Choose ELDEN RING if the appeal of Crimson Desert is finding hidden places while facing demanding fantasy combat. Choose The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom if you are most interested in freely traversing a huge environment across land and sky. Neither is a one-to-one replacement: each matches a different part of Crimson Desert’s open-world design.
What Crimson Desert sets as the comparison baseline
Pearl Abyss presents Crimson Desert as an open-world action-adventure set in Pywel, an unfamiliar realm built for open exploration. The official framing emphasizes moving through the world rather than following a narrow sequence of missions.

PlayStation’s feature description identifies five regions—Hernand, Pailune, Demeniss, Delesyia and the Crimson Desert—and describes a mix of wilderness, cities, ruins, quests, puzzles and activities. It also highlights several ways to move through the environment, including horseback travel, climbing and gliding. Pearl Abyss’s worldwide launch announcement on March 19, 2026, likewise describes a seamless world that connects wilderness, cities and ruins.

#1 Best Overall
- ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition contains the Elden Ring Base Game + Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion + Additional Content (including Torrent Skins, New Armors, and More...)
- MASSIVE OPEN WORLD
- DEEP, CUSTOMIZABLE COMBAT
- NEW STARTING CLASSES
- NEW PLAYER-FRIENDLY ENHANCEMENTS
- Roaming: large landscapes where you can leave the obvious route.
- Discovery: ruins, puzzles, activities or other reasons to investigate.
- Traversal: meaningful movement across ground, vertical spaces or the air.
- Action: combat that may turn an expedition into a serious challenge.
- Self-direction: room to decide what to do next instead of moving through a fixed corridor.
ELDEN RING is the strongest match for discovery tied to difficult combat. Tears of the Kingdom is the strongest match for traversal and a world that extends above the ground. Other games are often mentioned by players, but the available evidence does not establish their current editions, platforms or exact fit well enough to rank them alongside these two.
Quick comparison
| Game | Best match for a Crimson Desert player | Exploration and traversal | Combat and tone | Platform context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ELDEN RING | Discovery that regularly leads to demanding fights | Open fields connect to large, complex dungeons; exploration rewards leaving the obvious route | Formidable bosses and combat mastery; a darker, more dangerous fantasy atmosphere | Steam listing; released February 24, 2022 |
| The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom | Freedom to travel and investigate across a broad world | Hyrule is presented as vast, with exploration across land and skies | Its traversal emphasis is established; the available material does not establish a matching tone or combat model | Nintendo platform; not a PlayStation, Xbox or PC option |
The table is a fit guide, not a claim that either game has identical combat, story structure or atmosphere to Crimson Desert.
ELDEN RING: choose it for discovery with demanding fantasy combat
Why it fits
The Steam description of ELDEN RING pairs open fields with large, complex dungeons. That structure makes exploration inseparable from challenge: looking beyond the obvious path can lead to a new area, a difficult encounter or a formidable boss. If your favorite imagined moment in Crimson Desert is riding toward something visible on the horizon and discovering that the detour is dangerous but worthwhile, this is the closest recommendation in the available material.

The game also explicitly emphasizes exploration, formidable bosses and combat mastery. You are not choosing it for a relaxed sightseeing tour. The central trade-off is that the world’s rewards and surprises are guarded by fights that can stop progress until you learn their patterns and improve your approach.
What the comparison does—and does not—promise
Both games support the idea of an open world where the player can investigate beyond the main route, but their priorities differ. Crimson Desert is described through a broad mixture of wilderness, settlements, ruins, quests, puzzles, activities and several traversal methods. The cited ELDEN RING description concentrates on connected open fields, complex dungeons, bosses and mastery of combat.

- Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
- Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.
That means ELDEN RING is a better answer to “Which game makes exploration feel dangerous?” than to “Which game gives me the same blend of city life, horseback travel, gliding and varied activities?” The available description does not establish an equivalent activity list or traversal system.
Who should pick it
- Pick it if difficult encounters are part of the appeal of exploring.
- Pick it if you want discoveries organized around open fields, dungeons and bosses.
- Pick it if you are comfortable with learning through repeated attempts and improving combat technique.
- Do not pick it solely because you want a calm, low-pressure journey through scenery; the cited features put challenge at the center.
Release and platform note
Valve’s Steam listing gives ELDEN RING a release date of February 24, 2022. Steam establishes the PC listing and the game’s stated exploration and combat features; it does not, by itself, establish current stock, pricing or any particular edition outside that listing.

Why it fits
Nintendo’s Tears of the Kingdom Explorer’s Guide describes Hyrule as vast and frames the journey across both land and skies. That makes it the clearest choice when the part of Crimson Desert that excites you is the act of moving through a large environment, spotting a distant possibility and finding your own route toward it.
The comparison is about spatial freedom rather than identical content. Crimson Desert is described with horseback travel, climbing and gliding across five named regions. Nintendo’s guide supports a land-and-sky traversal comparison for Hyrule, but the supplied material does not establish that its combat, tone, quests or activities match Pearl Abyss’s game.
What makes the fit different from ELDEN RING
With ELDEN RING, the defining question is whether exploration leading into formidable combat sounds appealing. With Tears of the Kingdom, the defining question is whether you want the world itself—especially the relationship between ground and sky—to be the main object of curiosity.

If your priority is discovering how areas connect vertically and deciding where to go next, Tears of the Kingdom is the more direct fit. If you want every detour to carry the expectation of a severe fight, ELDEN RING is the better choice.

Platform limitation
Tears of the Kingdom is a Nintendo game. It is therefore not an option for readers who require a PlayStation, Xbox or PC game. Check your hardware before treating it as a practical recommendation; its traversal fit cannot overcome that platform requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare the games on four decision axes
1. Exploration structure and traversal
Start by identifying how you want to move. Crimson Desert combines open landscapes with cities, ruins, quests, puzzles and activities, then adds horseback travel, climbing and gliding. ELDEN RING offers open fields connected to large, complex dungeons. Tears of the Kingdom is framed around a vast Hyrule that spans land and skies.
- Choose ELDEN RING when the attraction is a route that may end in a dungeon or boss.
- Choose Tears of the Kingdom when you want to think in both horizontal and vertical directions—where to go on the ground and what lies above it.
- Stay with Crimson Desert when the specific combination of regions, settlements, ruins, puzzles, activities and multiple travel methods is what you want to experience together.
2. Combat difficulty
The cited description of ELDEN RING makes combat mastery and formidable bosses central. That is a clear signal that exploration will often be evaluated through your ability to handle difficult fights. The Crimson Desert material establishes action-adventure gameplay but does not provide a difficulty scale or a claim that its combat follows the same model.
The Tears of the Kingdom guide supports a traversal comparison, not a conclusion about matching combat difficulty. Do not select it on the assumption that it reproduces Crimson Desert’s action system.

3. Setting and tone
Pywel is presented as an unknown realm containing wilderness, cities and ruins. ELDEN RING offers a fantasy setting where the surrounding world and its dungeons are tied to dangerous encounters. Tears of the Kingdom offers Hyrule and an exploration frame that reaches into the skies.
Use atmosphere as a tie-breaker after deciding how you want to explore. A shared fantasy label does not make the worlds interchangeable, and the available descriptions do not establish identical stories, characters or tone.
4. Platform
Platform should be checked before any feature comparison. The PlayStation feature page provides a PS5 context for Crimson Desert; Pearl Abyss announced a worldwide launch on March 19, 2026. ELDEN RING is represented here by its Steam listing. Tears of the Kingdom is a Nintendo release. These references are enough to prevent an obvious mismatch, but they do not establish every current edition or regional availability.
What about Red Dead Redemption 2, Fallout, Skyrim and The Witcher?
Player discussions about games similar to Crimson Desert often mention Red Dead Redemption 2, Fallout, Skyrim and The Witcher. Those names are useful leads if you are building a broader personal shortlist: they show that readers associate the topic with roaming, discovery and large worlds rather than with one exact combat system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThey should not be treated as verified recommendations on the evidence available here. The discussion is anecdotal, including questions such as “What kind of games are similar to Crimson Desert” and whether the game would suit fans of recent Zelda titles. It does not establish current editions, platforms, feature parity or a representative ranking. Check each game’s current official listing for your platform before buying.
A practical decision guide
Choose ELDEN RING when…
- You want exploration to be tightly connected to combat challenge.
- Large dungeons and formidable bosses sound more appealing than a broad activity list.
- You are specifically looking for a fantasy game that rewards persistence and combat mastery.
Choose Tears of the Kingdom when…
- Your priority is moving through a vast world across land and skies.
- You want traversal and environmental discovery to lead the decision.
- You play on Nintendo hardware and do not need a PlayStation, Xbox or PC release.
Wait for Crimson Desert instead when…
- You want the particular Pywel setting and its five named regions.
- You are seeking the combination of wilderness, cities, ruins, quests, puzzles and activities described by PlayStation.
- Horseback travel, climbing and gliding are all part of the appeal, rather than just one preferred movement style.
Bottom line: match the feature you actually want
There is no single “Crimson Desert clone” established by these descriptions. ELDEN RING is the recommendation for players who want exploration to uncover difficult fantasy combat, while The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the recommendation for players who want a vast journey across land and sky. If your ideal game requires all of Pywel’s described ingredients—five regions, settlements, ruins, puzzles, activities and multiple traversal methods—neither comparison should be treated as an exact substitute.
