To make GAN effects fail in CI instead of on customers’ low-end phones, separate fast correctness checks from physical-device performance tests. Benchmark the built effect on representative Android hardware, record the model and test conditions with every result, and block releases only against limits your product has defined. There is no evidence-based universal latency or frame-rate threshold for every GAN effect.
What CI should catch
A passing build proves neither that an effect performs acceptably on a low-end phone nor that its output remains useful. Treat these as separate questions: does the effect behave correctly, and does it meet the product’s performance and quality requirements on supported devices?
- Behavior: Does the effect produce acceptable output for representative inputs?
- Performance: Does it run within the product’s defined limits on the target hardware and software?
- Reproducibility: Can the team identify the model, device, execution path, and measurement conditions behind a regression?
Android’s guidance emphasizes that benchmark timing belongs to the device on which it was measured; it is not automatically a universal pass/fail value. Results need to be interpreted in context and over time. Android’s CI benchmarking guidance explains the approach.

Run quick, deterministic checks on each change
Keep compilation, lint or style checks, host-side tests, and deterministic effect-contract tests in the normal build pipeline. For the effect contract, use fixed inputs and a model-owned oracle or comparator to detect unacceptable output changes. Include checks relevant to the effect’s task; a fast runtime does not prove that the generated result is still good.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Android’s CI automation overview describes build, lint/style, and host-side tests as basic CI jobs. Keep these checks quick enough to give developers useful feedback on each change.
Run realistic performance coverage on physical devices
Measure the built effect on named physical Android devices representative of the low-end devices the product supports. Android strongly discourages using emulator benchmark results as evidence of user experience: an emulator reflects its host computer’s hardware and operating system, not the target phone. A device farm is one option for running tests on real devices; the same Android guidance discusses CI device testing.

Broad instrumented performance suites can take a long time. Keep any per-change device cohort narrow and targeted, then use scheduled or maintenance builds for broader device and user-journey coverage. Android’s CI automation guidance describes scheduled maintenance builds as an option when high-coverage suites are expensive to run.
Choose a device strategy that matches your supported cohort
| Approach | What it offers | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Team-managed physical device pool | Direct control over the specific device cohort and test scheduling. | Device selection, upkeep, availability, and coverage are the team’s responsibility. |
| Device farm | Access to real devices for CI testing without maintaining every test device directly. | Check that the service offers the low-end device cohort you need, and account for queues, repeatability, coverage, and service terms. Pricing is not established by the sources cited here. |
Choose phones based on the product’s minimum supported OS, memory, graphics or other accelerator profile, and runtime—not on a supposedly universal “budget phone.” The appropriate cohort depends on the devices your app actually supports.

Make each benchmark reproducible
A timing number without its workload and environment is difficult to act on. Preserve a benchmark record for every run. NVIDIA’s model validation and benchmarking guidance includes performance results alongside task quality; its record-keeping approach is useful here, but it is not a GAN-specific mobile standard.
- Model and configuration: model revision or checksum, configuration, and relevant preprocessing or postprocessing settings.
- Device and software cohort: device identity or class, OS/build, runtime version, and accelerator path.
- Workload: fixed input or input set, effect interaction, warmup procedure, and repeat count.
- Measurement: the exact timing boundary, individual and aggregate results, and any relevant resource measurements.
- Quality: the result of the task-specific output check for the same model and workload.
State exactly what the timing covers. For example, decide whether the measurement includes only model inference or the larger effect path, such as preprocessing and postprocessing. The choice should reflect the user-facing interaction the product needs to protect, and it must stay consistent when comparing runs.

Set release gates from product requirements
Do not copy a latency, frame-time, frame-rate, memory, or energy limit from an unrelated model or device. The available guidance does not establish a generally valid GAN-effects threshold. Define limits from the effect’s interaction, supported low-end hardware, and acceptable output quality; document the rationale in the repository.

For a live camera effect, the user-facing requirement may center on responsiveness during continuous processing. For a generated still image, the relevant experience may instead be the wait for a completed result. These are different workloads and should not be forced into one benchmark or one gate.

Pair the performance budget with an output-quality gate. NVIDIA’s validation guidance distinguishes task correctness from target compatibility and performance, and includes task quality with benchmark results. A speed improvement should not pass if the effect’s output has degraded beyond the product’s accepted range.
Keep noisy measurements from becoming flaky blockers
Physical-device timings vary, so a single slow result should not automatically be treated as a meaningful regression. Android describes rolling-window step fitting as a way to use historical results and reduce false positives caused by an isolated slow build. Apply a comparison method that fits your pipeline, and inspect trends against the same device and workload rather than mixing unlike measurements.
A pull-request dry run can confirm that a microbenchmark launches and completes. A one-loop dry run is a smoke check, not robust performance evidence. Use repeated measurements for a decision-making benchmark, and use scheduled runs to broaden coverage without making every change wait on a large device matrix.

NIST describes a GAN as a neural network designed to create examples that reproduce a target distribution. Its 2021 study examined simulated low-dimensional settings and reported tail underfilling and bridge bias; it does not establish mobile runtime behavior or a performance threshold for visual effects. NIST’s publication record identifies the study and its scope.
Google AI Edge describes on-device machine-learning tooling, custom model deployment, hardware-accelerated runtimes, and benchmarking across real Android devices. That is relevant tooling context, not proof that a particular GAN effect is supported or that it meets a specific CI limit. See Google AI Edge.
