If you’re asking, “What games have save info carry into the next game, like The Witcher and Mass Effect?”—the clearest examples are the Mass Effect trilogy, Dragon Age, and The Witcher 2 into The Witcher 3. They do not all transfer the same things: some carry forward story decisions, some read an earlier save, and some only recreate a few past choices.
What “save carryover” can mean
A sequel can refer to an earlier game without importing a complete save. Before choosing a series, consider what you want to carry forward:
- Story decisions: Earlier choices influence events or dialogue in a later game.
- Save import: The sequel reads data from a save file created by the previous game.
- World-state setup: You define earlier events in a separate tool, then bring that history into the sequel.
- Selected callbacks: The game asks about or simulates a small number of past decisions, which may affect a scene without transferring broader progress.
These mechanisms do not necessarily move a character’s stats, equipment, or inventory. Check what a particular handoff supports rather than assuming that “import” means everything carries over.

Mass Effect: 1 → 2 → 3
The Mass Effect trilogy is the strongest fit if you want one continuing story shaped by decisions made across multiple games. EA describes Mass Effect Legendary Edition as a collection of the first three games and says choices travel from one game to the next. That makes playing in order the natural way to experience the accumulating story. The source describes consequential decisions, not a guarantee that every item or statistic transfers unchanged.

Dragon Age: Origins → Dragon Age II → Inquisition
Dragon Age uses different handoff methods across the series. BioWare discussed direct save import from Origins into Dragon Age II; executive producer Mark Darrah described the import as bringing across “something in the order of 600 different data points.” That is his approximate description, not a universal count for every player or transfer.
For Dragon Age: Inquisition, BioWare described Dragon Age Keep as a way to create and import a historical world state, including for players who did not have their old save files available. This is a way to establish past events, not to import a playable character with all of their prior equipment and stats. Darrah wrote that it was a priority for fans to have their decisions carry forward “regardless of their past or future platform.” See BioWare’s Dragon Age Keep announcement.

The Witcher 2 → The Witcher 3
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt can simulate The Witcher 2 save data. WB Games Support says selecting “Yes” when prompted leads to a special conversation. This is a selected-decision callback, not evidence that the earlier save’s full progress, inventory, or stats transfer. See WB Games Support’s explanation of simulated Witcher 2 saves.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
The Veilguard offers a more limited link to Inquisition than a direct save import or Keep-based world-state import. An EA staff forum response says it does not directly import older saves or integrate with Keep. During character setup, players can establish the Inquisitor and a few key decisions from Inquisition. How to choose a series
- Want a continuous, choice-driven trilogy? Start with Mass Effect 1 and play through Mass Effect 3 in order.
- Want prior decisions represented even without an old save file? The Dragon Age handoff to Inquisition was designed around a constructed world state through Keep.
- Want to see a past choice acknowledged in a sequel? The Witcher 3’s simulated Witcher 2 save can produce a special conversation.
- Want to set a small number of previous-series details in the new game? The Veilguard allows a limited Inquisition history during character setup rather than importing the old save.
Availability and transfer requirements can depend on the game version and platform. The cited descriptions establish the mechanisms above, but do not specify support for every platform or edition. Check the instructions for your copy before relying on a particular import path.
