The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is the better-equipped Fold8, but its large price premium is easiest to justify if you want a bigger inner screen and a dedicated 3x telephoto camera. Samsung lists an 8-inch main display, a 6.5-inch cover display, a 200 MP main camera and a 5,000 mAh battery. It is also a 215 g device with no S Pen support, and its launch-era starting price was $2,099 in the US.
What is the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra?
Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra on August 6, 2026, describing it as the first Ultra model in its foldable lineup. Sales began in select markets on August 7, with a wider rollout planned; availability and configurations can vary by country. Samsung’s launch announcement positions it as the slimmest Z Fold design to date, measuring 4.1 mm unfolded and weighing 215 g. Those are Samsung’s product specifications, not independent measurements.
Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra vs Galaxy Z Fold8
The Ultra’s extra cost buys more screen area and a more versatile rear camera system. The regular Fold8 is the more economical option if its smaller screens suit you and you do not need a dedicated telephoto lens.

What the Ultra’s displays and cameras add
A larger screen inside and out
The 8-inch inner display gives more room for reading, video and working with multiple apps than the Fold8’s 7.6-inch screen. The 6.5-inch cover display is also larger than the standard model’s 5.5-inch panel, which may make closed-phone tasks more comfortable. The trade-off is that you are choosing a large foldable rather than a compact handset; consider how often you will use the unfolded screen against the added bulk and cost.
A dedicated 3x telephoto camera
The Ultra adds a 10 MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom to its 200 MP wide and 50 MP ultrawide cameras. That gives it a dedicated option for distant subjects that the standard Fold8 lacks. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer praised the Ultra’s camera system overall but judged its telephoto performance weaker than expected. That is a subjective review assessment, not a specification or a guarantee about every shooting situation.

Battery, charging and performance
Samsung specifies a 5,000 mAh battery and 45 W wired charging. Tom’s Guide tested the Ultra by browsing the web over 5G with the display set to 150 nits; it recorded 14 hours and 33 minutes of battery life. In the same outlet’s review, the standard Fold8 lasted 12 hours and 19 minutes under its test. These controlled results favor the Ultra in that particular test, but they cannot predict how long either phone will last for an individual user.

It also lists IP48 and 20 W wireless charging. Treat these as the reviewer’s detailed specifications; Samsung’s cited launch announcement separately confirms the battery capacity and 45 W charging figure.

Tom’s Guide measured a peak brightness of 2,687 nits in its test setup, below Samsung’s stated maximum rating of 3,000 nits. The reviewer praised outdoor visibility and reduced reflections. The measured figure is specific to that review’s method and should not be read as a universal result for every unit or condition.
Price and value
Tom’s Guide listed these launch/review-era prices for the 256 GB / 12 GB configuration: $2,099 in the US, £1,899 in the UK and AU$2,999 in Australia. Its review listed $2,299 for 512 GB and $2,699 for 1 TB / 16 GB. These are not live quotes; local prices and stock may have changed since publication. Tom’s Guide’s Ultra review is the source for those figures.

At this level, the meaningful question is whether you will use what distinguishes the Ultra: its larger displays and additional optical telephoto camera. What Hi-Fi? also framed the device as pricier than the standard Fold8, the preceding Fold7 and Samsung’s non-folding S26 Ultra. If you do not specifically want a foldable, compare the Ultra’s price and weight with a conventional phone that better fits your priorities. What Hi-Fi?’s review provides that price context.
Drawbacks and practical buying checks
- No S Pen: Tom’s Guide reports that the Ultra does not support Samsung’s S Pen, so it is not the choice for buyers who want pen input on the inner screen.
- Magnetic wireless charging needs a case: Tom’s Guide says Qi2 is supported, but magnetic wireless charging requires a case.
- Check accessory fit by exact model: The reviewer found that a Fold7 case did not fit the Ultra. Buy a case or screen protector only when the listing explicitly identifies the Fold8 Ultra and, for screen protection, the specific inner or cover display.
- Consider weight and handling: Samsung specifies 215 g. The extra display area may be useful, but it does not make the phone a light or small option.
Is the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra worth it?
The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is the right fit for buyers who will regularly use its 8-inch inner display, larger cover screen and dedicated 3x optical telephoto camera, and who accept the price and 215 g weight. Tom’s Guide’s battery test is encouraging compared with its standard Fold8 result, but it remains one outlet’s test rather than an everyday guarantee. Choose the standard Fold8 if its smaller displays meet your needs and you would rather avoid paying for the Ultra’s camera and screen upgrades. Skip the foldable category if the larger screen is not worth the premium and handling trade-offs to you.
