Short answer: Gallium nitride (GaN) can let a USB-C charger’s switching stage operate at higher frequencies, which may reduce the size of magnetic components and enable compact high-power designs. It does not guarantee that every GaN charger is smaller, cooler, more efficient, or faster than every silicon charger. The result depends on the complete circuit, enclosure, cooling design, USB Power Delivery (PD) profiles, cable, connected device, and—on multiport models—how power is shared.

At the same negotiated output, a device will not charge faster merely because the charger uses GaN. USB PD negotiation determines what power is available, and the device takes only what it is designed to accept. Choose by the charger’s supported profiles, port-sharing rules, safety evidence, dimensions, and warranty rather than by the GaN label alone.

What is the difference between GaN and silicon chargers?

GaN and silicon are semiconductor materials used in the charger’s power-conversion switching stage. A wall charger first converts AC from the outlet to regulated DC, then uses high-speed switching, transformers or inductors, capacitors, control electronics, and protection circuits to deliver the voltage and current requested over USB-C.

What GaN changes

Gallium nitride devices can switch at higher frequencies and with different loss characteristics than conventional silicon power transistors. Higher frequency can allow designers to use smaller transformers, inductors, and some filtering components for a given design target. That creates room for a smaller enclosure or for more output power in a similarly sized enclosure.

Those are design possibilities, not a guarantee about a finished product. A manufacturer may use the saved space for additional ports, larger thermal components, more filtering, or simply a different case shape. Two chargers with the same GaN switch can therefore have very different dimensions, weights, temperatures, and electrical behavior.

What silicon means

Silicon switching components remain common and can be engineered into safe, efficient USB-C chargers. A well-designed silicon charger may outperform a poorly designed GaN model on temperature, efficiency, noise, durability, or size. The material is one part of the power stage; magnetics, semiconductor selection, firmware, layout, cooling, and quality control determine the product you actually use.

Why the label is not a performance specification

“GaN” identifies a component technology, not a USB-C charging standard or a guaranteed output profile. A GaN charger can still lack the voltage, current, or Programmable Power Supply (PPS) mode your phone or laptop needs. Conversely, a silicon charger with the right profile can charge a particular device just as quickly.

Are GaN chargers smaller?

GaN makes a smaller design possible because higher-frequency switching can reduce the size of supporting magnetic components. The finished charger’s dimensions still depend on output rating, number of ports, safety clearances, thermal paths, folding or fixed prongs, and the plug region for which it was made.

How to make a fair size comparison

Compare chargers at the same maximum wattage and with the same port count. Measure or verify height, width, depth, and weight with the same plug arrangement. A compact single-port 65 W model is not a fair comparison with a 100 W multiport charger that includes extra circuitry and a larger heat sink.

Regional versions can also differ. A charger with folding US prongs may have different dimensions from a version with a permanently attached UK, EU, or Australian plug. Confirm the exact model number and region before treating a listed measurement as applicable to the unit you can buy.

A 65 W example, not a category average

One official UGREEN listing describes a 65 W GaN charger in its Nexode Air family. A separate official 65 W listing gives approximate dimensions of 53 × 50.9 × 50.4 mm and USB-C output profiles up to 20 V/3.25 A, with PPS support. Those figures describe the specific listed model and should not be combined across regional SKUs or treated as a typical measurement for all GaN or silicon chargers.

No controlled, same-wattage independent test in the available evidence establishes a universal percentage by which GaN chargers are smaller than silicon chargers. Use the published dimensions for the exact model instead.

Do GaN chargers get hot?

Every mains charger produces some heat. Switching losses, conduction losses, transformer losses, rectification, standby consumption, and heat trapped by the enclosure all contribute. Exterior temperature also changes with output load, room temperature, airflow, orientation, and how long the charger has been operating.

Why GaN may help thermally

GaN switching can reduce certain losses and can support a more compact power stage. Less loss can mean less heat to remove, while a smaller design can shorten electrical paths. Whether that produces a cooler case depends on the complete design. A manufacturer may use the compact layout to raise power density, leaving the case temperature similar to a larger charger.

Why a small charger can feel hot

  • High continuous load: Charging a laptop or other high-power device keeps the converter near its rated output for longer than topping up a phone.
  • Limited surface area: A small enclosure has less area to spread heat.
  • Warm surroundings: A charger behind furniture, in direct sun, or beside another heat source cannot shed heat as effectively.
  • Port sharing: Multiport circuitry can create additional losses while reallocating power.
  • Short-term peaks: A charger may briefly deliver high power before its thermal control reduces output.

UGREEN’s product language says its GaN charger provides “higher energy efficiency, lower temperature operation and strong output power in a mini lightweight size.” That is a manufacturer product claim, not a controlled GaN-versus-silicon measurement. Treat it as a design objective unless an independent test reports matched loads, ambient conditions, measurement points, and run time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What temperature behavior is acceptable?

Warm is normal during high-power operation. A case that becomes painful to touch, repeatedly stops and resumes, emits an odor, makes unusual noises, or shows physical damage should be unplugged and replaced. Do not cover a charger or use it where ventilation is blocked. The absence of a published comparative temperature test means you should not infer that a GaN model is automatically safer to touch than a silicon model.

Does a GaN charger charge faster?

Not by itself. Charging speed is set by the power contract negotiated among the charger, device, cable, and selected port. USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) describes USB Power Delivery as allowing a device to “take only the power it requires.” A charger can advertise a high maximum while a phone, tablet, or laptop requests much less.

How USB PD negotiation works

  1. Connection detection: The USB-C source and sink identify one another through the USB-C connection.
  2. Capability exchange: The charger advertises its available voltage and current combinations, and the device reports what it can use.
  3. Request and approval: The device requests a supported operating point; the charger accepts it if the port and protection system can provide it.
  4. Power delivery: The charger supplies the negotiated level. The device can later request a different level as its battery-management system changes charging stages.

If any link lacks the required mode, the system falls back to a lower level or may not charge at the expected rate. A 65 W GaN charger and a 65 W silicon charger with identical PD capabilities can therefore deliver the same charging time to the same device.

Profiles and PPS matter more than the material

Check the exact output table for fixed PD voltage/current profiles and, where relevant, PPS ranges. PPS lets a compatible device request smaller voltage adjustments rather than using only fixed steps. Some phones rely on PPS for their highest advertised charging rate; a charger that lacks it may still charge, but more slowly.

USB-IF describes USB Power Delivery specifications with power levels up to 240 W in the expanded PD 3.1 range. “Up to 240 W” is a capability of the standard, not a promise that a particular charger, cable, port, or device supports 240 W. USB-IF’s document library lists USB PD Revision 3.2 Version 1.2 dated 2026-09-14; that standards revision does not certify any commercial charger.

The cable is part of the charging system

Use a cable rated for the current and power you intend to draw. A cable with lower capability can limit negotiation, and a damaged or unusually long cable can add resistance and heat. Check the cable’s marked rating and the device manufacturer’s requirements rather than assuming every USB-C cable supports the charger’s maximum output.

How multiport GaN chargers divide power

A headline such as “100 W” or “140 W” generally describes the charger’s total available output under specified conditions. It does not mean every port can provide that number simultaneously. When two or more devices are connected, the charger may assign fixed amounts, prioritize one port, or dynamically redistribute power.

Read the port-sharing table

  • Maximum output from each USB-C port when used alone.
  • Combined output when multiple USB-C ports are active.
  • Whether USB-A ports reduce USB-C power or have a separate limit.
  • Which port has priority when a laptop and phone are connected.
  • Whether PPS remains available when another port is in use.

USB-IF describes system-level power allocation, but the actual allocation rules are model-specific. If a laptop stops charging rapidly after a phone is plugged in, the charger may have moved to a shared-power mode rather than malfunctioned.

GaN versus silicon: the comparison that matters

Comparison point What the evidence supports What to verify on the exact charger
Switching material GaN can support higher-frequency switching; silicon is a conventional alternative. Do not treat the material name as a complete efficiency or temperature specification.
Physical size GaN can enable smaller supporting components. Compare published dimensions and weight at the same wattage, port count, and plug region.
Heat Thermal behavior depends on load, ambient conditions, enclosure, and heat dissipation. Look for credible independent measurements at matched loads; none are established here.
Charging speed Equal negotiated output produces the same available power regardless of material. Check PD profiles, PPS, cable rating, and the device’s input limit.
Multiport use Available power can be divided among active ports. Read the one-port and combined-output table.
Safety Safety comes from the complete design and protections, not the semiconductor label. Check compliance information, over-current/over-voltage/over-temperature protections, warranty, and seller authenticity.
Value No universal price or performance premium is established by the material alone. Compare the features you need rather than paying solely for a GaN logo.

How to choose the right USB-C charger

  1. List the devices you will charge together. Record each device’s maximum USB-C input, including whether it needs PPS. For a laptop, use the manufacturer’s recommended wattage as the starting point.
  2. Choose the required single-port wattage. If a laptop needs 65 W by itself, a 65 W total multiport model may leave no reserve for a phone. Select a higher total rating when simultaneous charging matters.
  3. Match the output profiles. Confirm the exact voltage/current combinations and PPS range. “USB-C” and “GaN” do not tell you which profiles are present.
  4. Check sharing behavior. Read the manufacturer’s table for every combination of ports you expect to use. Do not assume the headline wattage is available to each device at once.
  5. Confirm cable capability. Use a cable rated for the intended current and power, with a connector and length suitable for your setup.
  6. Compare size fairly. Use dimensions and weight for the same region, plug style, wattage, and port count. A smaller case may run warmer if it has less surface area.
  7. Evaluate safety and support. Look for clear electrical ratings, protection features, compliance or certification evidence relevant to your region, a usable warranty, and a reputable seller.
  8. Consider portability. Folding prongs, detachable cables, and a compact shape may matter more in a travel bag than a small difference in switching technology.

What the 65 W GaN category tells you

A 65 W USB-C charger is a practical class for many phones, tablets, handheld devices, and some laptops. The UGREEN Nexode Air example illustrates why the specification sheet matters more than the word GaN.

Listed characteristic Example specification Qualification
Technology GaN Manufacturer’s product description.
Maximum USB-C output 65 W Manufacturer model specification, not an independent measurement.
USB-C profile Up to 20 V/3.25 A Applies to the cited 65 W listing; verify the regional SKU.
PPS Supported on the cited listing Confirm that the exact model and port retain PPS in multiport use.
Approximate dimensions 53 × 50.9 × 50.4 mm Official measurement for one listed model; not a GaN-versus-silicon statistic.

Use this kind of listing to check whether a charger fits your devices and bag. Do not assume another charger in the same family has identical dimensions, plug geometry, port allocation, or regional availability.

Limitations of claims about GaN advantages

Claims that GaN chargers are “smaller,” “cooler,” or “more efficient” can be directionally plausible because of the material’s switching characteristics, but those adjectives need defined test conditions. A useful comparison would hold output wattage, input voltage, ambient temperature, enclosure orientation, cable, load profile, and measurement method constant, then report dimensions, weight, efficiency, and case temperatures for both technologies.

No such matched independent bench result is established for the chargers discussed here. That means there is no supported comparative statistic stating how many percent smaller, cooler, more efficient, or faster GaN chargers are than equivalent silicon models. Product-page language should be read as a claim about that model, not as a universal result.

Troubleshooting charging and heat problems

The device charges, but slowly

  • Check that the charger port is the one with the required wattage and PPS support.
  • Confirm the device’s maximum input and whether it requires a proprietary mode beyond standard USB PD.
  • Try a cable with the required power rating.
  • Disconnect other devices to test whether port sharing reduced the available output.
  • Inspect the charger’s output table for the profile the device requested.

The charger becomes very warm

  • Reduce the load temporarily and place the charger in open air.
  • Remove it from power strips, cushions, or enclosed spaces that retain heat.
  • Check whether several ports are active and whether the charger is near its maximum total output.
  • Stop using it if it is painfully hot, smells burnt, makes abnormal sounds, or shows damage.

The laptop stops charging when another device is connected

Check the combined-output row in the port-sharing table. The charger may intentionally reallocate power. Use a higher-total-output model or connect the laptop to the priority port if the table specifies one.

The charger and device repeatedly connect and disconnect

Try another known-good cable and outlet, then test with only one device attached. Persistent cycling can indicate an incompatible profile, damaged cable, overheating protection, faulty outlet, or a defective charger. Replace the charger if the behavior continues after those checks.

Bottom line: should you buy GaN or silicon?

Choose GaN when a compact, high-power design is valuable and the specific model offers the PD/PPS profiles, port allocation, safety information, and warranty your devices require. Choose a silicon charger when it better matches your budget, dimensions, availability, or documented specifications. GaN can be an enabling technology for smaller power supplies, but USB-C charging performance is determined by the negotiated power system and the charger’s complete engineering—not by the material name printed on the box.
