Keyboards, mice, controllers, headsets and gaming chairs collect dust, skin oils, sweat or crumbs through regular use. Clean them with methods suited to the specific device and its materials: switch electronics off, use a soft cloth with minimal moisture, and let everything dry completely before use. These five are practical items to check—not a ranked list of the “dirtiest” gear.
Before you start: Unplug wired devices and switch off wireless ones; remove replaceable batteries when the manufacturer advises it. Never spray or pour cleaner directly onto a device, and keep moisture out of keys, seams, ports, microphones, sensors and charging contacts. Don’t submerge electronics that aren’t rated for it. Alcohol guidance varies by product, so check the exact model’s care instructions rather than assuming one cleaner is safe for all gear.
1. How to clean a gaming keyboard
Crumbs and dust settle between keys, while the key surfaces pick up oils from frequent handling. Start with dry debris removal, then wipe the surfaces without letting liquid seep into the keyboard.

- Disconnect the keyboard. Check its model instructions before removing any keycaps; not every keyboard should be cleaned that way.
- Remove loose debris. Turn the keyboard upside down and gently tap it. Use compressed air or a gentle dusting-brush vacuum to clear debris between keys.
- Wipe the keys. Use a soft lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly moistened with a cleaner approved for that model. Do not let liquid drip between the keys or spray it directly onto the keyboard.
- Let it dry. Make sure the keyboard is fully dry before reconnecting it.
Microsoft and Logitech both recommend compressed air and a lightly moistened soft or lint-free cloth for their keyboards. Microsoft permits an isopropyl alcohol solution of 70% or less for its mouse and keyboard; that guidance is specific to Microsoft accessories, not a universal rule. 2. How to clean a gaming mouse
Wipe the outside, scroll wheel and sensor gently. Switch off a wireless mouse or disconnect a wired one first, and keep moisture away from openings and the sensor.
- Use a soft lint-free cloth, or a cotton swab for narrow areas, lightly dampened with a cleaner approved for the mouse.
- Wipe the outer surface and wheel without pushing liquid into seams.
- Clean around the optical sensor gently; avoid leaving lint or moisture there.
- Wait until the mouse is completely dry before switching it on or reconnecting it.
Microsoft’s guidance allows a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly dampened with mild soap and water for its mouse’s outer surface, wheel and optical sensor; Logitech recommends a lightly moistened lint-free cloth for its devices. Microsoft also says to clean its accessories “monthly or whenever needed.” That is Microsoft’s recommendation for its accessories, not a standard interval for all gaming gear. Check the Microsoft instructions or Logitech guidance for the applicable model.

3. How to clean a game controller
Turn off the console and unplug accessories before cleaning. For routine cleaning, Nintendo’s instructions for the Switch, Joy-Con controllers and covered accessories call for a clean, soft cloth dampened with water and wrung out well. Keep liquid out of openings, don’t pour it onto or submerge the controller, and wait until it is fully dry before using it.
Nintendo’s page also describes disinfection with a consumer-grade disinfectant containing about 70% alcohol, applied lightly to a cloth. This applies to the Nintendo products covered by that guidance; don’t transfer it to another controller. Razer instead recommends a lint-free microfiber cloth and compressed air for hard-to-reach areas on its controllers. Follow the instructions for your own model, especially when considering disinfection.

4. How to clean a gaming headset and earcups
A headset may combine plastic, coatings, cables and ear cushions made from different materials. Clean each part according to its material and the headset maker’s instructions; don’t assume the same wipe or solution is suitable for the whole device.

- Plastic parts: Logitech recommends particular fragrance-free wipes or makeup-removing tissue for some headset plastics. Check whether wipes are approved for your device before using them.
- Leatherette earpads: Logitech provides separate guidance for leatherette and says alcohol wipes may be used only on a limited basis. Avoid treating that as permission to use alcohol freely on other headset materials.
- Razer audio peripherals: Razer advises against alcohol-based cleaning solutions on its devices and suggests a well-wrung microfiber cloth with mild soap and water for its audio peripherals.
- VR lenses: HTC VIVE says to use a clean, dry cloth on VIVE Focus 3 lenses and never to use cleaning solution on them.

Chair upholstery determines what is safe to use. Check the chair’s material label and care guide before applying cleaner, and test a permitted method on an inconspicuous area if the maker recommends it.

- EPU or PVC synthetic leather: Razer recommends a soft or microfiber cloth with warm water. For stubborn stains on the specified synthetic-leather category, it advises a soft brush with mild leather cleaner.
- Mesh: Razer recommends a soft or microfiber cloth with warm water; brushing can help lift crumbs and grime.
- Alcantara: Razer advises dusting with a soft brush or dry cloth, or vacuuming, then wiping with a damp white cotton cloth.
Air-dry the chair before using it, and avoid harsh chemicals or rough abrasives. The instructions above are Razer’s material-specific guidance, so check your chair’s own manual if it uses another fabric or finish. See Razer’s device-cleaning instructions.
Choose the cleaning method by device, material and purpose
Dust removal, wiping visible dirt and disinfecting are different tasks. Start with the method the manufacturer permits for the specific device and surface; use no more moisture or stronger cleaner than that guidance allows.
