Garmin Beta 18.29 is rolling out to six watches: Forerunner 70, Forerunner 170, Forerunner 570, Forerunner 970, Venu X1 and vívoactive 6. The maintenance release fixes alarm quiet-start behavior across the group. On four supported variants, it also prevents voice alerts from playing when silent mode is enabled.

What Garmin Beta 18.29 changes

Alarm quiet starts are fixed on all six models

The primary correction addresses alarms that did not honor a quiet start. Garmin’s quiet-start setting is intended to let an alarm begin without an audible alert, but the behavior was unreliable. The fix applies to the Forerunner 70, Forerunner 170, Forerunner 570, Forerunner 970, Venu X1 and vívoactive 6.

Silent-mode voice alerts are corrected on selected watches

Beta 18.29 also changes how voice alerts behave while the watch is in silent mode. The improvement is reported for the Forerunner 570, Forerunner 970, Venu X1 and Forerunner 170 Music. Voice prompts should no longer sound in silent mode on those models.

The change is not available on the Forerunner 70, vívoactive 6 or the non-Wi-Fi Forerunner 170. A Forerunner 170 owner therefore needs to identify whether the watch is the Music/Wi-Fi variant before expecting this particular fix.

Other fixes are not itemized

Garmin describes the release as including multiple fixes for other “minor issues,” but neither Garmin nor the reported rollout provides a complete bug list. Those unspecified corrections should not be treated as confirmed fixes for any particular symptom.

Eligible watches at a glance

Watch Beta 18.29 eligibility Silent-mode voice-alert suppression Important qualification
Forerunner 70 Yes No Receives the alarm quiet-start fix only among the changes described here.
Forerunner 170 Yes Music/Wi-Fi model only The non-Wi-Fi version does not receive the voice-alert behavior change.
Forerunner 570 Yes Yes Receives both documented behavior fixes.
Forerunner 970 Yes Yes The Garmin Forerunner 970 smartwatch is included in this maintenance rollout.
Venu X1 Yes Yes Receives both documented behavior fixes.
vívoactive 6 Yes No Receives the alarm quiet-start fix; voice alerts remain outside this change.

Why voice alerts may still sound in silent mode

Silent mode does not guarantee the same behavior on every Garmin model. Beta 18.29 changes voice-alert handling only on the Forerunner 570, Forerunner 970, Venu X1 and Forerunner 170 Music. If you use a Forerunner 70, vívoactive 6 or non-Wi-Fi Forerunner 170, continued voice prompts are consistent with the documented model limitation rather than evidence that the update failed.

  1. Automatic device updates: Enable automatic updates in the watch’s system/software settings. When Garmin makes Beta 18.29 available to your device, it can download and install during an eligible charging or sync period.
  2. Garmin Connect: Pair the watch with the Garmin Connect mobile app, sync it, and allow the app to deliver any offered software update. Keep Bluetooth enabled and the watch near the phone until the installation completes.
  3. Garmin Express: Connect the watch to a computer running Garmin Express, select the device, and install the software package shown for it. Do not disconnect the watch while the update is being transferred or applied.

After installation, check the watch’s software-information screen and test the setting that matters to you: create a quiet-start alarm, enable silent mode, and trigger a supported voice-alert scenario. A missing update prompt usually means the rollout has not reached that device yet, the watch is not one of the six listed models, or the installed variant is excluded from a model-specific change.

How this differs from Garmin’s larger 2026 feature release

Garmin’s February 24, 2026 newsroom announcement described a broader software release for compatible devices including the Forerunner 970, Forerunner 570, Venu X1 and vívoactive 6, as well as other watches. That release introduced capabilities such as expanded gear tracking, gear collections and a gear database, course planning, live sports scores, Garmin Fitness Coach, mixed-session activity tracking, Varia voice alerts, sleep alignment and lifestyle logging.

  • Navigate confidently with a 3-axis compass, barometric altimeter and multi-band GPS with SatIQ technology, which delivers superior positioning while also optimizing battery life

Those capabilities are separate from the narrower Beta 18.29 maintenance update. A watch can be eligible for the feature release yet receive individual fixes at a different time, and feature availability can vary by model and connectivity. Garmin said on February 24 that compatible devices had started receiving the free software updates; the Beta 18.29 report was published September 4, 2026 and updated October 5, 2026.

What about Venu 4?

Venu 4 was not included in the reported Beta 18.29 rollout. At the time of the October 5 update, it remained on Beta 18.27. That status does not establish whether a later Venu 4 release will contain the same fixes, so owners should rely on the version offered through Garmin’s official update channels rather than assume parity with the six eligible watches.
