If Chrono Trigger’s time-spanning adventure, classic command battles, memorable ensemble, or 16-bit-era presentation is what you want more of, start with Live A Live, Dragon Quest XI S, or OCTOPATH TRAVELER II. They are not interchangeable: Live A Live is the closest match in classic Square Enix lineage and modernized presentation, Dragon Quest XI S is the best long-form traditional RPG follow-up, and OCTOPATH TRAVELER II is the strongest choice for multiple protagonists and tactical command combat. Sea of Stars is a reasonable retro-inspired alternative, while the broader SaGa catalog is best treated as a discovery path rather than a direct substitute.

What made Chrono Trigger distinctive?

Choosing a follow-up works better when you identify the part of Chrono Trigger you are trying to replace. Its adventure moves through a forgotten past, a distant future and the End of Time, giving its story a deliberately time-spanning shape. It also represents a particular kind of approachable Japanese role-playing game: a small cast traveling together, menu-driven battles, a bright retro presentation and a clear sense of forward momentum.

No recommendation below reproduces all of those qualities at once. The useful question is whether you want another game with a classic Square Enix lineage, a traditional party-based RPG, a more elaborate command system, multiple character stories or a modern game that deliberately evokes older design.

Quick comparison

Game Choose it for Story structure Combat and presentation Platform information established by the publisher
Live A Live A classic Square Enix RPG revived for a modern audience Distinctive scenario-based structure; not established as a Chrono Trigger-style time-travel party story HD-2D presentation and remastered music by original composer Yoko Shimomura The cited official page confirms the remake and its production credits, but the supplied material does not establish a complete platform list
Dragon Quest XI S A substantial, traditional adventure Conventional long-form RPG journey rather than a close match for Chrono Trigger’s time-travel premise Modern concepts combined with traditional RPG gameplay Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and Epic Games Store are listed on the current official Japanese page
OCTOPATH TRAVELER II Eight protagonists and tactical command battles Multiple traveler stories; the evidence does not establish a single connected party adventure in the same form as Chrono Trigger Break and Boost battle mechanics, character-specific field actions and HD-2D-style presentation Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows; package editions are listed
Sea of Stars A modern RPG with a retro-inspired sensibility Included here as an editorial comparison, not as a publisher-confirmed Chrono Trigger successor Retro-inspired by reputation in secondary coverage; specific mechanics and platform availability are not established by the supplied evidence Not stated in the cited evidence
SaGa series Further exploration beyond the closest matches Varies by individual game; no specific SaGa title is proven especially similar here Varies by title Square Enix’s catalog confirms the series as a publisher option, not a particular recommendation or platform set

1. Live A Live: the best classic-RPG revival

Why it belongs on your list

Live A Live is the most natural first stop if what you miss is the feeling of discovering an older Square Enix role-playing game that has been carefully brought to current audiences. The remake uses the HD-2D visual style associated with Octopath Traveler, combining pixel-art characters and environments with modern lighting and depth effects. That makes it a useful bridge between Chrono Trigger’s 16-bit identity and contemporary display technology.

#1 Best Overall
Octopath Traveler II - Nintendo Switch
  • Begin your adventure as one of eight new travelers, each with their own origins, motivations, and unique skills
  • The series’ HD-2D graphics, a fusion of retro pixel art and 3DCG, have reached even greater heights
  • The story takes place in Solistia, where diverse cultures thrive from east to west and the industries of the new era flourish; You can sail the seas and explore every corner of a world that changes from day to night
  • Each traveler has a unique set of Path Actions they can use to battle townspeople, obtain items, take others along in their travels, and more; Where will you go, What will you do, Every path is yours to take
  • Familiar mechanics from the original game have been preserved, like the freedom to develop your travelers’ jobs and skills, as well as the Break and Boost system that made battles so exhilarating; New mechanics have also been added

The official description also credits remastered music from original composer Yoko Shimomura and production by Takashi Tokita. Those credits matter because the remake is not merely using a retro aesthetic as decoration; it is explicitly tied to the people and material of the original game.

What it does not promise

Do not buy Live A Live expecting another version of Chrono Trigger’s single time-traveling party adventure. Its appeal is its lineage and presentation, not a claim that its narrative structure duplicates Chrono Trigger. Go in wanting a collection of unusual classic-RPG scenarios reintroduced with a polished visual treatment.

Who should choose it

  • Players who value Square Enix history and remakes of older RPGs.
  • Readers who want a stylized HD-2D look rather than fully modern 3D graphics.
  • Anyone more interested in variety of scenarios than in one continuous quest built around time travel.

2. Dragon Quest XI S: the traditional adventure pick

Why it is a strong follow-up

Dragon Quest XI S is the straightforward recommendation when you want another substantial, traditional Japanese RPG rather than a close plot analogue. Square Enix describes it as bringing modern concepts together with traditional RPG gameplay. That positioning makes it a good counterpoint to Chrono Trigger: the setting and systems are modernized, but the structure remains recognizably classic.

Rank #2
OCTOPATH TRAVELER II
  • Begin your adventure as one of eight new travelers, each with their own origins, motivations, and unique skills.
  • The series’ HD-2D graphics, a fusion of retro pixel art and 3DCG, have reached even greater heights.
  • The story takes place in Solistia, where diverse cultures thrive from east to west and the industries of the new era flourish. You can sail the seas and explore every corner of a world that changes from day to night.
  • Each traveler has a unique set of Path Actions they can use to battle townspeople, obtain items, take others along in their travels, and more. Where will you go? What will you do? Every path is yours to take.
  • Familiar mechanics from the original game have been preserved, like the freedom to develop your travelers’ jobs and skills, as well as the Break and Boost system that made battles so exhilarating. New mechanics have also been added.

Choose it when your favorite part of Chrono Trigger was the reliable rhythm of exploring a world, meeting a party, selecting commands in battle and moving toward a large, clearly presented adventure. It is less suitable if your priority is specifically a story that jumps between historical eras.

Current platform and edition notes

The current official Japanese Dragon Quest XI S page lists Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and the Epic Games Store. It lists the Switch 2 edition as released on September 24, 2026. The same page gives the original S release dates as December 4, 2020 for console and December 5, 2020 for Steam and Epic Games Store.

Those dates and the platform list describe the editions shown on that page, not a guarantee that every regional storefront carries every version. Check the store serving your country before buying, especially if you want a boxed copy or a Switch 2-specific release.

OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 (Nintendo Switch 2)
  • Embark on an adventure of your own creation. The latest in the OCTOPATH TRAVELER series.
  • New story content – Experience original, streamlined story content and quests with new paths to achieve.
  • Character creation – Create a customized protagonist with unique appearance, voice, motions and more.
  • Town building system – Rebuild the protagonist's town as the story progresses with evolving town reconstruction mechanics and development while inviting new people to live in the town.*
  • HD-2D Visuals – The series’ iconic graphic style returns, bringing a striking blend of retro 2D characters in a beautiful 3D world.

Who should choose it

  • Players who want a long, conventional party RPG with modern production values.
  • Readers who prefer a single main adventure to a collection of separate character scenarios.
  • Anyone choosing by platform, since the official listing spans Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox and PC storefronts.

3. OCTOPATH TRAVELER II: eight heroes and tactical command battles

What matches Chrono Trigger

OCTOPATH TRAVELER II is the clearest choice if “games like Chrono Trigger” means a broad cast of playable heroes and battles that reward deliberate command selection. Its official page introduces eight travelers. Each has character-specific field actions, so the party is not only a set of combat portraits; different characters affect how you interact with the world.

Combat is built around Break and Boost. Those mechanics give the familiar turn-based command menu a layer of timing and resource management: you are deciding not only which action to use, but when to expose an opponent’s weakness and when to strengthen a move. That is a concrete mechanical match for readers who remember Chrono Trigger’s battles as more active than simply selecting “Attack” every turn.

Set the story expectation correctly

Eight protagonists create breadth, but the cited description does not establish that their narratives connect in precisely the same way as Chrono Trigger’s traveling party. Choose it for the variety of viewpoints, field actions and command-battle strategy, not on the assumption that it is a direct narrative sequel in spirit.

Platforms and physical copies

The official listing names Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows. It also lists package versions, making the Nintendo Switch package edition a substantiated physical-product option. Regional packaging, language support, stock and the exact contents of a package can differ, so confirm the local edition before ordering.

The original release date listed by the publisher is February 24, 2023, with the Steam release following on February 25. Those are release dates for the editions identified by the official page, not a statement about later regional launches.

Who should choose it

  • Players who want eight distinct protagonists rather than one central hero.
  • Fans of turn-based battles with a visible tactical layer.
  • Readers who want a physical Nintendo Switch edition and are willing to verify regional stock.

4. Sea of Stars: a retro-inspired alternative

Why it is worth considering

Sea of Stars appears in secondary recommendation coverage as a game that echoes different aspects of Chrono Trigger. That makes it a plausible pick when your priority is the feeling of playing a modern RPG designed with retro influences in mind.

Best Value
Octopath Traveler (Nintendo Switch 2)
  • Play as eight different characters, each with their own stories to uncover and side quests to complete
  • Explore the enchanting yet perilous world of Orsterra, spanning 8 vast regions and discover each character’s full story as their journey unfolds
  • Use each character's distinctive abilities (Path Actions), skills and talents in frenetic battles
  • Enjoy the accessible yet deep turn-based combat battle system and break through enemy lines by identifying and targeting their weaknesses
  • Solve side quests and story scenarios in a few different ways and take decisions that shape your path.

How to interpret the recommendation

This is an editorial comparison, not an official statement that Sea of Stars is a Chrono Trigger-like game, and it is not based on a firsthand playtest for this article. The available evidence also does not establish a platform list, performance claim, price, completion time or physical-edition detail. Treat it as a stylistic possibility and verify the edition sold in your region before making a purchase.

It is especially appropriate for readers who want something new that acknowledges older console RPG design. It is a weaker choice if you require a confirmed time-travel story, a specific Square Enix connection or a documented physical release on your preferred system.

5. SaGa: a broader discovery route

Square Enix’s catalog includes games in the SaGa series, so SaGa is a legitimate direction for further exploration after Chrono Trigger. However, a series catalog alone does not prove that one particular SaGa game is especially similar to Chrono Trigger. The series spans different structures and identities, and selecting a single title would require checking that title’s current description, platforms and regional availability.

Use SaGa when you are ready to explore beyond the closest matches rather than when you need a guaranteed substitute. Start by identifying whether you want traditional commands, unusual character progression, a compact adventure or a more experimental structure, then evaluate an individual game on those terms.

How to choose in five minutes

  1. Name the feature you are replacing. Write down one priority: time-spanning story, classic Square Enix identity, traditional party adventure, multiple protagonists, tactical commands or retro-inspired presentation.
  2. Match the priority to the shortlist. Pick Live A Live for classic lineage and HD-2D; Dragon Quest XI S for a modern traditional RPG; OCTOPATH TRAVELER II for eight travelers and Break/Boost battles; or Sea of Stars for a secondary-source-supported retro-inspired option.
  3. Decide how much narrative similarity you need. None of these choices is established as a direct recreation of Chrono Trigger’s past-to-future journey. If the time-travel structure is non-negotiable, treat every recommendation as an adjacent experiment rather than a replacement.
  4. Check your hardware and edition. Use the platform lists above as a starting point, then open your local store page. Platform support, language options, physical packaging and stock can vary by region and edition.
  5. Choose digital or physical deliberately. OCTOPATH TRAVELER II has an officially listed package version, while the supplied evidence does not establish equivalent physical availability for every other recommendation in every market. A package listing is not the same as guaranteed local stock.

What to verify before buying

  • Region: Confirm that the store page is for your country. Release dates and package contents can differ.
  • Edition: A base game, an “S” edition and a platform-specific upgrade may not be the same product.
  • Platform generation: Dragon Quest XI S is listed for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, while OCTOPATH TRAVELER II is listed for both as well. Check which version you are purchasing.
  • Physical stock: An official package listing does not guarantee that a retailer currently has inventory.
  • Expectations: Do not infer review scores, play length, performance or story connections from a platform listing or a visual comparison alone.

The best answer depends on what you loved

For the closest overall feeling of a classic Square Enix game refreshed for modern screens, choose Live A Live. For a substantial and traditional RPG available across major console and PC storefronts, choose Dragon Quest XI S. For the richest match to a party-focused player who wants more deliberate command battles, choose OCTOPATH TRAVELER II. For a modern game selected primarily because secondary coverage connects it with retro-inspired RPG design, consider Sea of Stars. Keep SaGa as a broader catalog to investigate once you are comfortable with a less direct match.
