To handle a growing price history, keep database reads on the server where appropriate, ask PostgreSQL for only the observations a page needs, and evaluate partitioning against real query and write patterns. Partitioning is an option—not a fix to apply just because a table is expected to grow. The title alone does not establish a row-count forecast, index strategy, partition key, or latency target.

Keep database reads on the server and protect every data path

With the Next.js App Router, a Server Component can query an ORM or database directly. Next.js documentation explains that credentials and query logic used by Server Components are not included in the client bundle. That keeps database access out of browser code; it does not by itself authenticate a user or authorize access to a particular record.

Use a Route Handler or API boundary when the product needs a client-side request or a separately consumed endpoint. Whichever path handles a read, apply the authentication and authorization rules that fit the data and user. Do not treat server rendering as a substitute for those checks.

Ask PostgreSQL for the slice the page needs

A price chart or list often shows a selected game, storefront, region, and time range—not every observation ever collected. Filter for the needed records, order them in SQL, and limit the result to the amount the interface can use. This avoids transferring a broad history merely to sort and discard most of it in JavaScript.

Next.js’s App Router learning tutorial demonstrates querying only the latest five rows and explains that fetching all rows and sorting them in application memory increases data transfer and JavaScript work as an app grows. That example illustrates the bounded-query pattern; it is not a prescribed price-tracker schema or a row limit for every chart.

Approach Rows and transfer Where ordering and selection happen
Bounded SQL query Returns the selected records needed for the view PostgreSQL filters and orders the result
Load a broad history, then process it in application memory Transfers records the view may not need The application sorts and selects after retrieval

Illustrative query shape

The example below assumes a table with game, storefront, region, observation-time, and price fields. Those names are illustrative, not a schema recommendation. Adapt the filters and ordering to the actual product requirements:

The time bounds are half-open: the start is included and the end is excluded. That convention can make adjacent chart windows easier to define without overlapping their boundary observation. Add a result limit or a product-defined sampling step if the view requires one; the appropriate choice depends on its resolution and query needs.

Choose chart data deliberately

Before designing storage or query paths around a chart, decide whether it needs raw observations, selected samples, or pre-aggregated points. These choices trade detail and storage against the amount of work required to serve a view. The documentation cited here does not prescribe one approach for a game-price tracker.

Chart input What it preserves or changes What to decide
Raw observations Retains the recorded points selected by the query Whether the chart needs that level of detail for its requested range
Selected samples Shows a chosen subset of observations Which sampling rule preserves the changes users need to see
Pre-aggregated series Serves derived points instead of computing every view from raw rows Which aggregates and time intervals the product requires, and how derived data stays current

Sampling, rollup tables, caching, and retention limits are design options to validate against workload and product requirements—not requirements established by the framework or database documentation.

Evaluate PostgreSQL partitioning against the workload

PostgreSQL declarative partitioning divides one logical table into smaller physical partitions. PostgreSQL 18’s table-partitioning documentation describes situations where it can improve performance, including when activity is concentrated in one or a small number of partitions. It does not promise an improvement for every table or query.

A time-based partition key is one possibility for timestamped observations if the important queries constrain time. That is a hypothesis to test with representative queries, not a universal recommendation. Partitioning adds planning and maintenance work, so compare it with keeping the history in an unpartitioned table:

Design Query behavior to consider Write and operations work
Unpartitioned history Queries use their filters and indexes; there is no partition pruning No time-bound partition creation is required
Partitioned history Queries whose predicates align with partition bounds can let PostgreSQL skip irrelevant partitions Inserts must match an existing partition; partitions need to be created and monitored

Make pruning possible

Partition pruning works when the query predicates let PostgreSQL determine that some partition bounds cannot match. If the application’s common reads constrain a time range, check whether those predicates align with the chosen partition key and bounds. A partition design provides little value to a query that must examine partitions because it lacks a useful pruning predicate. PostgreSQL’s documentation also notes that the relevant pruning setting must not be disabled.

Plan for inserts and partition boundaries

An insert that does not match an existing partition errors. If partitions are time-based, automate their creation ahead of the next boundary and monitor that process; PostgreSQL documentation describes a script for recurring time partitions as a practical option. Do not choose a monthly, yearly, or other interval without evidence about write volume, retention, and query patterns.

Gather workload facts before fixing a schema or capacity target

A useful design depends on details the title does not provide. Establish these inputs before promising a schema, partition interval, index set, storage estimate, or response time:

  • Catalog and source scope: which games and storefronts are covered, what collection permissions and data terms apply, and how region and currency are represented.
  • Ingestion: polling cadence, expected observation volume, concurrent writers, and how corrections or duplicate observations are handled.
  • History and presentation: retention period, chart ranges and resolution, whether users need alerts, and whether views need raw or derived points.
  • Service expectations: uptime and latency targets, plus the read patterns the application must support.

These inputs affect constraints, ingestion design, indexes, partitioning, and caching. The official documentation establishes behaviors and trade-offs, but it does not establish how many observations a particular tracker can support or the latency it will achieve. Treat any capacity or performance target as unproven until evaluated on the intended workload.
