees, or taxation in your jurisdiction? |
| Resale value | What do comparable vehicles with similar age, mileage, condition, and equipment sell for in your market? |
Do not claim a universal break-even mileage. The available material does not establish a current general gasoline-versus-diesel break-even point or a national retail-price comparison. Calculate break-even only for named vehicles and declared assumptions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Break-even formula for a specific pair
First find the annual fuel saving of the lower-cost vehicle. Then divide the diesel vehicle’s extra upfront and ownership cost by that annual saving:
Break-even years = additional diesel ownership cost ÷ annual fuel-cost savings.
If annual fuel cost is higher for diesel, there is no fuel-based break-even in that scenario. If the saving is small, a repair or resale difference can overwhelm it.
Use the DOE/AFDC Vehicle Cost Calculator correctly
- Open the DOE/AFDC Vehicle Cost Calculator and select the closest records for the gasoline and diesel vehicles you are actually considering.
- Use custom-vehicle inputs when the exact model, trim, engine, model year, or fuel type is not represented.
- Enter your annual distance, days driven, weeks driven, and highway share rather than accepting defaults that do not match your routine.
- Replace default fuel prices with current local prices for regular gasoline and diesel.
- Check the displayed fuel-economy assumptions against the vehicle’s published information and your own fuel logs.
- Run a second scenario with realistic high and low fuel prices or a different city/highway mix to test sensitivity.
- Compare the output with purchase price and ownership costs outside the calculator; the tool is a high-level screening aid, not an individualized guarantee.
Gasoline and diesel fuel are not interchangeable
Fuel choice is determined by the engine and manufacturer instructions. A gasoline engine’s spark-ignition design and a diesel engine’s compression-ignition design require different fuels and fuel-system specifications. A diesel vehicle should not be treated as a gasoline vehicle with a different pump price, and a gasoline vehicle should not be filled with diesel.

If gasoline is put in a diesel vehicle
Do not start the engine or turn the ignition on if you can avoid it; starting can circulate the wrong fuel through the pump and injectors. Move the vehicle only as necessary to reach a safe position, contact the manufacturer, roadside service, or a qualified repair facility, and follow their draining and inspection instructions. If the engine has already run, the response may require draining the tank and fuel system and checking components for damage. The correct procedure depends on the vehicle and how far the wrong fuel traveled.
If diesel is put in a gasoline vehicle
Do not drive it. Diesel can cause poor running, stalling, smoke, or failure to start, and the vehicle may need the tank and fuel system drained before normal operation. Consult the owner’s manual and a qualified technician for model-specific recovery steps. Do not assume that topping off with the correct fuel will make the mixture safe.
Diesel aftertreatment and short-trip use
Many modern diesel vehicles use additional emissions-aftertreatment components. Depending on the model, these can include a diesel particulate filter, oxidation catalyst, selective catalytic reduction hardware, exhaust-fluid injection, temperature and pressure sensors, and related controls. The owner’s manual explains required fluids, warning lights, regeneration behavior, and operating conditions. These systems can add maintenance and repair considerations that a simple MPG comparison misses.
Frequent short trips, extended idling, low-speed operation, heavy towing, and cold weather can change how an aftertreatment system operates. Read the manual before purchase and ask the manufacturer or dealer whether your normal use is appropriate for that model. Never remove, defeat, or modify emissions equipment; doing so can violate emissions laws and create reliability and warranty problems.
Biodiesel blends and warranty compatibility
Biodiesel is not a blanket substitute for diesel in every vehicle. AFDC states that B5 (a blend containing up to 5% biodiesel) is approved for all diesel vehicles. Many original-equipment manufacturers approve B20, containing up to 20% biodiesel, but owners should verify warranty approval before using higher blends. The exact fuel specification, blend limit, storage guidance, and seasonal restrictions are model- and market-specific.

- Check the fuel-filler label and any service bulletins.
- Confirm the permitted biodiesel blend for your model year and engine.
- Verify that the fuel sold locally meets the required standard.
- Keep records if warranty documentation requires approved fuel.
Gasoline grade matters too
Choosing gasoline versus diesel is separate from choosing the correct gasoline octane. A DOE 2024 fact sheet reported that 26.7% of model-year 2023 light-duty vehicle configurations required premium gasoline and 26.3% recommended premium gasoline. Those figures concern gasoline octane recommendations, not diesel compatibility. Follow the vehicle manual: “regular,” “premium recommended,” and “premium required” have different financial and operating implications.
Compare like with like
| Comparison question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Same vehicle class? | Weight, aerodynamics, tires, and chassis can dominate economy differences. |
| Same model year and condition? | Age, wear, software, emissions rules, and maintenance history affect cost. |
| Same workload? | Towing and payload may justify diesel capability but sharply change fuel use. |
| Same annual mileage? | A high-mileage driver has more opportunity to benefit from a lower cost per mile. |
| Same route pattern? | City congestion, highway speed, hills, weather, and idling alter real economy. |
| Same fuel assumptions? | Prices must be local, current, and recorded at the same time. |
| Same ownership horizon? | Upfront premiums and resale effects depend on how long you keep the vehicle. |
If the candidates differ in size, towing role, age, or condition, state that limitation instead of attributing every cost difference to fuel type.
Common mistakes that produce a misleading answer
- Comparing MPG without prices: higher MPG does not automatically mean lower cost per mile.
- Using national or old price defaults: fuel prices vary by location and date; replace defaults with your own local figures.
- Averaging city and highway MPG incorrectly: weight miles by your actual route mix.
- Comparing unlike vehicles: a heavy towing vehicle and a light commuter car answer different needs.
- Ignoring purchase and repair costs: fuel savings can be smaller than a price premium or major repair.
- Assuming diesel is best for every workload: short trips and low annual mileage may not justify diesel complexity.
- Using the wrong fuel or blend: follow the manual and warranty, especially for biodiesel.
- Treating calculator output as a promise: estimates cannot account perfectly for traffic, weather, payload, driving style, or vehicle condition.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose one gasoline and one diesel vehicle that genuinely meet the same transportation or work requirement.
- Record current local regular-gasoline and diesel prices.
- Collect model-specific city and highway MPG, then calculate gallons for your annual mileage and route split.
- Run the assumptions through the DOE/AFDC calculator and a spreadsheet you can audit.
- Add purchase price, financing, scheduled service, likely repairs, insurance, taxes, and resale assumptions.
- Read each manual for fuel grade, biodiesel limits, maintenance intervals, and aftertreatment requirements.
- Stress-test the result with realistic fuel-price and mileage changes.
- Select the vehicle whose total cost and capability fit your use—not simply the one with the higher advertised MPG.
Frequently overlooked details before buying
Annual mileage is a financial lever
Someone driving a few thousand miles annually has fewer gallons over which to recover a diesel price premium. A high-mileage driver has more exposure to fuel-price differences, but only the actual per-mile savings determine whether that matters.
Capability can be worth more than fuel economy
Diesel torque, cooling systems, transmissions, and chassis options may be valuable for sustained towing or commercial workloads. If that capability is the reason for the purchase, compare the complete job the vehicle performs rather than demanding that fuel savings alone justify it.
Your records beat generic assumptions
After buying, retain fuel receipts or use a consistent fill-up log. Divide miles driven between fills by gallons added, and separate towing, winter, and highway periods when possible. Those observations can replace generic MPG assumptions in a future ownership decision.
