Choose the Garmin Approach S72 if you want its added swing and post-round analysis, range tracking, or newer everyday-watch hardware—and will use the features that may require a Garmin Golf membership. Choose the Approach S70 if its established golf tools already cover what you need and its current local price is meaningfully lower. The S72 is a specification upgrade, not a proven improvement in accuracy or scores: it was announced on October 6, 2026, and launch coverage had not independently tested it.

What is the main difference between the Approach S72 and S70?

The S72 adds a stronger emphasis on golf practice and analysis. Garmin lists swing metrics such as hand speed, backswing length, and wrist rotation, a driving-range activity, and post-round biometric review. It also adds a speaker and microphone for calls when paired with a smartphone, voice controls, a built-in flashlight, and upgraded case materials.

The S70 already offers a substantial golf feature set, including course mapping, virtual caddie, PlaysLike distance, scorekeeping, and green view. If those are the features you use, the S72’s headline additions may not justify paying more. Garmin’s U.S. announcement describes the S72 launch features; the S70 product listing outlines the older watch’s baseline. Availability and feature details can vary by market.

Which watch has the better golf features?

Approach S72: swing feedback and round review

Garmin says the S72 can show hand speed, backswing length, wrist rotation, and other swing metrics during range practice and after a round. Its driving-range activity is intended to make practice more structured, while post-round biometric review lets golfers examine how heart rate relates to their performance. These are the most relevant reasons for a serious S70 owner to consider upgrading.

Garmin Approach® S72, Advanced Golf Smartwatch, 47mm, Black
  • Premium golf smartwatch features a lightweight titanium bezel, durable sapphire lens, ComfortFit fabric band, built-in flashlight, speaker and microphone
  • Preloaded with 43,000+ full-color CourseView maps; option to get an enhanced view of the shot ahead with aerial imagery (requires a Garmin Golf membership)
  • Up to 16 days in smartwatch mode and 20 hours of battery life in golf activity mode, so you can play round after round
  • Look back on your round to see how heart rate affected your performance and start to see trends in how your biometric data and score relate (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
  • Gain a better understanding of your swing during your range session and after your round with swing metrics, which include hand speed, backswing length, wrist rotation and more

Those features are not evidence that the S72 will improve a golfer’s scores. No cited independent source had tested the new watch in the announcement coverage, so claims about its accuracy, comfort, battery performance, or effect on play remain unproven.

Approach S70: strong fundamentals without the S72’s listed swing metrics

The S70 already includes course mapping, virtual caddie, PlaysLike distance, scorekeeping, and green view. Garmin’s regional S72 product page describes green contour, aerial imagery, and putting analysis for the newer model, while Garmin’s golf-watch comparison page provides a regional view of the S70 lineup. Compare the exact features available on your course and in your market rather than assuming every regional listing is identical.

  • Improved virtual caddie feature shows your shot dispersion data and suggests a club based on a variety of factors, including your historical swing data, elevation, wind speed, wind direction and more

Do the S72’s green-reading and putting features require a membership?

Some do. Garmin says the S72’s green reading uses contour data on select courses and requires an active Garmin Golf membership. Its product page also lists membership as a condition for green contour, aerial imagery, and putting analysis. Course support and membership terms can affect whether these features are useful to you; confirm both for your region and home courses before treating them as a reason to upgrade.

How do size, materials, and everyday features compare?

Feature Approach S72 Approach S70
Case sizes 43 mm and 47 mm, according to Garmin’s launch announcement. 42 mm and 47 mm, according to Garmin’s product listing.
Reported weight 41 g (43 mm) and 48 g (47 mm), per Endurance Wire’s October 2026 secondary comparison; confirm the exact SKU and included band. 44 g (42 mm) and 56 g (47 mm), per the same secondary comparison; confirm the exact SKU and included band.
Bezel and lens Titanium bezel and sapphire lens, per Garmin’s announcement. Ceramic bezel and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 lens, per Garmin’s product listing.
Band ComfortFit fabric band, per Garmin’s announcement. Not stated in the cited Garmin product listing.
Calls and controls Speaker and microphone for calls when paired with a smartphone; voice controls are listed for the S72. Not stated in the cited S70 product information.
Flashlight Built-in flashlight, per Garmin’s announcement. Not stated in the cited S70 product information.
Memory TechRadar reported four times the memory of the S70; this is a secondary report, not a figure in the cited Garmin announcement. Baseline for TechRadar’s reported comparison; capacity not stated in the cited Garmin listing.

The smaller S72 is 43 mm, not 42 mm; compare the actual case and band dimensions rather than assuming the smaller versions fit identically. The lighter weights above come from a secondary comparison, not a Garmin specification cited here. A titanium bezel and sapphire lens are material changes, but they do not by themselves prove better real-world durability.

How does battery life compare?

Garmin’s U.S. S72 launch announcement estimates up to 20 hours of on-course use and up to 16 days with GPS off for the larger model. Garmin lists the 47 mm S70 at up to 20 hours in GPS mode and up to 16 days in smartwatch mode. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent measurements; the modes and wording differ, so compare the same case size, settings, and activity before drawing conclusions.

Garmin’s Singapore S72 page displays a different smartwatch-mode battery claim from the U.S. announcement. Treat the figure as regional rather than blending the two listings into a single global specification, and check the local product page for the model you plan to buy.

What do the S72 and S70 cost?

Garmin announced a U.S. suggested retail price starting at $799.99 for the S72 in October 2026. That is a launch MSRP, not a live retailer price. Endurance Wire’s October 2026 comparison reports a historical S70 launch price of $549; that figure is not the S70’s verified current price. Check local listings for both watches before making a value decision, and factor in any membership cost applicable to features you plan to use.

Which watch should you choose?

Choose the S72 if you will use its additions

  • You want the listed swing metrics and range-practice activity.
  • You expect to review biometric data alongside your rounds.
  • You want the S72’s speaker and microphone, voice controls, flashlight, or updated materials for everyday use.
  • Your courses support the membership-dependent green and putting features you care about, and the membership terms work for you.

Choose the S70 if its golf toolkit is enough

  • Course mapping, virtual caddie, PlaysLike distance, scorekeeping, and green view cover your needs.
  • You do not expect to use the S72’s swing, range, or post-round analysis.
  • The S70 is substantially less expensive where you shop, making its existing feature set the better fit for your budget.

What is established—and what is not?

The S72 is Garmin’s new flagship golf smartwatch, announced October 6, 2026, in 43 mm and 47 mm sizes. Its added golf-analysis functions and everyday hardware are published specifications and launch claims. They do not establish that it is more accurate, more comfortable, longer-lasting in real use, more durable, or more effective at lowering scores than the S70.
