The closest overall match is Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, because it shares Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Pawn system, vocation-based builds and physical real-time combat. For a different emphasis, choose Elden Ring for open-world discovery, Monster Hunter Rise or Monster Hunter: World for preparation and giant-monster fights, Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning for accessible class flexibility, or Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for a heavily authored story with switchable party members.
None of these alternatives reproduces every part of Dragon’s Dogma 2. Its unusual combination of climbable large enemies, reactive encounters, changeable vocations and AI companions that act on your commands is what makes the game difficult to replace. The best choice depends on which of those systems matters most to you.

What makes Dragon’s Dogma 2 different?
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a single-player action RPG built around three systems working together: physical real-time combat, flexible vocations and a customizable AI party. Capcom’s manual lists Fighter, Mage, Archer and Thief as starting vocations. Each has a distinct way to attack, defend and support the group, and you can change vocation at a vocation guild rather than being locked permanently into your opening choice.

Attacks are performed directly in real time rather than selected from a turn menu. Position, timing, terrain and enemy anatomy matter. Against a large monster, the environment may create an opening, and the creature can react when you exploit the same tactic repeatedly. This makes encounters feel less like stat checks and more like problems to solve while moving through the world.
#1 Best Overall
- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories.
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey.
- Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
- Pre-order Bonus: Superior Weapons Quartet
Pawns form a responsive party
PlayStation describes a main Pawn that you customize and two additional Pawns you can hire, for a party of up to three companions alongside the Arisen. The official description calls Pawns “AI companions devoted to serving the Arisen.” They are not simply damage bonuses: their skills, equipment and behavior influence how you approach fights and exploration.
Commands matter outside combat
The manual documents commands that spread Pawns across a battlefield and direct them toward chests, mechanisms, gathering points or suggested tasks. That gives the party a practical role while exploring. You are still the only human-controlled character, but the group can scout, create openings and handle objectives when you issue the right instruction.
The world creates unscripted pressure
The adventure crosses two dangerous kingdoms. Encounters can change as enemies respond to your tricks, and environmental opportunities can turn a fight with a large creature in your favor. This emergent structure is a major reason that a conventional party RPG, even one with excellent companions, may not feel like a direct substitute.

A note on the game’s reach
Capcom’s April 2, 2024 investor release reported 2.5 million Dragon’s Dogma 2 units sold and stated that the Dragon’s Dogma series had surpassed 10 million units cumulatively. Those are company-reported sales figures, not a measure of quality, but they show how unusual action-and-party design reached a broad audience.

1. Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen — the closest overall match
If your question is “What RPG has combat and companions most like Dragon’s Dogma 2?”, start here. Dark Arisen is the earlier game in the same design lineage, so its vocation-based action combat and Pawn concept are recognizably related to the sequel.
Rank #2
- A Grand Adventure – Dragon’s Dogma 2 begins in a subterranean jail, where the Dragon’s voice echoes in the fog of lost memories. With their heart taken by the Dragon, the Arisen is set on a path to slay that symbol of the world’s destruction as it soars through the sky on massive wings, breathing flames that scorch everything in its path. With the Arisen’s future veiled in mystery, what challenges and triumphs await on the path to their destiny?
- Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. Pawns create the feeling of a cooperative gameplay experience by offering unique characteristics, skills, and knowledge gained from their experiences with other Arisen.
- Made with RE ENGINE – Capcom’s advanced RE ENGINE produces vividly detailed, high fidelity graphics combined with immersive physics and complex and reactive character AI to create a setting where decisions, and their consequences, come to life.
Why it matches
- You control one hero directly in fast real-time fights while AI companions fill complementary roles.
- The Pawn system gives you a customizable main companion and additional recruitable party members rather than a fixed cast alone.
- Vocation choices change your moveset and the way you contribute to a fight.
- Large monsters are encounters to physically engage, not merely oversized health bars.
Where it differs
It is an older game, so interface details, enemy variety and presentation are less refined than in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Its world is also smaller and its systems are less modernized. Choose it for the underlying formula, not for a visual or technical equivalent.
2. Elden Ring — choose it for discovery and demanding combat
Elden Ring is the best alternative when the part you value most is setting out with little certainty, finding optional routes and mastering punishing real-time combat. Its open world rewards observation, experimentation and returning to a challenge after changing your equipment or approach.
What Dragon’s Dogma 2 players will recognize
- Combat is immediate and timing-sensitive, with meaningful distinctions between melee, ranged and magic approaches.
- Large enemies and bosses reward learning patterns, positioning and attack windows.
- Build choices can produce very different playstyles, from close-range weapons to spell-focused characters.
- Exploration frequently leads to discoveries that are not placed in a simple linear order.
The companion trade-off
Its companion experience is fundamentally different. Spirit summons are situational helpers, and multiplayer involves other players; neither is a persistent, recruitable Pawn party that travels with you, comments through behavior and follows commands for exploration tasks. Pick Elden Ring if solitary discovery and combat mastery outrank party management.
3. Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter: World — for preparation and giant-monster hunts
The Monster Hunter games are strong choices if your favorite Dragon’s Dogma 2 moments involve studying a large creature, preparing a loadout and exploiting an opening. They make the hunt itself the main activity rather than one element of a broader role-playing journey.
Monster Hunter Rise
Rise emphasizes quick movement, weapon-specific mastery and repeatable missions. You prepare before leaving, learn how a target behaves, gather materials and use the resulting rewards to improve equipment. The loop is highly focused: select a hunt, track or engage the monster, carve materials and use them to refine your build.
Rank #3
- The deep, explorable fantasy world of Dragon's Dogma... Dragon's Dogma is a narrative-driven, single-player action RPG that challenges players to shape their own experience—from the appearance of their Arisen, their vocation, and their party, to how they approach various situations and much more.
Monster Hunter: World
World takes a more deliberate approach to tracking, positioning and environmental interaction across interconnected regions. Its weapons have deep movesets, and each hunt asks you to understand a monster’s behavior rather than simply increase damage. It is a good fit if you prefer a slower learning curve and a stronger sense of researching prey.
How companions differ
Both games provide AI hunting support and multiplayer options, but their party model is not Dragon’s Dogma 2’s Pawn system. Companions support a mission, while the hunt remains the central objective. Choose either game when weapon mastery and large-monster encounters matter more than an open-ended fantasy party adventure.
4. Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning — accessible fantasy and flexible builds
Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning suits players who want approachable real-time fantasy combat and room to reshape a character’s abilities. Its class and ability building are flexible, so you can experiment with different combinations instead of committing to a narrow archetype from the start.
Why it can work
- Combat is active without requiring the same level of precision as the most demanding action RPGs.
- A large quest-filled world supports exploration between fights.
- Ability choices let you tune a character toward different fantasy roles.
- It is easier to understand if you want role-playing flexibility without learning a complex companion command system.
Why it is not a direct replacement
Its world structure and companion systems are less like-for-like. The game does not center on a persistent AI party that behaves like Pawns, and its large enemies do not define the experience in the same climbing-and-counterplay way. Choose it for accessible build experimentation, not for a Pawn simulation.
5. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth — for a strongly authored party adventure
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the right recommendation when you want real-time combat with several playable characters and a story that gives the party a strong identity. You can switch between party members during battles, combine their abilities and adjust your approach to different enemies.

- On your journey, you’ll be joined by Pawns, mysterious otherworldly beings, in an adventure so unique you will feel as if accompanied by other players while on your own adventure.
- All of these elements are elevated further by the latest in graphics, artificial intelligence (AI), and physics technology to create a truly immersive fantasy world in Dragon's Dogma 2.
What it shares
- Combat unfolds in real time rather than through a purely turn-based interface.
- Switchable party members create tactical choices during a fight.
- Different characters encourage different roles and attack patterns.
- Large areas provide room for optional activities alongside the main route.
What changes
The party is authored rather than procedurally recruited. Relationships, dialogue and personal arcs are central, while Dragon’s Dogma 2 lets AI companions emerge from their configurable roles and behavior. Rebirth also follows a more directed narrative and progression structure, so it is a better fit for story-first players than for anyone seeking completely emergent travel.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the alternatives compare on the six decisions that matter
Combat speed and physicality
Choose Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen for the nearest feel. Choose Elden Ring for stricter timing and harsher punishment. Choose Monster Hunter for weapon mastery and deliberate preparation. Kingdoms of Amalur is the most approachable, while Final Fantasy VII Rebirth combines direct control with frequent character switching.
Open world versus missions or zones
Elden Ring offers the strongest sense of unrestricted discovery. Dark Arisen and Kingdoms of Amalur provide broad fantasy spaces with quests and detours. The Monster Hunter games are mission-based, and Rebirth organizes broad regions around an authored journey. Dragon’s Dogma 2 sits between these approaches: it has a connected adventure with dangerous travel and encounters that can interrupt plans.
Class and build flexibility
Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Dark Arisen organize identity around vocations. Elden Ring offers the broadest spread of weapons, statistics and spells. Monster Hunter builds revolve around weapon choice, armor and skills, while Kingdoms of Amalur makes ability experimentation especially accessible. Rebirth differentiates characters more than it asks you to rebuild one character from scratch.
Large-monster encounters
For a game where hunting large creatures is the central loop, choose Monster Hunter Rise or World. For a broader RPG in which giant enemies can become memorable unscripted events, choose Dark Arisen or stay with Dragon’s Dogma 2. Elden Ring has imposing bosses and field enemies, but the encounter design serves a wider action-RPG structure.
Companion type
This is the decisive distinction. Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Dark Arisen use persistent AI Pawns. Rebirth uses an authored party. Elden Ring uses summons and multiplayer. Monster Hunter provides hunting support and multiplayer, and Kingdoms of Amalur is less centered on party behavior. If you specifically want companions who can be recruited, equipped and directed through exploration, the two Dragon’s Dogma games are the only close matches in this list.
Story emphasis
Pick Final Fantasy VII Rebirth for character arcs and a guided narrative. Pick Elden Ring for a more indirect story assembled through the world and its discoveries. Monster Hunter keeps story secondary to hunts, while Dragon’s Dogma 2, Dark Arisen and Kingdoms of Amalur place more weight on the player’s journey through a fantasy setting than on a continuously cinematic party drama.
Quick Recap
Which game should you choose?
- You want Pawns, vocation combat and the closest design lineage: choose Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen.
- You want an open world full of secrets and the toughest combat here: choose Elden Ring.
- You want every session to revolve around preparing for and defeating giant monsters: choose Monster Hunter Rise for faster movement or Monster Hunter: World for a more deliberate hunt.
- You want flexible fantasy abilities with an approachable learning curve: choose Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning.
- You want switchable party members and a strongly written story: choose Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
How to set expectations before switching
- Do not expect a summon, co-op partner or fixed party member to behave exactly like a Dragon’s Dogma 2 Pawn; those systems serve different purposes.
- If exploration is your priority, confirm whether the game uses a genuinely open world, broad zones or mission-select screens before buying.
- If build experimentation matters, check whether flexibility comes from changing vocations, redistributing statistics, swapping weapons or assembling armor skills.
- If giant monsters are the attraction, decide whether you want them as the main repeatable objective, as optional bosses or as unpredictable events during travel.
- If story is central, favor an authored party game; if emergent behavior is central, favor the Dragon’s Dogma lineage.
