If Garry’s Mod shows no servers, a blank browser, or an endless loading spinner, first find out whether the failure is limited to GMod. Open Steam’s built-in Server Browser and test another Source game. If both also fail, investigate Steam connectivity, firewall rules, your router or ISP, the hosts file, or a Valve master-server outage. If Steam’s browser and another Source game work, repair Garry’s Mod locally by resetting its firewall permissions, verifying files, trying -autoconfig, and temporarily disabling addons.
The sequence below keeps the low-risk, reversible checks first and separates a client problem from a missing individual community server. No authoritative source publishes a success percentage for these repairs, so treat each step as a diagnostic test rather than a guaranteed cure.
Start with a scope test, not a reinstall
A blank Garry’s Mod list can originate in four places: the GMod installation, Steam’s client connectivity, your network, or the servers and master-server infrastructure that publish listings. The fastest way to identify the layer is to compare browsers before changing files.
Open Steam’s Server Browser
- Leave Steam running and open its tray-menu option for Servers (the exact wording can vary slightly with Steam’s current interface).
- Wait for the browser to populate. Test more than one tab or game filter so that a single empty filter is not mistaken for an outage.
- Keep the result for the next decision: a working Steam browser points toward GMod; an empty Steam browser points toward Steam or the network.
Test another Source game
Launch another installed Source game and open its multiplayer browser. Facepunch’s troubleshooting flow uses this comparison because Source games rely on related discovery services. Record whether that game lists servers, whether the list is delayed, and whether joining a known server works.

If only one community server is absent while other entries appear, skip broad client repairs at first. The server may be offline, unlisted, misconfigured, or unable to authenticate with Steam.
Reset Windows firewall permissions for Steam and Source
Steam Support’s documented repair is to remove stale application rules and let Steam create current rules again. Updates can leave permissions attached to an old executable path or version, so this step is useful when Steam’s browser and GMod fail together.
Remove stale entries
- Exit Steam completely: use Steam > Exit, then confirm Steam is no longer running in the notification area or Task Manager.
- Open your firewall’s allowed-app or application-rule list. In Windows Security, this is under Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall; third-party firewalls use their own rule manager.
- Remove or reset old rules for these Steam and Source executables:
steaminstall.exe,steam.exe,hl.exe,hl2.exe, andsteamTmp.exe. If your firewall shows a rule for a file that no longer exists, remove that stale rule as well. - Start Steam again. When the firewall prompts for access, allow both TCP and UDP on the networks you actually use. Do not grant access to an unrelated executable with a similar name.
- Restart the computer, then repeat the Steam-browser and GMod tests.
Steam explicitly says, “We do not recommend leaving your firewall disabled.” Do not use a permanently disabled firewall as a workaround. A permission reset is safer and reversible; re-enable protection immediately after any controlled test.
When permissions keep reverting
Security suites can recreate a deny rule after an update, profile change, or executable replacement. Check both Windows Firewall and any third-party security product, and make sure Steam is allowed on the network profile you are using. If you moved the Steam library or installed a game on another drive, update the rule to the executable’s current path rather than approving an old copy.

Check Steam status, router limits, and ISP filtering
When multiple Source games and Steam’s browser are empty, local GMod repairs cannot restore a service that your network cannot reach.
Check for a Steam outage
Look at Steam’s official server-status information and retry after maintenance or an incident has cleared. An outage can make the list appear to load forever even when your installation is healthy. Avoid repeatedly reinstalling while the service is unavailable; that changes local files without repairing the upstream connection.

- Restart the router once, then test again after it has fully reconnected.
- Check parental-control, gaming, DNS-filtering, and “safe browsing” features that may block Steam or game-server traffic.
- If possible, test the computer on a different network, such as a phone hotspot. A working list on the alternate connection implicates the original router, ISP, or network policy.
- Ask an ISP or network administrator whether outbound Steam traffic is filtered. Steam warns that required ports cannot be remapped to HTTP or an arbitrary custom range; a web proxy is not a substitute for the required game traffic.
Do not forward random ports or copy a port list from an unrelated game. The client normally needs outbound access, while inbound forwarding is primarily a server-operator concern.
Rule out a damaged hosts file
A manually edited hosts file can redirect or block service names used for discovery. If the problem affects every Source game and Steam’s browser, inspect the hosts file for entries that deliberately block Steam or Valve domains. Remove only entries you understand, keep a backup, and avoid downloading a replacement from an unknown site. If you cannot identify a line confidently, ask an administrator or use your operating system’s documented network-reset procedure.

Repair Garry’s Mod when Steam itself works
If Steam’s Server Browser and another Source game list servers, focus on GMod’s local state. The following repairs are supported by Facepunch’s startup guidance and are ordered from least disruptive to more targeted.
Verify the game files
- In Steam, open Library, right-click Garry’s Mod, and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files (older Steam layouts may label this Local Files).
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Launch GMod after the process completes and test the browser before changing another setting.
Verification replaces missing or damaged files. It does not remove every addon conflict or repair a blocked network path, so interpret the result alongside the scope tests.

Try the -autoconfig launch option
- Open GMod’s Properties from the Steam Library.
- On the General page, find Launch Options.
- Enter
-autoconfig, close the properties window, and launch the game. - Test the server browser. If it starts normally, remove
-autoconfigfrom Launch Options so it is not applied on every start.
This option resets Source engine configuration to detected defaults. It can change graphics or input settings, so note custom values you want to restore.
Disable addons safely
Third-party addons can interfere with menus, filters, network hooks, or startup even when Steam is reachable. Disable addons temporarily through GMod’s addon management interface, restart the game, and test with a clean set. Re-enable them in small groups to identify a conflict. Keep a list of what you changed; deleting every addon immediately makes it harder to find the offending package and may remove saved configuration you wanted to keep.

Escalate Steam configuration repair carefully
Use Steam’s configuration-repair procedure only after the browser comparison, firewall reset, status check, and GMod repairs. Steam’s availability guidance calls for preserving key files before removing other Steam data.
- Exit Steam completely.
- Preserve
steam.exeand thesteamappsfolder. The latter contains installed-game data; deleting it unnecessarily can force large downloads. - Follow Steam’s documented cleanup instructions to remove the other Steam files it identifies, rather than deleting the entire installation indiscriminately.
- Relaunch Steam and sign in if prompted, then repeat the Server Browser test.
The exact files and folders in Steam’s current instructions can change. Read the live Steam Support procedure before deleting anything, and keep a backup of any configuration or library locations that matter to you. This escalation has a wider blast radius than resetting one firewall rule, so it is not the first response to a GMod-only symptom.

A healthy list with one absent community server usually indicates a server-side condition rather than a broken client. Check whether the server appears for friends in the same region, whether its address or name changed, and whether it is undergoing maintenance. A filter, full capacity, password requirement, or listing configuration can also hide it.
GSLT is an operator requirement
The Garry’s Mod Wiki states: “Starting with the May 2020 update, all Garry’s Mod servers should have a GSLT (Steam Game Server Login Token).” A Garry’s Mod Steam Game Server Login Token authenticates and publishes a server; obtaining or replacing one is a server-operator task, not a client-side repair. If you run the missing server, review its token, startup parameters, account eligibility, and listing configuration. If you are only a player, provide the operator with the symptom and your scope-test results instead of changing your local Steam files.

Common mistakes that waste time
- Reinstalling first: a reinstall cannot fix a Valve outage, blocked router traffic, or a denied firewall rule.
- Disabling the firewall permanently: this removes protection and does not identify which rule is wrong. Reset the application permissions instead.
- Deleting the whole Steam folder: preserve
steam.exeandsteamappswhen following Steam’s configuration-repair guidance. - Changing random ports: Steam says required ports cannot be remapped to HTTP or an arbitrary custom range.
- Assuming one missing server means a client failure: confirm whether other listings work and ask the operator about uptime, filters, and GSLT.

A concise recovery checklist

Only as a brief, controlled diagnostic if you understand the security risk; Steam Support does not recommend leaving it disabled. The preferred repair is removing stale rules and granting the named Steam and Source executables TCP and UDP access when prompted.
Will verifying Garry’s Mod files remove my addons?
File verification repairs the installation files Steam tracks. Addons are a separate source of conflicts, so disable them temporarily through GMod’s addon controls when testing rather than deleting them automatically.
