On Nintendo Switch 2, both are physical cards, but they hold different things. A standard game card can start its game after you insert it. A Game-Key Card is a key for downloading the full game; you need to download the game and keep the card inserted to play. Check the packaging for a particular release, because not every physical Switch 2 game uses the Game-Key Card format.
What’s the difference between a Game-Key Card and a standard game card?
Nintendo uses the term “game card” for the physical media. A Game-Key Card is also a physical card, but it does not contain the full game data. Instead, it lets the console download that data. Nintendo describes a standard game card as playable after insertion.

Nintendo’s support page distinguishes standard game cards from Game-Key Cards. The packaging identifies Game-Key Card releases, so check the front of the box rather than assuming that a boxed game contains its full data on the card. | Question | Standard game card | Game-Key Card |
|---|---|---|
| What does the card contain? | Nintendo says the game can be started after you insert the card. | A key used to download the full game data. |
| What must happen before play? | Insert the card and start the game. | Download the game; internet access is needed for the first launch. |
| Is internet needed for later play? | Nintendo’s cited instructions do not specify every title’s online features. | Nintendo says the downloaded game can be started offline afterward. |
| Is storage needed for a download? | No download requirement is stated in Nintendo’s cited guidance. | Yes. Use available system memory or a microSD Express card; check the packaging for the required free space. |
| Does the card need to remain inserted? | Follow the game’s instructions for its physical media. | Yes. The Game-Key Card must be inserted to start the downloaded game. |
How does a Game-Key Card work?
- Check the game’s packaging to confirm it is a Game-Key Card and see how much free space the download requires.
- Insert the card into the Switch 2 and connect the console to the internet to download the game. Choose system memory or a microSD Express card with enough available space.
- For the first launch, connect to the internet. Nintendo says that after the game has downloaded, you can start it offline.
- Keep the Game-Key Card inserted when you start the downloaded game.
Nintendo’s explanation of Game-Key Cards is available on its Switch 2 Game-Key Cards information page.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Do you need a microSD Express card?
Not automatically. Nintendo says a Game-Key Card download can use either system memory or a microSD Express card. Extra storage is useful only if the console does not have enough free space for the game. Check the box for the required space before deciding whether you need another storage card.
Can you play offline or use the card on another Switch 2?
Playing offline after downloading
Nintendo says internet access is required when launching a Game-Key Card game for the first time. Once downloaded, the game can be started without an internet connection. This describes starting the game; it does not mean that online features within a particular title will work offline.

Using the card on another console
Nintendo says to insert the Game-Key Card into another Switch 2 and follow that console’s download steps. That guidance explains how to use the card on another console; it does not establish broader rules about resale, lending, or long-term access.

Why did Nintendo introduce Game-Key Cards?
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa described the format as a response to larger game data sizes on Switch 2 compared with the original Switch. In Nintendo’s English translation of its 2025 annual-meeting Q&A, he said: “This is one of the new software distribution methods we have introduced to accommodate the larger game data sizes on Nintendo Switch 2 compared to Nintendo Switch.” Nintendo’s 85th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders: Q&A Summary.

- Considering a Game-Key Card? Make sure you can download the game and have enough free storage; remember that the card remains necessary to start it.
- Unsure what a boxed release includes? Read the packaging. Switch 2 has both standard game cards and Game-Key Cards.
