Router settings can reduce gaming ping spikes when the cause is congestion inside your home network, but the available evidence does not establish which three settings were disabled in the claimed test or verify that doing so cut jitter in half. The practical first step is to find out whether spikes happen over Wi-Fi, during heavy downloads or uploads, or in both situations.
What can make gaming ping spike?
Jitter is variation in latency: your packets do not all arrive with the same delay. Two different problems can contribute to it, and they call for different fixes.
Queueing when the connection is busy
When downloads or uploads fill a connection’s bottleneck, packets may wait in queues, adding latency. OpenWrt describes this as bufferbloat and notes that it is most evident when a connection is heavily loaded. That extra delay can disrupt online gaming. OpenWrt’s SQM guide explains the issue and the tools used to manage it.

Wi-Fi is a separate part of the path from your router to your device. In its router tests, RTINGS found Ethernet connections had lower and more stable latency than Wi-Fi. A wired test can help determine whether the wireless hop is contributing to your symptoms; it does not prove that Wi-Fi is the cause in every home. RTINGS’ router latency testing describes its findings and the situational nature of router improvements.

Which fixes match the likely cause?
| Option | What it addresses | When it may help | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ethernet | The local wireless link between your device and router | When Wi-Fi is contributing to latency variation; compare wired and wireless play under similar conditions | It will not fix ISP-side congestion or routing delays beyond your home network |
| SQM | Queueing and latency under load at a managed bottleneck | When spikes coincide with heavy downloads or uploads | It uses router CPU, and insufficient hardware may not maintain full connection bandwidth; it can reduce peak throughput |
| QoS | Priority for selected activities or devices during congestion | When gaming traffic competes with other traffic on a constrained connection | It does not control every source of delay between your home and the game server |
RTINGS reported that nine of 11 routers in its 2025 test sample improved latency issues under congestion when QoS was enabled. That is a result from those tested routers and conditions, not a guarantee for every router or network.
Should you enable SQM or QoS?
They are related but not interchangeable terms. SQM (Smart Queue Management) manages queues and traffic rates to reduce latency under load; QoS (Quality of Service) commonly prioritizes selected activity or devices. Both matter only when traffic is competing for limited capacity at a bottleneck they can manage.

Implementation details vary by router. For example, GL.iNet Router Docs 4 describes QoS as assigning priorities and SQM as selecting a queueing rule in its interface; that implementation does not allow the two to be enabled simultaneously. Do not assume the same restriction applies to other brands or firmware. Check your router’s documentation before changing settings. GL.iNet’s SQM documentation covers its controls and limitations, while its QoS documentation explains its priority controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGL.iNet advises that its SQM feature is best suited to low-bandwidth or congested networks and may reduce peak throughput on high-speed connections. OpenWrt also cautions that SQM consumes CPU, so slower router hardware may be unable to sustain the full connection speed while managing traffic. These are reasons to measure performance before and after a change, rather than enabling features by name alone.

How to narrow down the cause of your spikes
- Compare wired and Wi-Fi play. If practical, connect the gaming device to the router with Ethernet and repeat the same kind of session. Keep other conditions as similar as possible. A difference points toward the local wireless link as a possibility, not proof of a universal cause.
- Check whether spikes track household traffic. Note whether latency worsens during large downloads, cloud uploads, or other sustained traffic. A consistent relationship makes congestion-related queueing more plausible.
- Test one relevant setting at a time. If your router offers SQM or QoS, consult its documentation, change one setting, and compare latency and throughput under similar conditions. Record the original configuration so you can restore it.
- Keep the game-server path in mind. If spikes persist on Ethernet and do not track household traffic, a home-router setting may not be the cause. These measures do not establish or fix every delay along the route to a game server.
Is the claimed 50% reduction verified?
No cited source identifies the three disabled settings or confirms a 50% reduction in gaming jitter. Establishing that result would require the exact router and firmware, ISP connection, test destination, measurement method, test duration, and before-and-after results. Until those details are available, treat the figure as an unverified personal claim—not as an expected outcome of disabling router settings.
