Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Garry's Mod servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
If your Garry’s Mod server does not appear in the Internet tab, check the settings that control public registration before changing anything else. Set sv_lan 0, remove any +hide_server 1 launch option, give the server a valid Game Server Login Token (GSLT) for App ID 4000, and forward the game port—normally UDP 27015—to the server. Then check the host firewall, outbound Steam connectivity, and whether your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT).
An empty or nearly empty server can also take time to appear, and there is no documented fixed delay. Use direct connection and the checks below to distinguish a listing delay from a server that cannot be reached from the public Internet.

Start with this five-minute triage
- Open
garrysmod/cfg/server.cfgand make sure it containssv_lan 0. Save the file and restart the dedicated server. - Inspect the launch command or startup script and remove
+hide_server 1if it is present. - Confirm that the launch line supplies a valid GSLT with
+sv_setsteamaccount. The token is generated for App ID 4000, and each server should have its own token. - Forward port 27015 from the router to the server’s fixed local IP. Open the host firewall for the same port. Because published guidance differs on transport, allowing both UDP and TCP 27015 is the cautious configuration; UDP is used for gameplay and queries, while TCP is associated with RCON in one commonly cited setup.
- From a different network, try a direct connection to the public address. If that fails and the router’s Internet address is not truly public, investigate CGNAT.
These checks cover the most common reasons a dedicated server is absent from the Internet list. Work through them in order so that a harmless listing delay is not confused with a routing failure.
Make sure the server is not LAN-only
Set sv_lan to zero
Garry’s Mod treats sv_lan 1 as a LAN restriction. A server in that mode is intended for local-network play and will not register as a normal public Internet server. In garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg, use:

sv_lan 0
Do not rely on editing a similarly named file in a different installation. Dedicated-server operators often have more than one Garry’s Mod directory, so verify the path used by the running instance. Restart after saving; changing the file while the process is running does not reliably re-register the server.
Remove the hide flag
A launch option can override otherwise correct configuration. Search the service file, batch file, container command, or control-panel startup field for:
Recommended Free Tools
+hide_server 1
Delete the option or change it so the server is not hidden, then restart. If a management panel regenerates the launch line, remove the flag there rather than only editing a temporary process command.
Check that you are looking in the Internet tab
The LAN and Internet filters are separate. A server may be visible on the same home network while remaining absent from the public list because it is LAN-only, because the browser is filtered to LAN, or because the public registration has not completed. Clear restrictive filters while testing and refresh after the process has finished starting.
Give the server a valid Game Server Login Token
Sources used by server administrators identify a Game Server Login Token (GSLT) as a requirement for normal public registration. The token is generated under Steam App ID 4000. Use one token per dedicated server and pass it on the startup command with +sv_setsteamaccount.

srcds.exe -game garrysmod +map gm_construct +maxplayers 16 -port 27015 +sv_setsteamaccount TOKEN_VALUE
The executable name and other arguments vary by operating system and installation, but the important part is that the token belongs to Garry’s Mod (App ID 4000) and is attached to the instance that should appear in the browser. Keep the token out of public screenshots, repositories, and support posts.
Symptoms of a token problem
- The server starts locally but never appears on the Internet list.
- Startup output reports an invalid, expired, or rejected account token.
- One instance is visible while another, launched from a copied configuration, is not.
Read the dedicated-server console from the beginning of startup rather than only the final map-change message. If the token is rejected, create or assign a replacement token and restart. A token that was copied with an extra space, truncated, or assigned to the wrong application can fail just like a missing token.
Open and forward the game port
Use the server’s actual listening port
The standard Garry’s Mod port is 27015. If the launch command specifies another value with -port, that value—not 27015—is the port that must be allowed and forwarded. The router rule must send traffic to the same internal port on the machine running the server.
| Traffic | Port guidance | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Gameplay and server queries | UDP 27015 is the normal choice | Forward UDP 27015 to the dedicated server and allow it through the host firewall. |
| RCON or other TCP-dependent functions | Some guidance associates TCP with RCON | Allow TCP 27015 as a cautious measure when your setup uses it; do not assume opening TCP alone publishes the server. |
| Custom port | The value supplied by -port |
Use that exact value in the router, firewall, and any external test. |
Published setup guidance is not completely consistent about whether TCP 27015 must be forwarded for listing. UDP is the essential gameplay and query transport; allowing both transports on the chosen port avoids a needless mismatch, provided your firewall policy permits it.
Create a reliable router rule
- Give the server computer a DHCP reservation or static private address, such as
192.168.1.50, so the forwarding target does not change. - Create a port-forward rule for the server port. Set the external and internal port to 27015 unless you intentionally use a different external mapping.
- Select UDP. Add a TCP rule for the same port if your configuration needs RCON or you want the cautious dual-transport setup.
- Save or apply the router configuration, then restart the server and refresh the browser.
Do not forward the port to the router itself, a different computer, or a private address that changed after a reboot. If the server is in a virtual machine or container, the forwarding chain has another hop: the router must reach the host, and the host must pass the traffic to the guest’s exposed port. A port-redirection mismatch has been reported anecdotally, but it is not established as a general Garry’s Mod rule; verify every mapping in your own setup.

Allow the port through the host firewall
Operating-system firewalls can drop packets even when the router is configured correctly. Create an inbound rule for the actual server executable or for the selected UDP port, and add TCP only if your setup requires it. Temporarily disabling a firewall can be a diagnostic test, but restore it immediately and replace the test with a narrow allow rule.
Verify that something is listening
Check the server console for its bind and port messages. On a Linux host, an administrator can inspect listening sockets with:
ss -lunp | grep 27015
On Windows PowerShell, the equivalent local check is:
Get-NetUDPEndpoint -LocalPort 27015
These commands only prove that a process has opened a local socket. They do not prove that packets traverse the router or that Steam can query the server. For that, test from a different Internet connection, such as a phone hotspot or a remote machine, using an external UDP-capable port test. A test from inside the same LAN can succeed even when the public route is broken.
Rule out carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT)
Port forwarding cannot make a server public when the ISP places your connection behind carrier-grade NAT. In that arrangement, the router receives a private or shared address and the ISP performs another translation upstream. Incoming connections stop at the ISP’s NAT layer, so no rule in your home router can deliver them to the server.

Compare the two addresses
- Read the WAN or Internet IPv4 address shown by the router.
- From a device on that connection, check the public IPv4 address reported by an external “what is my IP” service.
- If the router shows a private address, a shared carrier range, or an address different from the public value, the connection may be behind CGNAT.
Do not publish either address in a support forum. Ask the ISP whether the line has a publicly routable IPv4 address and whether inbound ports are blocked. The exact address ranges and terminology vary by provider, so the ISP’s answer is the authoritative confirmation.
What to do if CGNAT is confirmed
Request a public IPv4 address or an appropriate static-address service if the ISP offers one. If that is unavailable, run the dedicated server on a VPS or game-server host that supplies a public address. A relay or tunneling service can be another architecture, but it adds configuration and latency and is not the same as ordinary router forwarding. IPv6 may help only when the server, ISP, router, firewall, and players all support it; it does not automatically solve an IPv4-only listing path.
Check outbound access to Steam
Registration is not only an inbound-port problem. The server must be able to contact Steam’s services, and a local firewall, security suite, DNS failure, or restrictive network can interfere with that outbound connection.
Use the Steam browser as a comparison test
If the Steam Server Browser also fails to load servers on the same PC and network, a local firewall or network policy may be blocking access to the Valve master-server service. This comparison does not prove the dedicated server is healthy, but it separates a client-side browser problem from a server-side publishing problem.
- Allow the dedicated-server executable and Steam-related components through the host firewall.
- Check that DNS resolves normally and that the machine’s clock is accurate; authentication systems can reject badly skewed time.
- Review security software logs for blocked outbound connections rather than turning protection off permanently.
- Test from another network if the machine is on a school, office, hotel, or other network with restricted outbound traffic.
After changing an outbound rule, restart the server so it can establish a fresh registration session.

Allow for listing delay without mistaking it for failure
Empty or very low-population servers may not appear immediately in the browser. No fixed delay is established, so repeatedly restarting every few seconds can make diagnosis harder and may reset the registration process.
Use a direct connection while waiting. In the Garry’s Mod console, enter:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →connect PUBLIC_IP:27015
Replace the address and port with the public values for the server. If direct connection works from another network but the browser is still empty, the server is reachable and the remaining issue is registration, browser filtering, or propagation time. If direct connection fails, return to port forwarding, firewall, and CGNAT checks rather than waiting longer.
When several dedicated servers are running
A documented support case describes only one of multiple dedicated servers appearing on the Internet list. That is a single low-confidence report, not evidence of a universal server-count limit. Treat it as a configuration-isolation problem.
Give every instance its own identity
- Use a unique game port for each instance, such as 27015, 27016, and so on, and forward each chosen port separately.
- Assign a separate GSLT to each server.
- Keep each instance’s
server.cfg, map cycle, hostname, and launch options in the directory actually used by that process. - Check that a copied startup script did not leave
sv_lan 1,+hide_server 1, or the same token on the second instance. - Confirm that no two processes are trying to bind the same port.
Stop all but one instance and verify it from an external network. Add the other servers back one at a time, checking the console and public reachability after each change. This exposes port collisions and copied-token errors without changing several variables at once.
An end-to-end diagnostic sequence
- Confirm the process. Start the intended dedicated-server build, watch the console for errors, and verify that it reaches the map without exiting.
- Confirm public settings. Check
sv_lan 0, remove+hide_server 1, and verify the Internet tab is not filtered to LAN or an incompatible game mode. - Confirm identity. Attach a valid App ID 4000 GSLT with
+sv_setsteamaccount; use a distinct token for each instance. - Confirm listening. Verify that the selected port is open locally and that the launch option, configuration, firewall, and router all use the same number.
- Confirm forwarding. Send UDP 27015, or the custom port, to a fixed private address. Add TCP when required by your RCON or firewall design.
- Confirm the public route. Test direct connection from a different network. A successful outside connection proves the basic path even if the browser has not refreshed.
- Confirm the ISP path. Compare the router WAN address with the public address and ask the ISP about CGNAT when they differ.
- Confirm outbound registration. Check local security logs and the Steam browser if the server is reachable but never listed.
- Wait once, then recheck. Give an empty server time to register; there is no guaranteed interval. Refresh after the above checks instead of repeatedly changing settings.
Common symptoms and the most likely cause
| What you see | Likely explanation | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Visible on LAN, absent from Internet | sv_lan 1, a hide flag, or missing public registration |
Set sv_lan 0, remove +hide_server 1, and verify the GSLT. |
| Console rejects account authentication | Missing, invalid, expired, or misassigned GSLT | Create or assign a token for App ID 4000 and restart with +sv_setsteamaccount. |
| Direct connection fails from another network | Wrong port, firewall, router forwarding, or CGNAT | Check the listening socket, forwarding target, host rule, and WAN/public-address match. |
| Direct connection works, browser remains empty | Listing delay, browser filter, or outbound registration issue | Clear filters, confirm Steam access, and allow time for an empty server to appear. |
| Only one of several servers is listed | Port collision, duplicated token, or copied per-instance configuration | Use unique ports and tokens, then bring instances online one at a time. |
| Router rule appears correct but outside tests time out | CGNAT or an upstream ISP firewall | Compare WAN and public addresses and ask the ISP whether inbound IPv4 is available. |
What is not established
There is no published percentage or study showing how often Garry’s Mod servers fail to appear. There is also no confirmed 2026 change to the Steam master server that would explain this behavior broadly. Diagnose the individual server’s settings and network path rather than assuming a platform-wide outage.

A public Garry’s Mod listing depends on four layers working together: public settings (sv_lan 0 and no hide flag), a valid App ID 4000 GSLT, reachable game ports, and outbound access to Steam. If direct connection from another network succeeds, wait for listing propagation; if it fails, focus on forwarding, firewall rules, and CGNAT.
