Only one project in the available evidence clearly meets the strict claim of more than 10 years in development: Squadron 42. Cloud Imperium says work began in 2014, and its August 2026 release plan targets Q2 2027. Beyond Good & Evil 2 has a much older announcement history, but its current open-world prequel was re-announced in 2017. The Elder Scrolls VI was announced in 2018, so it has not yet passed the ten-year mark. These timelines show why a long wait since announcement is not the same as a confirmed decade of continuous development.

Which games have been in development for over 10 years?

Strictly applying that description to the documented examples here leaves one clear fit: Squadron 42. Cloud Imperium says development began in 2014. That makes the project more than a decade old by its own stated start date, though the studio’s current release window remains a plan rather than a confirmed launch.

The other two projects below are included because their histories help explain the headline’s ambiguity. Beyond Good & Evil 2 has been publicly known since 2008, but the current game was presented again in 2017 as an open-world prequel. The Elder Scrolls VI has a long wait ahead of it, but its 2018 announcement means it has not reached ten years since public reveal as of October 12, 2026. The evidence does not establish five unreleased games with confirmed development periods longer than a decade, so it would be misleading to label five that way.

Game What the timeline establishes Latest dated status in the sources
Squadron 42 Cloud Imperium says development began in 2014. Cloud Imperium’s August 27, 2026 letter set a Q2 2027 release plan.
Beyond Good & Evil 2 First announced in 2008; re-announced in 2017 as an open-world prequel, according to GameSpot. Ubisoft said in September 2020 that the game was well underway and pursuing production milestones.
The Elder Scrolls VI Announced in June 2018, so the public wait was about eight years and four months as of October 12, 2026. Bethesda Game Studios said in July 2026 that it was the studio’s primary development focus.

Why a game’s age is hard to measure

“In development” can refer to several different milestones: when a studio first began work, when a project was announced, or when its current design and production entered a recognizable form. Those dates may be far apart. An announcement can precede substantial production, and a project that is reworked or reintroduced does not necessarily represent one uninterrupted development cycle.

For Beyond Good & Evil 2, GameSpot reports a first announcement in 2008 and a 2017 re-announcement as an open-world prequel (GameSpot’s long-development games list). Ubisoft’s September 18, 2020 update described the project as well underway, with a build containing hours of gameplay, while saying the team was still pursuing production milestones (Ubisoft’s development update). That is evidence of substantial work by 2020, not proof that the current version had been in continuous development since 2008.

Squadron 42: the clearest decade-plus case

Cloud Imperium’s chairman letter dated August 27, 2026 says development of Squadron 42 began in 2014. The letter also explains that the studio had split staff between Squadron 42 and Star Citizen, a difficult allocation that shifted toward Squadron 42 near the end of 2024 (Cloud Imperium’s August 2026 chairman letter, archived by Star Citizen Tools).

What the latest release plan says

The same letter says the studio had previously planned a 2026 release, initially targeting Q4, then chose Q2 2027 as a better window. This is Cloud Imperium’s plan as of August 2026, not a guaranteed release date or an independently verified completion estimate. The change is a reminder that a published window can move as development continues.

How Star Citizen fits the story

Star Citizen is useful context because it shares studio resources with Squadron 42, but it is not an unreleased game in the same sense: its live version and planned updates are described on the official RSI roadmap. The roadmap cautions that planned features may move, so it should be treated as a changing status page rather than a fixed schedule.

Beyond Good & Evil 2: a long public history, not one proven continuous cycle

The gap between the 2008 first announcement and 2017 re-announcement explains why the game is often associated with a very long wait. But the current open-world prequel framing dates to the later announcement, and the available sources do not establish that the version now being developed is simply the same production running continuously since 2008.

Ubisoft’s 2020 update offers a more concrete snapshot of that period: Senior Producer Guillaume Brunier wrote that the game was “well underway” and that the team was concentrating on core development and production milestones. It tells readers where the studio said the project stood then; it does not provide a current release date.

The Elder Scrolls VI: a long wait, but not yet 10 years

Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls VI on June 10, 2018, describing it as being in pre-production (Bethesda’s 2018 announcement). As of October 12, 2026, about eight years and four months had elapsed since that public reveal—short of ten years.

In July 2026, Bethesda Game Studios said the sequel was its primary development focus, with most of the team working on it (Bethesda Game Studios’ 2026 studio update). The same update says Skyrim had sold more than 65 million copies; that figure concerns the predecessor, not the sequel’s development duration. Bethesda’s focus statement indicates priority, but it does not specify a release date.

What to take from these timelines

  • Use a confirmed development start date when one is stated, and label announcement dates separately.
  • Treat re-announcements and substantial changes in a project’s framing as important context, not proof of a single uninterrupted production.
  • Read release windows as dated plans from the developer; they can change.
