Neither a gaming console nor a gaming PC is always cheaper over time. A console generally costs less to buy at the outset, but the total depends on the games you purchase, whether you pay for online multiplayer, what equipment you already own, and how long you keep the system. HP’s estimated five-year cost ranges overlap, so they do not establish a universal winner.
Compare the cost of ownership, not just the purchase price
A fair comparison uses the same ownership period and similar gaming needs. A system that costs less at checkout may not be less expensive across several years once you account for games, subscriptions, storage, upgrades, and equipment you need to buy.
Start with the games and performance you actually want. Compare options that can run those games at your desired resolution and frame rate; the available estimates do not provide a matched PC build and console configuration. Include a monitor, keyboard, or mouse only if you need to purchase one. If you already own suitable equipment, count its cost as zero for this decision rather than treating it as a new PC expense.

HP’s US-facing editorial comparison gives these broad estimates. HP does not describe them as an independent study or a current, matched retailer basket, so use them as indicative ranges, not a direct price test. The publication date is not stated on the reviewed page.

| Cost measure | Gaming PC | PS5 or Xbox Series X console |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated initial hardware price | $800–$2,500+ | $400–$500 |
| Estimated total over five years | $1,400–$3,900 | $1,260–$2,250 |
HP says its five-year estimates include peripherals, subscriptions, upgrades or storage, and ten game purchases. The ranges overlap: a PC at the lower end may cost less than a console at the upper end, while a higher-cost PC may cost more. The figures therefore do not show that one platform will be cheaper for every buyer. HP’s comparison

Games and buying habits
Make a list of the games you expect to buy during your ownership period and check their current prices in your region. Whether you usually buy at launch, wait for sales, or play a small number of long-running games can affect your total. HP notes that PC game sales can lower costs, but the available evidence does not establish a universal saving or a fixed PC-versus-console price difference.

Online multiplayer subscriptions
Count a console subscription only if you play games that require it and expect to subscribe. Check the current terms and price for your region and plan; do not assume every console player needs the same subscription. Apply the same principle to any PC service you would actually pay for: include real planned spending, not a generic platform charge.
Peripherals, storage, and upgrades
Only add equipment you lack or need to replace. HP describes PC upgrades such as a graphics card or storage as optional ways to change or extend a system, while console upgrades are primarily storage expansion. An upgrade is not automatically a saving: include its cost and compare it with the alternative of keeping the existing setup or replacing it later. HP’s guide to PC and console gaming

Ownership period, repairs, and replacement
Choose a realistic number of years for your comparison and use it for both systems. Include expected repairs or replacement only when you have a defensible estimate; the published ranges do not give a separate, standardized repair allowance. A PC may be upgraded in parts, while moving to a new console generation or performance tier may require buying another system. Neither outcome has a fixed cost or schedule that applies to every owner.
Resale and trade-in
If you expect to sell or trade in a system, subtract only a realistic net amount you can support for your condition, location, and timing. Microsoft’s June 25, 2026 announcement described previously played, trade-in, and certified refurbished routes, but it did not establish resale values. Microsoft’s Xbox console price update

Hardware prices can change during ownership
Microsoft announced that Xbox console prices would change worldwide effective August 1, 2026: US prices would increase by $100 for 512 GB models and $150 for 1 TB models, and the 2 TB model would be discontinued. This is a dated price-change announcement, not a complete current price list, and it illustrates why a comparison should use local prices checked when you buy. Microsoft’s announcement

Build a comparison for your own situation
- Set the scope: choose your country, the two systems or configurations you are considering, and the same ownership period for each.
- Match your needs: list the games, resolution, and frame-rate target that matter to you. Avoid comparing a high-end PC with a console if the performance or experience you want is not equivalent.
- Price the entry point: use current local hardware prices and add tax plus only the peripherals you would need to buy.
- Add planned use: total the games you expect to purchase at prices consistent with your habits, and include subscriptions only if you will use them.
- Account for later costs: add likely storage, upgrades, maintenance, or replacement costs over the chosen period. Keep optional purchases separate from necessities.
- Estimate net cost cautiously: subtract a realistic resale or trade-in amount only if you have a credible basis for it. Do not rely on an unverified future value.
- Consider other uses separately: if a PC will also serve work or creative tasks, that may make it more useful to you. Treat that as personal value, not an automatic dollar saving.
When each platform may make more financial sense
A console may suit you better if
- You want a lower initial hardware price and the console meets your gaming needs.
- You already have the required display and accessories, or the console bundle includes what you need.
- Your expected game and subscription spending fits your budget.
- You prefer not to price, select, or install component upgrades.
A gaming PC may suit you better if
- You already own compatible peripherals, reducing what you need to spend to get started.
- You value optional component upgrades and are willing to budget for them.
- You expect to use the same machine for work or creative tasks as well as gaming; HP notes this dual-use potential, but it does not assign it a monetary value.
- Your planned games and actual sale-buying habits make the PC’s software costs work for you.
These are decision factors, not guarantees of lower lifetime spending. Your own prices, equipment, and habits determine the result.
