For everyday Android navigation and apps that accept a pointer, a Bluetooth mouse is usually the more straightforward choice. A gamepad can act as a mouse only if that specific controller has a documented mouse mode, and the app must still respond to its input. Android’s support for game controllers does not mean every controller moves the system pointer.
If you mean controlling a particular game rather than navigating Android, the better option depends on whether that game supports mouse input or gamepad controls. There is no head-to-head evidence establishing that either option is faster, more accurate, or lower-latency.
How the two options differ
A Bluetooth mouse is a pointer device: Android and the app can receive pointer movement, clicks, and, where supported, scrolling. Android’s large-screen guidance identifies hover, right-click, and mouse-wheel or trackpad scrolling as mouse interactions. See Android’s input compatibility guidance for large screens.
A gamepad is designed primarily to send game controls such as button presses and joystick movement. Android documents game-controller mappings and features, but that support does not make a standard controller a system mouse. A mouse mode, when available, is a separate capability that depends on the controller model and its instructions. See Android’s game-controller documentation.

Which works better for your task?

Why app support matters
Recognizing an input device and using its input as intended are different things. Android describes mouse events and pointer capture for games, but the game must implement appropriate behavior. Android’s mouse input guidance explains, for example, that Google Play Games on PC can translate a left-click into a virtual tap by default. Native mouse behaviors such as hover states and right-click require suitable game support in that environment. This PC-specific example illustrates the broader compatibility issue; it is not a universal Android setting for changing how every app handles input.
Similarly, Android’s controller APIs help games receive gamepad input; they do not guarantee that a controller’s stick will move an Android pointer. A Bluetooth VR Gamepad manual documents switching a particular model’s joystick into mouse mode on Android. That establishes that model-specific modes exist, not that a typical controller has one or that the mode works in every app.

Connect a controller and check its settings
Google’s Android Help describes wired and wireless controller setup. For a wireless controller, put it into pairing mode, then use the device’s Bluetooth pairing screen. Menu names and available controller settings can vary by Android device.

- For a wireless controller, put the controller into pairing mode.
- On Android, open Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device, then select the controller when it appears.
- If needed, review the available button or joystick assignment settings on the device. Google’s controller setup help describes these settings on supported screens.
- To use the controller as a mouse, follow the exact model’s documented instructions to switch modes, then test it in the intended app.
Choose based on compatibility, not assumed performance
For routine cursor navigation or a mouse-oriented interface, start with a Bluetooth mouse. If you already own a controller, consider using it as a mouse only when its manual documents the mode and the target app responds as needed. For a game, first check whether it supports mouse input, gamepad input, or both; a controller’s Android compatibility alone does not answer that question.

The official input and support materials cited here explain device capabilities and app-side input behavior, but do not provide a controlled comparison of gamepad mouse mode and Bluetooth mouse performance. They establish no general winner for speed, precision, comfort, or latency.
