Choose the Garmin Venu 3 if your wrist accommodates a 45 mm case and you want Garmin’s longer stated smartwatch-mode battery life: up to 14 days. Choose the Venu 3S if a 41 mm case, 1.2-inch display and 110–175 mm wrist range fit you better. Garmin rates the Venu 3S for up to 10 days in smartwatch mode. With the always-on display enabled, both are rated for up to 5 days, so the smaller watch does not gain an always-on battery advantage.
Those figures are manufacturer estimates rather than independent test results. Garmin says actual endurance changes with activity tracking, wrist heart-rate monitoring, notifications, GPS, connected sensors, display behavior and other enabled features. The current specifications and manual are the right references for this choice: Garmin Venu 3 specifications, Garmin Venu 3S specifications and the Venu 3 series owner’s manual.
The decision in one minute
The two watches use the same Venu 3 series platform, but they are not merely color or styling variants. The Venu 3 is physically larger, has a larger and higher-resolution display, accepts wider bands and carries Garmin’s longer normal-use estimate. The Venu 3S is shorter and lighter, with a smaller screen and a wrist range aimed at people who find a 45 mm watch bulky.

- Pick Venu 3: You want the largest display, a 45 mm case feels comfortable, and the extra four days in Garmin’s smartwatch-mode estimate matter.
- Pick Venu 3S: Your wrist is nearer the 110–175 mm range, you prefer a less prominent watch, or the 41 mm case is more comfortable for sleep and all-day wear.
- Do not choose on headline days alone: Always-on display use cuts both models to a stated maximum of five days, and GPS, music, notifications and sensors can reduce runtime further.
There is no universal winner. Fit determines whether you will wear the watch consistently; battery priorities determine how often you will charge it.

Size, wrist fit and weight
Garmin lists a 4 mm difference in case diameter, but that difference is visible on the wrist because the case is also the watch’s visual frame. Both cases are 12 mm thick. The Venu 3S is 7 g lighter with its included silicone band, while its narrower band also changes how the watch looks and feels.
| Specification | Venu 3 | Venu 3S |
|---|---|---|
| Case dimensions | 45 × 45 × 12 mm | 41 × 41 × 12 mm |
| Garmin-stated wrist circumference | 135–200 mm | 110–175 mm |
| Weight with included silicone band | 47 g | 40 g |
| Quick-release band width | 22 mm | 18 mm |
These dimensions and ranges are Garmin specifications; they are not a universal sizing rule. A wrist near the overlap of the ranges can wear either model, so comfort, strap-hole position and how much screen you want should decide the final choice. The listed ranges also do not account for personal preferences such as wearing the watch loosely, over clothing or higher on the forearm.
What the 45 mm Venu 3 feels like
The Venu 3’s 45 mm diameter gives it a larger visual footprint and leaves more room for touch targets, text and workout data. Its 47 g listed weight is still moderate for an everyday smartwatch, but people with smaller wrists may notice the case when sleeping or bending the wrist. If the case extends beyond the flat top of your wrist, the watch can rock during exercise and its optical sensor may have a less consistent contact.

The Venu 3S trims the diameter to 41 mm and weight to 40 g. That can make it easier to sleep in and less likely to catch on sleeves. Garmin’s 110–175 mm range makes it the more natural starting point for smaller wrists, although the band and your preferred fit still matter more than a single millimeter measurement. The smaller case also means less physical space for the display, so information is presented on a more compact canvas.

Display size and readability
| Display specification | Venu 3 | Venu 3S |
|---|---|---|
| Diameter | 1.4 in / 35.4 mm | 1.2 in / 30.4 mm |
| Resolution | 454 × 454 pixels | 390 × 390 pixels |
The Venu 3’s 1.4-inch, 454 × 454-pixel panel provides more area for notifications, health graphs, workout fields and on-screen controls. This is useful if you read messages at arm’s length, use larger data fields during exercise or have difficulty selecting small touch targets. It does not automatically make every element physically larger; text size and the watch’s interface still determine readability.
The Venu 3S uses a 1.2-inch, 390 × 390-pixel display. It can show the same categories of information, but line breaks and dense screens have less room. If your priority is a discreet watch rather than maximum glanceable information, that compromise may be worthwhile. Try the smaller case in person if you frequently use maps, timers or multi-field workout screens.
Battery life by operating mode
Garmin’s current model-specific estimates show the clearest difference between the watches in ordinary smartwatch mode. The figures below are maximum estimates from Garmin’s specifications and owner’s manual, not guarantees for a particular user.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Operating mode | Venu 3 | Venu 3S |
|---|---|---|
| Smartwatch mode | Up to 14 days | Up to 10 days |
| Smartwatch mode with always-on display | Up to 5 days | Up to 5 days |
| Battery-saver smartwatch mode | Up to 26 days | Up to 20 days |
| GPS-only GNSS mode | Up to 26 hours | Up to 21 hours |
| All-systems GNSS mode | Up to 20 hours | Up to 15 hours |
| All-systems GNSS with music | Up to 11 hours | Up to 8 hours |
Garmin documents these values in the Venu 3 series owner’s manual. The relevant comparison is the row matching how you use the watch. A runner who records several hours of all-systems GNSS with music should not plan around the 14-day smartwatch figure, while a notification-focused user who leaves the display gesture-activated may be closer to the ordinary smartwatch estimate.

Why the normal-mode gap matters
In Garmin’s stated smartwatch estimates, Venu 3 offers four additional days over Venu 3S: 14 versus 10. That difference can mean one fewer charging session during a typical two-week period, depending on your settings. It is a meaningful advantage for travel, multi-day events and users who dislike charging every few days.
Why always-on use changes the answer
With always-on display enabled, Garmin lists up to five days for both models. The larger Venu 3 therefore does not provide a longer stated always-on runtime. If an always-visible time display is non-negotiable, select primarily by case comfort and screen size, then plan for charging at roughly the same manufacturer-rated interval for either model.
GPS and music are separate battery decisions
For satellite recording, Garmin rates the Venu 3 at up to 26 hours in GPS-only GNSS, 20 hours in all-systems GNSS and 11 hours with all-systems GNSS plus music. The Venu 3S is rated at up to 21, 15 and 8 hours respectively. All-systems tracking and local music are more demanding than a simple GPS-only activity, so match the estimate to the mode selected in your activity profile.
How to choose for your wrist and routine
Choose Venu 3 for a larger information surface
Venu 3 is the better fit when you want to read notifications without immediately reaching for your phone, prefer larger workout fields or use the touchscreen frequently. The 45 mm case and 1.4-inch display are also preferable if your eyesight makes compact text uncomfortable. Confirm that the 135–200 mm listed wrist range and 22 mm band proportion look balanced on your wrist before buying.

Choose Venu 3S for comfort and a lower profile
Venu 3S is the safer choice when a 45 mm watch feels visually oversized, interferes with a sleeve or becomes uncomfortable overnight. Its 41 mm case and 40 g listed weight reduce the physical presence without changing the series’ core battery modes. The tradeoff is the smaller 1.2-inch display and the shorter normal smartwatch estimate.
Choose based on charging tolerance
If you want the longest interval between charges and do not need always-on display, Venu 3 has the numerical advantage: up to 14 days versus up to 10. If both watches will be used with always-on display, that advantage disappears in Garmin’s estimates, so do not pay for a larger case solely for battery life.
Choose based on training mode
For occasional GPS walks, either model’s stated endurance is likely to be more than adequate for individual sessions. For long events, frequent all-systems GNSS recording or workouts with music, Venu 3 has the higher estimate in every listed satellite mode. The differences are five hours in GPS-only GNSS, five hours in all-systems GNSS and three hours in all-systems GNSS with music.

The models do not use the same band width. Venu 3 takes 22 mm quick-release bands; Venu 3S takes 18 mm bands. A replacement strap must match both the model’s width and its quick-release attachment. Do not assume a 22 mm Venu 3 band will fit the Venu 3S simply because both watches belong to the same series. Check the width printed in the listing or packaging before ordering.

Band width is also a visual proportion decision. A 22 mm strap gives the larger Venu 3 a balanced appearance, while an 18 mm strap keeps the Venu 3S from looking top-heavy. For exercise, prioritize a secure, adjustable fit that keeps the sensor in stable contact rather than choosing solely by color or material.
How to get closer to Garmin’s battery estimates
The published numbers assume a particular mix of settings. You can reduce avoidable drain by changing the features you do not need, but every saving involves a usability tradeoff.
- Decide whether always-on display is essential. If you can use the wrist gesture to wake the screen, disabling always-on display is the single clearest way to avoid the five-day ceiling Garmin lists for that mode.
- Review activity tracking and sensor settings. Continuous wrist heart-rate monitoring, pulse-ox readings and frequent health checks consume power. Keep the measurements that support your goals and turn off checks you do not use.
- Reduce unnecessary phone notifications. High notification volume wakes the display and increases vibration events. Limit alerts to people and apps that require an immediate response.
- Use the appropriate GNSS mode. GPS-only recording has a higher Garmin estimate than all-systems GNSS. Select all-systems tracking when its additional positioning capability is worth the extra drain, not by default for every short activity.
- Manage music during workouts. Local playback lowers the stated all-systems GNSS estimate to 11 hours on Venu 3 and 8 hours on Venu 3S. Bring a phone for audio when practical, or start with a full charge before a long event.
- Use battery-saver mode for low-demand periods. Garmin lists up to 26 days for Venu 3 and 20 days for Venu 3S in battery-saver smartwatch mode, but reduced functionality means it is better suited to travel or storage than everyday use.
- Charge before long GPS sessions. Manufacturer estimates are maxima. Starting an activity with a partial charge leaves less margin for cold temperatures, weak satellite conditions, repeated screen checks or connected sensors.
Garmin explicitly notes that enabled features, activity tracking, wrist-based heart rate, phone notifications, GPS and connected sensors affect battery life. Treat the estimates as a planning baseline, then adjust after observing your own settings.
Regional listings, dates and what can change
The Venu 3 specification page linked above is Garmin’s US listing, while the Venu 3S page is a Garmin UK listing. Case measurements and mode estimates are presented for the series, but color options, bundled accessories, stock and local software availability can vary by region. Check the listing for your country before ordering.
Garmin introduced the Venu 3 series in a 2023 launch release as two sizes. In that release, Garmin Vice President of Global Consumer Sales Dan Bartel said, “No matter what your health and fitness journey looks like, Venu 3 is ready to support you every step of the way.” That is a Garmin product statement, not an independent performance assessment. Current model pages and the owner’s manual should take precedence over launch-era wording when the two differ.
Prices and availability are not fixed specifications and are not included here. Software updates, display settings and battery condition can also change practical endurance over time, so verify the current regional listing and manual when you purchase.
Quick Recap
A practical buying checklist
- Measure your wrist circumference and compare it with Garmin’s 135–200 mm Venu 3 and 110–175 mm Venu 3S ranges.
- Decide whether a 1.4-inch display is worth the larger 45 mm case, or whether the 1.2-inch Venu 3S screen is sufficient.
- Choose normal smartwatch battery priority: up to 14 days for Venu 3 versus up to 10 days for Venu 3S.
- If you require always-on display, use the same up-to-five-day estimate for both and decide on comfort and readability instead.
- For satellite workouts, compare the exact mode you use: GPS-only, all-systems GNSS, or all-systems GNSS with music.
- Buy replacement bands in the correct width: 22 mm for Venu 3 or 18 mm for Venu 3S.
- Check your country’s Garmin listing for current stock, colors, included accessories and software-dependent features.
