The Garmin Forerunner 955 is a multisport training watch with built-in maps, multi-band GPS, music storage and training tools. Its transflective MIP screen is a key distinction from the Forerunner 965’s AMOLED display. Garmin lists up to 15 days of smartwatch battery life for the 955, but that is a manufacturer maximum, not a measured everyday result.

This is a specifications-based buying guide, not a hands-on test. Garmin’s official comparison and support pages describe the feature set and software; they do not establish independent GPS accuracy, comfort, real-world battery life, current price or stock.

What the Forerunner 955 offers

Garmin positions the Forerunner 955 for runners and triathletes who want training data and navigation in one watch. Garmin’s current comparison lists built-in mapping, multi-band GPS, music storage, training readiness and training status. It also lists touchscreen operation, Garmin Pay and Pulse Ox.

The Forerunner 955 is a feature-rich option within Garmin’s running-watch range. One useful boundary is the Forerunner 255: Garmin’s comparison lists the 255 without built-in mapping, music storage or training readiness, while the 955 includes those features. These are listed feature differences, not a judgment about which watch offers better value.

Forerunner 955 vs. 965: what changes?

Garmin’s comparison shows many of the headline running and multisport capabilities on both the 955 and 965. The clearest documented differences are the display technology and Garmin’s stated smartwatch-mode battery maximums.

Display Transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP) AMOLED
Smartwatch battery life Up to 15 days Up to 23 days

Battery figures are Garmin’s stated maximums, not results from a controlled comparison or a guarantee of typical use. Garmin’s comparison also lists the 955 Solar separately at up to 15 days in smartwatch mode, or up to 20 days with solar; those are manufacturer figures as well. The figures and feature listings are on Garmin’s Forerunner 955 and 965 comparison.

Which screen suits your preference?

The 955’s transflective MIP display and the 965’s AMOLED display are the most direct choice point in Garmin’s comparison. If screen technology is central to your decision, compare the two in person where possible; the specification alone does not establish which will suit your viewing preferences.

How to weigh the battery claims

Garmin lists the 965’s maximum smartwatch battery life as longer than the 955’s, but these published figures are not evidence of how long either watch will last with your mix of GPS, music, display settings and other features. Consider them manufacturer estimates rather than a head-to-head real-world result.

Does the 955 still cover the functions you need?

For someone who specifically wants built-in mapping and training readiness, Garmin lists both on the 955. Garmin’s comparison also lists those functions on the 965, so the feature list does not by itself make the 965 a necessary upgrade. Check current local prices before choosing: the official comparison does not establish which model is the better value in your market.

Display, storage and water rating

Garmin’s owner’s manual specifies a rechargeable built-in lithium-ion battery, media storage up to 32 GB (approximately 2,000 songs) and an operating temperature range of -20°C to 60°C. Storage capacity is a specification; it does not guarantee a particular usable song count across music files and services.

Accessories and data requirements

Garmin’s owner’s manual notes that some data requires an optional accessory and directs owners to Garmin or a Garmin dealer for accessories and replacement parts. Confirm the exact compatibility of any sensor, strap or replacement item with the Forerunner 955 before buying; the manual reference alone does not establish compatibility for a particular model.

Who should consider the Forerunner 955?

  • Consider it if built-in mapping, multi-band GPS, music storage and training tools match your running or triathlon needs, and you prefer the MIP display.
  • Compare it closely with the 965 if you prefer an AMOLED screen or put weight on Garmin’s higher stated smartwatch battery maximum for that model.
  • Check the 255 as well if you do not need mapping, music storage or training readiness; Garmin’s comparison lists those features on the 955 but not the 255.

Garmin’s specifications and software support make the 955’s capabilities clear, but they cannot answer whether it feels comfortable, tracks accurately for your use or meets your battery expectations. Those questions require independent testing or a chance to try the watch yourself.
